To qualify for ISSMA you attend and place in Finals at an ISSMA Qualifier. Ben Davis, Pike, North Central, and Carroll are qualifiers (I may be forgetting one or 2). All the contests use the same ISSMA score sheet.
Center Grove has never attended an ISSMA state contest even though they've qualified every year.
Last year's results
issma Class A Mixed State Finals:
1) North Central "Counterpoints" Visuals
2) Ben Davis "Premiers" Vocals
3) Carroll "Minstrel Magic"
4) Franklin Central "F.C. Singers"
5) Huntington North "Varsity Singers"
6) Northrop "Charisma"
7) Castle "Knight Sensations"<
You can qualify at Northridge, which is what is going on today (: Huntington North used to be an ISSMA qualifier but we aren't able to Host this year and we couldn't last year either
To clarify. Issma qualifiers are still going on so nothing is a set list yet. They determine usually a week before. The state week. And its march 19. Lol were still in February.
No Adam, probably not. It sounds like most of the groups I enjoy seeing will be elsewhere, especially if HN isn't participating. That pretty much just leaves North Central and BD.
And Jay,
FC won the first qualifier, and was the highest scoring choir from indiana at the second, where they got 1ru to Waubonsie Valley.
So I guess it's just a guess that right now they have the highest qualifying score, but unless I missed something, I think it's valid.
Sad that no one is going, but FC's competition this week is going to be a better lineup than state has been the past couple of years, So i'll just be going to that one.
Northrop still hopes to qualify. And nobody should know who has qualified yet. ISSMA won't let anyone know until they do the draw.
If your choir's been to all or most of the qualifiers, you can have a pretty good idea based on scoresheets...but it all depends on who plans on actually submitting their scores.
And large is at North Central this year? Didn't realize that.
I love the concept of ISSMA State, but in reality it really doesn't work out...so many competitive choirs choose not to attend, and the results often don't make sense for the choirs that are there.
I heard that Huntington North won't attend this year as well if they qualify at Carroll. But that was when they rescheduled their competition to the same date. Now, I would assume they are still not attending but I can't be entirely sure.
How do we know Franklin Central has the highest score? Is there a site that says it?
Carroll will be a REALLY tough competition, and probably after that weekend we will be so unsure of who has qualified or not lol.
ISSMA qualifies for the state finals with qualifier competitions. Any competition can apply to become a qualifier, and the ones that are accepted use ISSMA's score sheets and most of the ISSMA rules regarding time limits and the like. The scores that you get at qualifers are submitted to ISSMA, and the top nine scoring groups in both mixed and women's in small and large schools go to the state finals. There are total of four separate competitions at two sites(Large school women and mixed are at Lawrence Central HS, Small school women and mixed are at Plainfield HS.) You can go to multiple qualifiers and you submit your highest qualifier score(for example, my choir got its highest score at Fisher's qualifying competition, so we'll submit that score for consideration).
The thing is that small school competition will probably be full, whereas there were only five large school women's groups and seven large school mixed groups that even applied to go to large school State last year...and I know that Carroll, who brought both their groups to large State last year, is skipping to go to New York.
ISSMA state usually ends up with wildly unpredictable results, which is part of the reason that some schools choose not to participate. The ranking of qualifying scores means absolutely nothing the day of the state competition. Our girls group last year was highly ranked with its qualifying score for small women's groups, and ended up dead last on the day of the competition.
Edit: You also do NOT have to get into finals at a state qualifier to have your score qualify for the state finals.

2) What do you mean Center Grove won't attend?

In order to qualify for the Indiana State School Music Association Show Choir Finals, you must have competed at a designated local contest that uses the ISSMA score sheet for adjudication. There's a Large School and Small School contest which is then broken down into Mixed Groups and Women's groups. The top 9 scores in each division make State finals. Generally groups who wish to qualify for the contest enter with their best score, achieved at a a qualifier. More schools are choosing not to compete now citing issues with the contest like the score sheet, questionable adjudication in past years, rigid contest rules, venues, and overall logistics of the contest. Center Grove has never attended the contest. Same goes for groups like Zionsville and Lafayette Jefferson. Carmel, Lawrence Central, and Warren Central dropped their attendance in 2010.
I do know that all of the above mentioned groups plus Franklin Central and Carroll are not going to the contest this year. Expect for this year's competition to be North Central vs. Ben Davis. I can't remember them fully but last year's results are
GC: North Central "Counterpoints"-Best Visual
1RU-Ben Davis "Premiers"-Best Vocals
2RU-Carroll "Minstrel Magic"
3RU-Franklin Central "FC Singers"
This year's contest is March 19 at North Central High School
