I stopped over at Medina for a few afternoon performances before returning to SCC to handle finals and updating all the information on here. Anyways, I didn't see all that many choirs but here's some thoughts on the shows I did see:
Grove City TOC - my favorite thing about this show was how much fun the kids were having on stage. The male sound was really strong and I think the boys/girls/combined number was probably my favorite sequence of the show. It was a full on beach party. I’m not sure the projector/backdrop part of the set was very effective as the images were pretty washed out. This program is definitely heading in a super fun and strong direction! Y’all were great! The summer beach vibes are much appreciated in February.
North Royalton - y’all are one of the show choirs under the radar that I’ve enjoyed a lot the past couple years. I really appreciate the creativity of the director/choreographer. The visuals are refreshing. You can tell y’alls choreographer isn’t a mainstream show choir choreographer and I mean that in a good way. The dancing is intentional and stylistically so appropriate. I thought it was really effective. One thing I was wanting during the show was more contrasting dynamics, and then Renegade happened which achieved some of that. The ending to your show was dramatic and I loved it. I was disappointed to see y’all didn’t make finals as I definitely think you’re a finals-caliber choir. Nice job today.
Twinsburg GE - we already know I’m a GE stan. Good golly miss molly, y’all can DANCE this year. Y’all tear up that stage the choreo is so strong, confident, and clean. It really seems like this is one of the stronger visual years in recent years, but idk I wasn't expecting to see y'all come in at 5th. I will say I wasn’t a huge fan of the second number, but then that ballad was everything! The vocals were commanding. Morning Glow is just, I mean, c'mon. Perfection. The boys transition number is so much fun. Dang, that soloist is an absolute boss. Some folks may miss the theme that y’all are infamous for, but I’m perfectly content with a holographic, dazzling, good ole fashioned show choir show. Y’all entertain and that’s exactly what I’m here for as an audience member.
Solon MIM - your Quest themed show is a blast. Even with a heavily thematic show, y’all had consistently complex vocal moments throughout and that was perhaps more prominent than the story itself. Very impressive. The male soloist near the end of the opening number was fantastic. Of course, the set design and battle with the dragon provided a resounding overall effect. The only thing I wanted were more high energy dancing moments. I think there were times I was looking more at the leading characters/set than the ensemble choreo. I always love the shows y’all bring and this one was no different. Congrats on your GC!
Findlay FFE - I know I can always expect so much maturity, poise, and professionalism from FFE. I thought it was perhaps the most balanced show I saw. Stellar vocals, classic dancing. From what I saw in person during daytime to finals on the feed, y’all cleaned up that tap number especially. It’s good when it’s good, and a bit awkward when things go wrong. I imagine that tap number and effect will need some refining as you approach SCN. I loved the ballad and the closer, in between I didn’t care much for the girls number - it felt slow and out of place compared to the emotion from the ballad and the energy in the closer. I’m not sure I’m used to seeing FFE as intense as y’all were in the closer. It seemed a bit frantic, but controlled amidst all that. Boingers sounded great as usual. Nice showing overall! I was glad I got a chance to catch your show.
Lastly, I've said it before and I'll say it again -- Medina Midwest Showcase is one of the best events in Ohio. Hands down. The venue is stunning, the volunteers are super friendly, and the organization (it runs ON time) is seriously hard to beat.
Medina's audience today raised $1,780.00 during our Show Choirs For Thirst Miracle Minute!! What this means, is that the kindness and compassion of performers and parents, gave over SEVENTY people in the African nation of Eswatini clean water for life!!!! God bless you guys.....you have shown the power of show choir to change the world!!!! What a great day f incredible performances!!
