Any chance the page could be converted into the virtual West Coast Show Choir Finale that Burroughs is hosting from June 10-13? Per their schedule here, they have around 40 choirs (hosts notwithstanding) that will go live on twitch.tv/showchoir. Looks like they don't have caption award voting but just one voting/donation platform for all choirs.
i know this isnt a place for politics, but measure i in burbank basically didn’t pass and that would mean schools would begin to lose some of their money (i think thats how the measure works, but search up measure i burbank just to be clear.) in order to not lose revenue they have to cut staff, meaning several elective teachers including choir. if decided, powerhouse may not exist in the upcoming years ????. however, i believe they might save some electives, so hopefully burbank schools can keep show choirs!
or they can start charging extra, but with 9.1 million dollars, 3 middle schools and 2 high schools that do show choir, i dont know how much extra money would be charged :/
I cannot speak for Burbank High. However, the information we have been given at Burroughs suggests that choir will not be eliminated. Powerhouse will still exist, as will Sound Sensations, Sound Waves, and Decibelles. The school district is not decided yet as to what will be cut, but as of right now, choir is not a proposed cut. The VMA program is technically a separate entity from the school and is largely self-funded from events like Pancake Serenade, BOB, and Showcase, as well as family contributions and revenue from other shows.
What is currently on the chopping block is our awesome tech crew classes.. There is currently a campaign to influence that decision. Our tech crew students are not only vital to our choir shows, and competitions, but also handle anything to do with the auditorium...drama productions, band, dance, and many many other events around school that involve a screen, a microphone or a light..
Last I heard it definitely had not been cancelled, but things are moving pretty quickly in the world right now. Some major cities have been put on near complete lockdowns, so it's reasonable to expect that not much of anything resembling a gathering is taking place in the near future (let alone a massive school function). That said, I also keep seeing things like "Disneyland will be closed until March 31st," as if everything is magically going to be normal again in two weeks. It's all really weird. As with any event, I will update the status if I receive concrete information about it - but I don't like to assume. The season is over for a lot of groups in the Midwest, but remember that Cali runs quite a bit later; this one is still over a month away, so we just have to be patient.
It's definitely not happening this weekend. I just haven't marked the entire event as "cancelled," as I was told not too long ago that they are still holding out as long as possible for any remote chance of a reschedule. That said, the further we go down this road it's seeming far less likely. At this point I would just assume basically everything remaining in the 2020 season is probably "off," sadly.
