Congrats FX! Amazing shows up and down the division — everyone all groups should be so proud!

I’m not quite sure how one takes first place without taking either of the captions, but IIRC this is the second time that Los Alamitos has done this at Oceanside. Also, congrats to Oceanside for having the most epic competition in SoCal!

An example of how it could happen is:

Los Al gets 2nd in Vocals and 2nd in Choreo and then 1st in show design
Burbank gets 1st in Vocals and 3rd in Choreo and 3rd in show design
John Burroughs gets 3rd in Vocals 1st in Choreo and 2nd in show design

If the scores in all of this are very close together then it could lead to a split where Los Al wins (I wouldn’t be surprised if this happened)

Oceanside is scored using the Condorcet scoring method ran by the Carmen Scoring software, not raw points. Condorcet is a comparison rank-based system, meaning that all of the judges' scores are converted to ranks. These ranks are then used to determine the number of "wins" a choir has against other choirs. A win is classified as having a majority of the judges (at least three) rank one group higher than the other.

Captions are determined by either raw score or by ranks within the particular caption with Musicianship determined by the three Music judges and Showmanship determined by the two Showmanship judges.

Hi, I'm from Losal! The score breakdown was extremely close, with Losal, Burbank, and Burroughs all tied by ranking. We had 12222, while Burroughs and Burbank each had 11333. Burbank won best music, followed by Losal and then Burroughs. Burroughs ranked best in show, then Losal, then Burbank. The rankings would have us all in 1st technically, which is seen in the ranking breakdown.

I would suggest you check the ranks again. Unless a judge had Burroughs and Burbank tied in one category, there should only be five third ranks, not six, as you suggested.

To me, the one that needs explaining is Los Al. I’m quite unclear how the show ties into Severance and also why it ended with beach balls and bubble machines?

I love Los Al's show design this year! Here is my interpretation of the show:

Overall, it is an analysis of the high-tech world we live in today, where our personal devices are constantly fighting for our attention and encouraging us to continue "scrolling up." The brief Severance moment is the introduction to this world of the internet, which is expanded on with Bo Burnham's "Welcome to the Internet," which is an amusing look into the wild world of the internet, where basically anything can be found.

Next, the walls (which appear to be panels) start to close in, showing how they are starting to become addicted and trapped by this technology. Once they become enveloped by the Internet, they begin to be overloaded with advertisements that start to take away their precious time and resources by being bombarded by things they "should" care about and buy. When Los Al moves into "Somebody that I Used to Know," they reflect on how much they have been changed by the internet that they are now a stranger compared to the person they were before being consumed by the Internet.

The turning point is the ballad, where they decide to break free from the chains of the Internet, depicted by them concealing their light-up wristbands at the very end. The next severance moment is the transition into the closer, which shows the main character venturing out of the Internet world into some real world, kind of like an Innie transforming back into an Outie in Severance. Then, the closer is supposed to be fun and represent how people should live their days without the Internet by doing fun activities and interacting with others. That's why they enter the audience and toss beachballs and blow bubbles: they are having fun without a care about what others may think and are now truly alive.

I have one question for people more familiar with the california and west coast circuit. I noticed on the live stream that a good number of groups had a director conducting them at some point. I've never seen this before and was wondering if this is common practice in the west coast or just an anomaly?

Directors conducting the ballad used to be the standard everywhere, with the director standing front and center. It remains out here most probably because for years an a cappela ballad was a requirement (though many competitions have dropped that in order to attract choirs out of state choirs). In defense of a conducted ballad, it allows that performance to be fresh and unique every time. It can actually be thrilling to be a singer and the conductor makes changes mid-song (phrasings, tempos, etc). It keeps you in the moment and hanging on for the ride. It can also be especially impressive to judges in finals who notice the difference.

  1. Los Alamitos
  2. Kennedy
  3. Burbank
  4. Marysville.
