Does anyone else find it weird that Jackson Academy beat Jackson Prep? Not saying that it couldn't have been done, but that's odd. I bet it was an interesting night!
That's exactly what I was thinking!

I would like to say thank you to the Madison Central people for putting on this competition. I enjoyed it and thought it was very well run both backstage (as a member of the junior high set crew) and everywhere else (as a member of Encore). All the hosts were helpful and awesome people in general. Thanks!

Mr. Lyall,
Let me commend your efforts! Let me also congratulate you guys on what I hear was an excellent year! Unfortunately I did not get to see your show choir live this year but I hear it was PHENOMENAL! Keep it up, sir!

We originally wanted a different date. I would have preferred a date that would have allowed for a concert choir division as well to allow for schools to be professionally adjudicated before our district choral festivals; however, there are several long standing events hosted by our school as well as a long standing date for an honor choir that we traditionally send several students to that forced our hand with the date. I firmly believe that there are enough groups in the south to allow for two quality competitions on the same day. Show choir in the south is still growing at a rapid pace and shows no signs of slowing down.

Regardless of next year's date, I would hope that choirs would consider what we have to offer. We have a state of the art, 1000 seat auditorium. We allow additional time for set up and break down of equipment. We have a large storage area directly backstage with a rollup door that leads directly to the center of the stage. We allow for the use of fog machines, customizable lighting, and a killer sound system run by hired, professional technicians, and we still had hot food available in the concessions stand all the way to the end of finals. Our aim is to create an atmosphere that is free of chaos while allowing the performers to put on the best possible show, because in the end, that is what it's all about.

A date for the 2014 Deep South Classic will be coming soon, and we would love to have y'all join us!

Sincerely,

Max Lyall

I agree! If competitions in the South happened on all different weekends, there would be a lot more participation at some of them. I think if a school wants to start a competition, they should pick a date that is open. I hate it when more than one competition is scheduled on the same day!
The last Saturday of February is also always the busiest show choir weekend of the year (in other words, the absolute worst time to schedule it). They could use the SCC calendar to see when events are traditionally held and find a good time around that... there are far fewer competitions in the South than in other parts of the country, so there should be some decent options available. Glad to know about this one, though.

It's great to have another Mississippi competition and I hope your first one was great. However, I think it would be even better if competitions weren't doubled up, particularly within the same state and same division. Does Madison Central plan on having their competition on the last weekend in February every year? That would prevent Petal from attending as that has been the date of the Petal Invitational for I know over 10 years. Just a thought.

These are just the ramblings of a parent and do not represent the ideas or opinions of the associated show choir or directors.

Results are posted above. Only 5 schools total attended apparently due to a lot of schools dropping out because of the state basketball tournament. I sorta feel bad for Clinton Christian Academy for being the only advanced group to not make finals, but hey I guess the Spirit Award makes up for that, right?

Here was the performance schedule:
Deep South Classic - 02/23/2013
12:30 Doors Open
1:30 Jackson Academy MS "Showtime"
2:10 Clinton Christian Academy "Extreme"
2:50 Pell City HS "Showstoppers"
3:30 Spain Park HS "Rhapsody in Blue"
4:25 Jackson Academy "Encore"
5:15 Jackson Prep "Reveillon"
5:50 Madison Central HS "Reveille" (Exhibition)
6:30 Prelim Awards
7:45 Finalist #1
8:25 Finalist #2
9:05 Finalist #3
9:45 Finalist #4
10:45 Final Awards

Feel free to continue discussion...
