I can't do anything about the former Urbandale kids and their opinions except ask them to remember how much we stress sportsmanship and friendliness....right, Tyler. If there were current Urbandale members who said or did anything at the competition that was perceived as unfriendly or talking negatively about Hastings or any other choir, I want to know about it so we can take care to make sure it never happens again in the future.

I want to say that the Riverside kids were all really nice and performed their hearts out. I met a few of them in the cafeteria when I asked about the (somewhat creepy) doll your group was carrying around at the competition. I don't think I got the real story on it, but it just shows what a fun and carefree group they are.

I was in the warmup room packing up some of our equipment while they were preparing for their finals performance and knew they were going to give a performance that was definitely going to challenge us for the grand championship. The only comments I personally heard from my current show choir members was about how good Hastings was.

We really enjoyed our critique with Stephen Todd and have tons of respect for him and the talent he possesses. And he's hilarious too.

Congrats to all the groups that competed at Johnston yesterday and good luck with the rest of your season.

yeah Jeff.. thats why i said "sorry for the rudeness.." i wasnt speaking badly about any group... i was stating my opinion which it seems that what everyone else has been doing... coming from and audience member i was saying that i was surprised to see that Hastings won... I apologize to any Hastings member who took offense to my comment but thats my opinion and i find nothing wrong with posting it on here...

As a judge's assistant, I was able to see every show on Saturday (except for Urby's day show; we were in warm-up), and the results seemed spot-on. I've only seen Studio 2010 once compared to the three times I've seen VA, but I was left with more memorable moments from VA. I thought they might get 2nd.

Also, the Lady Gaga closer from Valley was pretty awesome, Hastings' ballad was my favorite of the day, and Norris was a joy to watch both times. It was a great finals line-up!

I really enjoyed the competition; everyone did a really great job.

I must say Hastings was my favorite; I thought their show was really entertaining, and they had great energy.

I thought Ankeny did a great job; their choreography was really clean, and executed well. I thought everyone seemed to really get into the show, and really worked the crowd. Whoever the red-headed guy is; he definitely caught the eye of many!

Urbandale did really good; but they always do good. As a Johnston alum, I have been watching Urby for a long time now, and I must say, something about the show this year just didn't feel like typical Urbandale... I can't quite put my finger on it. The vocals were really good, but didn't seem as in my face as past years. I just wasn't blown away as I have been... I'm sure you guys will only improve as the season goes on.

Great competition, and best of luck to everyone for the rest of the 2010 season!!

Wow, Hastings! You guys are dominating all over the place. Great job.
Anybody have the following information:
Prep placements
Choreographers for Norris, Indianola, Ogden, Ankeny (all 3 groups)
Judges
Directors for Valley prep, Ankeny PM + Int
Middle school/9th grade results

Norris is choreographed by Eric Shepard
Ankeny Intensity was choreographed by Lexi Robson directed by Jim Cacciatore, PM choreographed by Anne Chapman, directed by Jim Cacciatore and Lester Miller, and VA choreographed by April James.

9th prep 2nd- Johnston Sound Advice; 1st- Ankeny Internal Combustion

that's all I know!

I just want to say how grateful i am to this competition. i think that Riverside came together the most here, and really became the close group we wanted to be. we knew how tough it was going to be, and we went into it without any expectations. so thank you to everyone who understands that and supports that. i'm so happy i'm a part of this for my senior year. and i kinda see kendra as a good luck charm (even though she is the creepiest thing ever). oh, and our show is on youtube too, now. its our preview show, but its the whole show.

if i understood our director correctly, Stephen didn't judge in finals because of Hastings competing. he's our choreographer.

haha, as for the doll.. her name is Kendra.. there are mixed feelings about her in our group.. she is just mostly supposed to be our mascot because in the past we've always had members that had much younger siblings that came with to EVERY competition (: but now this year we are lacking the younger sibling so i feel like Kendra is supposed to "replace" that.. but like i said, there are mixed feelings about her.

You should see the creepy doll that sits up in their cafeteria area.

Sorry, I just wanted to clear that up.
I didn't want to insinuate in any way that either Hastings or Stephen would conduct themselves in such a manner (although looking back I probably did...)
Is there a video of you guys up anywhere? The way you're dominating across the Midwest, I definitely need to see this show lol.

www.hastingsshowchoirs.org is the link I know you can find a preview show, but I am much more excited to watch a full show online (or in person... but i don't think that will happen )

hopefully as a critiquer because he choreographs Hastings...
obviously. hastings strives for excellence and fairness. we would not have competed if it would have been unfair like that. same with stephen. he would never have actually judged in that situation. that's just so......wrong and awkward.
so yes he just critiqued daytime and merely watched finals. just like last year and probably future years if hastings continues to go to johnston.

i just want to say that Hastings appreciates johnston's amazing competition and the other AMAZING choirs. it was such a face off. i really wouldn't have cared who won after we came off that stage for finals. giving your entire soul and body to a performance with around 60 of your greatest friends in the world is something people should just never forget. and that is what we did. sure it's nice to win, but we like to focus more on that. i was so sorry to hear that some urbandale kids were talking so badly about us. there's really nothing we can do about it, we just focused on what we focus on and gave 23809% of our hearts out there and i guess the judges saw that.

we are truly honored to be placed in the same league as choirs like urbandale and ankeny. they are so amazing.

Stephen Todd and Linda McEachran were both of the critique judges during the day, and then Linda was added as a scoring judge at night.

As far as the Ankeny placement goes, I can't talk about from the judging panal, but from hearing people talk about their show afterward I kept hearing people talk about how their show was "angry". One lady said something about how she would rather watch a choir perform moves where the performers could do just that perform and put their own style into the choreography instead of being completely unison and dead on with the rest of the choir. It made a lot of sense, and I guess that is what a lot of people might feel about Ankeny this year...?

That aside, thanks for everyone that attended, and I hope you had a fun time!

im confused...so they were...too clean? lol never knew that was possible. Were they maybe trying too hard to be clean, and lost all stylistic motion to the moves? So they looked like a bunch of robots or somethig up there? Because i know that has been a problem with xhilaration in the past. we've tended to focused so much on cleanliness that we find ourselves losing what was cool about the move in the first place. Which is not to say cleanliness shouldnt be stressed...i guess you just have to walk a fine line.
