Soprano, Désirée Duwe (Wattelet), has been recognized as a promising young soprano whose impressive voice is presenting a unique mark upon several operatic and concert stages. She has performed with opera companies and symphony orchestras throughout the United States. Recent appearances include the following operatic roles: The Queen of the Night - Die Zauberflöt with the Asheville Lyric Opera, Virtue -L’incoronazione di Poppea; Mary - The Ballad of Baby Doe and the youth performance of Donna Elvira - Don Giovanni at the Central City Opera House Association; Aksinya/Woman Convict - Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and 5th Maid - Elektra at the Austin Lyric Opera and the Witch in Sondheim’s Into the Woods at the North Central Wisconsin Conservatory of the Arts. Her recent concert performances have included operatic and jazz concerts at The Wausau Conservatory of Music, Nicolet Area Technical College, the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point and the Divano Lounge at The Minocqua Brewery. Her operatic experience includes performances in the roles of Donna Anna/Donna Elvira, Virtue, Drusilla, Tatiana, Lauretta, Lucy, Nanetta, Amelia, Violetta, Countess, Despina, Fiordiligi, Belinda, Queen of the Night, 1rst Lady, Pamina, Konstanze, Musetta, Juliette, Marguerite, Adina, and Susannah.
As a recitalist and chamber musician, her concert credits include Guest Artist appearances for Nicolet College, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, the Wausau Lyric Choir & Festival Orchestra, the University of Texas at Austin the Wednesday Morning Music Club, the Austin Lyric Opera Guild, the Austin Women’s Society, the University of Texas Performing Arts Center, the Divano Lounge at the Minocqua Brewery, the Aurora.Borealis Festival, Musical Bridges Across the World, the Austin Chamber Music Festival, the University of Texas Chamber Orchestra, Concert Chorale and Chorale Arts Society, the Armstrong Community Music School, the Orchestra of the Pines and Mu Phi Epsilon. She was a Regional Semi-finalist and District Winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions - Southwest Region, an Encouragement Award Winner at the Orpheus National Music Competition for Vocalists, Middle TN Choral Society and 3rd Place Winner in both the Fielder Grant for Vocal Career Advancement and the Laureen Butler Vocal Competition, El Paso Opera.
Désirée Duwe is a Wisconsin native and received a B.M. in Vocal Performance from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, where she received the Eunice De Baker and Susan B. Coleman Music Scholarships. She then moved directly into her master’s program at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX, where she studied vocal pedagogy with Dr. David Jones, the founder of the Vocal Pedagogy Department at Stephen F. Austin State University. Upon completion of her M.M. in Vocal Performance, the Music Department and Friends of the Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University awarded her their most prestigious prizes, the President’s Award and Vocal Recitalist of the Year. Désirée completed her Doctor of Musical Arts in Voice & Opera at the University of Texas at Austin and was given the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Student Awards Convocation.
Currently, Dr. Duwe is the 6-12 Vocal Music Director in the School District of Rhinelander and is also on the music faculty at Nicolet Area Technical College, where she has developed and taught college level music curriculum and programs responsive to the needs of the University Transfer Program, the Business & Community Education –Personal Enrichment Program, the Learning in Retirement Program, the Nicolet College Music Club and the Northwoods Academy. She is also a Master Level - Choral Clinician and Festival Judge for the Wisconsin State Music Association and is also member of the following professional music organizations: The National Association of Teachers of Singing and The National Association for Music Education and The College Music Society.
