Just for the records, Alan Alder actually ended up judging instead of Connie Mulligan.

As crazy as the captions look, this exact situation almost occurred at Marysville last year! Loveland took third with best choreo while beavercreek took first with best vocals, however, ETC took fourth place while also being second in vocals. If ETC had gotten enough points to push them up to best vocals, but not enough to actually push them up a placement, they would’ve also taken fourth and best vocals. Crazy to think about, but absolutely possible!

Can someone explain the scoring system? I am just curious to know how both groups with BC and BV ended at third and fourth?

I’m not 100% sure about the system, but here is how it is possible:

If a group gets 1st in choreography and 5th in vocals, and another school gets 1st vocally and 5th in choreography, then other groups can get 2nd and 3rd (and be very close score-wise) to 1st and that puts them ahead of the individual caption winners.
