Well... I've come to post some sad news...
Great River is cancelled for 2006 due to lots of varying reasons.
It was officially cancelled on November 21st… but I waited to post it until I knew that all participating schools were notified.

An email was sent out to all Davenport West and Central kids detailing several factors into why we cancelled it.

The major reason was that having the “Great River” in the River Center, would be a financial and logistical nightmare. With the Adler under major renovation, it entailed us creating a stage with lighting and sound systems brought in. (something we aren’t used to spending money on) We looked at the financial variables for this, and we had a good possibility of going into the hole.

A lot of our normal schools who wanted to come also informed us that due to budget cuts they could not afford to attend.

“Great River” WILL return in 2007. I can guarantee right now it will. The Adler will be completed with its brand new widened stage, and the competition will also have some new features.

I hope everyone understands!

If anyone has questions please PM me, or email me at [email protected]. Thanks!

Do you know what it is they're remodeling in the Adler? That place was already so gorgeous, and I have a hard time believing that they can do anything to make the stage bigger, which was really the only problem I had with it. (And not having a performer's entrance, but I don't think that's changeable, either.)

Surprisingly... they are making the stage larger.

Here's some info from some articles I found...

Crews are expanding the stage by about 15-feet to accommodate more modern shows and bigger sets. They're also upgrading heat, air, lighting and the sound systems -- along with riggings. They say it used to take three men to pull these ropes. J eff Barsness project engineer says, “This is old rigging, old sets, what's gonna happen, put it above here to make it easier so backstage hands can handle material easier and do sets quicker and more efficient.” The project will cost about eight million dollars -- and you can see it all for yourself when the Adler Theatre re-opens next fall.

"We will be looking to bring in some of the first-run shows. Potential examples are The Producers, 42nd Street, Les Miserables, Hairspray. Those are the type of shows we'll be able to do once the renovation is done. Obviously, we'll continue to do our comedy acts and pop acts as well as cultural arts."

They are basically tearing down the old Blackhawk hotel (the city purchased it from $750,000) in back of the Adler to make the stage larger. The other half of the hotel they are re-developing.

I can't wait till it's finished!

Wow, I feel silly now. Can't believe I missed that.

That will certainly be an interesting competition. I guess that's a good venue as far as SIZE goes, but much luck to the poor souls in charge of trying to make it acoustically worthy. That place is like the mother of all gymnasiums- massive, hard, and boxy. And when you put in chairs and stadium seating (I *hope* they put in stadium seating) and fill them with people... Well, it will be quite the experience, in many ways.

Nuts- who put Great River and Kennedy on the same day? That kinda sucks...

And tell me, Jorge- where IS Great River being held this year? As I recall, the Adler is going to be in ruins while they renovate, or something. (Though what there could possibly be to renovate there, I don't know.) If you're holding it at West again, how on earth are you going to fit all the choirs/spectators into your school?

Kennedy had to move their competition date... and the "Great River" date was the only one that worked best and was most sensible. I hear next year, they will be moving their competition to another date... so it's only for one year.

As to having the competition at West... it's not going to be there... but my preferance would have been to have it there. West is a very large school, and fitting choirs/spectators in it would be no problem... but we are having the competition at the River Center. I don't know where everything is going to be... but I know for sure that the performance venue will be "the airplane hanger", for those of you veterans of Great River who know what I'm talking about.

Great River 2007 will be held in the newly remodeled Adler Theatre! Just one year of inconvenience... I promise.
