Diction jokes are fun. A favorite that we will randomly break into occasionally is "Here I amUH... Rock you like a hurricaneUH"

I thought everyone did that...?

Haha, don't worry. We still 'make fun' of dowling that year. Yesterday at Hinton we were talking about it. We'll randomly break out in, 'Is there anyone ouTTT there Kause it's geTTing harDer anD harDer to Breathe--AA! but thats how you get best vocals.

Loud diction is not always the best diction. It's not just how much you get the consonants out there, but what they'll sound like. For example, instead of doing "BreathUH" Dowling should have tried "Breathih". It sounds much more natural when you say it. The "Uhs" are my biggest pet peeve when it comes to diction

lol Pete taught me that one.

We used to sing "mellow saxophoNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNUUUUUUUUUHHHHHH"

it was a little ridiculous so we changed it to saxophon(ih) and it just sounded so much more natural, and less stupid

As a show choir, you wanna leave the stage giving the audience something to remember.

Obviously Dowling did that. They earned a couple GC's that year in addition to other top finishes.

Was it just spectacular diction or overdone? Everyone is gonna have their own opinion. One judge will give them a 10/10 and another would give them 6/10.

I thought it was fantastic, but yes, overdone. Obviously because it is now an inside joke in our show choir.

Along with 'There's a light at the end of the tunneLUH'... haha, yes ClaCo. We use that song as a joke The lights under the risers just made it so we couldnt resist.. lol :D i reall did like your show that year, though.

well i wasnt in that show that year, but i never noticed that, maybe because i saw it sooo much! if it wasnt for that show i don't think i'd be in show choir. our jv show wasnt good. it was too cheesy and smily and just sucked haha so if it wasnt for CLACO i think i woulda quit

but i think its the fact that they focused on what works better more than sound. that was the only song that had the crazy diction that sounded like "Is theAH AnyWUn ouTEH theAH, cuz it'S GettIN hArDA and hArDA to breath-UH!" no exaggeration! i think it worked really well for them. sure to an audience it was ridiculous but as a judge i would prolly give extra

That's not how you get best vocals. There is a HUGE difference between classical diction and pop diction, and show choirs who don't confuse the two tend to do much better on the circuit. Listen to Clinton, Burroughs, Waubonsie Valley, Totino Grace, Carmel, Burbank, they all win best vocals all over the place, and use pop diction when necessary. Classical diction is sometimes necessary, but in pop music there are several new rules you have to adjust for. I would guess Dowling probably just sang better .

very good point. but lord have mercy you shoulda herd the diction.... it was really outstanding?

Our show is not on youtube. And i dont know if it ever will get on youtube. Our past years are because i took my dvd's and put them on. But since I'm not in the group anymore, i didn't get a DVD. Sooo

Dowling is pretty infamous for their diction. If you'd remember, we (LeMars) finished right behind you (SF Washington) at Emmetsburg that year. They had amazing vocals and the best diction i had heard from almost anyone.

we competed against dowling 2 years ago.... they had amazing vocals the best diction i've ever heard!
they've stepped it up some and not only that but we thought this would be our chance to take grand champs.... ahhh, anyway a congrats to all especially dowling.
i'll definatelly see you at best of show!

I definitely think that Classic Connection should have won grand champs if not the best choreography. Before I came to this competition, I had never heard of Dowling, but honestly I don't see what was so great about their show. Yes, they did have the best vocals there and since vocals are worth more than choreography, that is probably why they won.
