Someone should notify the prairie prep group kids that it's not cool to take up the entire second row of seating during the Xavier performance, forcing many Xavier parents and fans to the 3rd 4th and 5th rows. Very unclassy.
Thanks for saying something I'll be sure to let our director know if I don't talk to them myself. Like Jarod said, yesterday 90% of the Focal Pointers experienced their first ever competition and they just didn't know any better. They definitely were not trying to be rude and I hope people can forgive that knowing each and every one of us had our first competition not knowing the dynamic at all either! Mine being a year ago today at The Big Dance actually
I'd also just like to give a little summary of the groups I saw and just some thoughts on the day overall as well!
One thing I kind of forgot about with Davenport's gym is it totally just eats your words and I think most, if not all, groups dealt with issues on that throughout the day, even the groups that sing well. The gym was almost as hot as the mics they had too making it hard to get that intensified change in dynamic if a group wanted to go soft. Really testing the choirs vocal strength.
For the most part I heard and saw nothing but good sportsmanship throughout the day. Everyone supporting everyone else which is definitely the way it should be!
Happiness: As always I was impressed with the way they sang and their a cappella ballad was on point, as well as the female soloist leading into it! Great show guys!
In-Step: WOW. I don't think I've ever been that impressed with a prep group. The whole package was their the singing was crisp and powerful, I was sitting in the way back and you sounded just as good as the other varsity groups I watched. Dynamics were fantastic as well, well deserved finalist!
City High: I loved your show design and costumes throughout the show! Another amazing female solo as well which blew me away. I loved the horn feature at the end to show them off because I think everyone knows by now how great of a band you guys have
Davenport North: Even though it was just an exhibition for you guys, holy cow! You guys brought it, great energy, vocals, choreo, the whole show was a great way to top off the night. You definitely got the crowd going!
Last but not least I have to give a shout out to Focal Point! You guys have come so far and your show has grown stronger than I could have even imagined. Not only do I see how much fun you're having on stage but I see it before and after rehearsals and at awards and it makes me so happy to see you all enjoying it! Kelby has been melting the Ambassador's hearts ever since he got the male ballad solo and even though we tell him all the time he is so so humble and I am so happy for him!
Once again it was a great day of competition, crazy of course, but hey it's show choir what else is new
Besides the fact that no scoring system is perfect, it seems super counterintuitive to tell one group they danced and sang better than anyone there, then tell another group that they were the best group.
Anyway here's what I thought if finals. After watching finals I had it:
GC: LinnMar
1RU: Xavier
2RU: Prairie
3RU: Kennedy
4RU: Davenport Central
5RU: City High
6RU: InStep.
With choreo to LinnMar as well as vocals. I though Xavier and LinnMar were close, I thought prairie and Kennedy were close, and then the rest. I was surprised Kennedy didn't pass dav central. Also kinda surprised that prairie placed as high as they did. LinnMar, in my opinion, was the best group out there. Also that Dav Central band was on point. They can jam.
How do you win vocals and choreo and now win the grand championship?? Very interesting.. Anyways congrats to everyone who competed! Heard it was a great day of show choir!
It didn't apply for this competition but it can happen when they use daytime scores for captions. I've seen competitions hold off giving captions until finals but only use the daytime scores to calculate them. That way someone could win both but not do as well in finals at not win.

Great day of competition I wish I could get the scores to put some more light on the situation as well! Linn mar obviously brought the heat in finals! Congrats to everyone who competed!!
Ok so how they score finals is they have a vocals section, choreo section, and overall section. They convert the vocal and choreo scores into ranks to determine captions, but the overall section score is what determines placements. They announced it at the awards ceremony in order to explain the situation.
Still so weird seeing BV, BC, 1RU. Like I see it this way, you're basically telling a group they were the best singers and dancers at a singing and dancing competition. It just doesn't make sense to me how they still can't win GC. I know it happens and I know it was super super close. I just feel like both of those captions should equal a GC. Congrats to all groups!
Not sure if this is the place to express those feelings but I know that for the majority of focal point's members, it is their first competition ever so I am sure they just didn't know. No hard feelings but I am sure they didn't mean to be rude knowing alot of those kids.
Where else would I express this? I'm not claiming they were intending to be rude, just trying to get the word out. The more you know...
