Maybe mic technique isn't part of the curriculum at some schools. I still don't know what to do when I hold a mic (not really) but I try. I do some hand things and point sometimes, raise my eyebrows a bit. But I'm not goin down on one knee singing like its my last day on earth.

Nick, I'm just talking about certain people who get TOO into it.

I know I am so excited to see you guys again this year! Our group just loved your show last year and I am sure you won't dissapoint this year.

We'll try not to. I aboslutely can't wait to see Totino in New York. I'm not usually a big Midwest show choir fan, but your entire group won me over, it was incredible. And I met someone at the theme park who was really nice! That's going to be probably the pinacle competition of my show choir years, especially seeing your choir again.

I agree with you Katie. It was pretty bad.

The thing that stuck out to me was that every soloist had odd body movements when then sang. Whether it was bending the knees, kneeling down to the ground, or hand motions, they were SO over the top it wasn't even funny. I know I said every soloist, but don't take that literally.

well--personally i love it when soloists get into it... its so boring when they just stand there, its like "wow, gorgeous voice... totally boring person." the girl in powerhouse, she is legendary, im pretty sure her name is Agina, i LOVE her, first off, phenomenal voice, second off, she is so much fun to watch because the soul in her voice is even that much more believable because she gets so into it. SO i say, kudos to the soloists who get into it.. as long as they have good mic technique and are belting instead of screaming.. there IS a difference, despite popular belief.

I was the one that said "less is more", and Arcadia is a EXTREMELY good example of that. I wouldn't say they go to an extreme with how extravagant their show is (less). Also they DEFINITELY do not sing so loud that they are actually screaming, and they got First place and Music. What more reason do you need? The whole idea behind "less is more" was referring to the groups who sang at an unhealthy volume. To me it sounded like people were shouting on stage.

Obviously by definition less is less and more is more. But it is a butchered definition that the less you do of something, the more you get out of it. BUT by all means this is NOT true in all cases. I'm just referring to the show choir singing and shows.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought certain groups were just YELLING on stage the whole time. It got painful really, but then the Citrus sound system also worked really well for some groups, and bad for others (there was feedback all through Mark Keppel's acapella that drove me insane!!) Soloists were even worse at times, abusing the mic with loud unnecessary riffing. I really do like Arcadia in that sense because the one soloist they had didn't abuse the mic and mixed well with the group.

Somebody posted that less is more.

It is not. More is more. Less is less. That is why their called less and more.

You can achieve a big controlled sound. I think a small sound throughout a whole show is a flaw. You should be able to sound like a different choir with every different song. Since different songs require different interpretations. But thats just my opinion.

Congratulations to everyone at Aztec! I had a great time watching everyone. Great way to start off the Show Choir Competition Season.

Arcadia -- I love you guys this year. And you guys are doing my FAVORITE show choir song of all time: That's When The Music Takes Me. I wish we did that song my year. Rene (the choreographer, for anyone who doesn't know) really did a great job with the show and everything is exciting, sharp, and entertaining. I was very hesitant when I heard you guys were doing "Remember" but I really think that song MADE the show at Aztec. Loved it. If the band plays a little bit faster next time, making you have a little bit more energy, I think you guys can make up that 1/3 of a point and take home Showmanship too! REALLY good job. Oh yeah, and I can't wait to see You May Be Right, or whatever it's called!

Just wanted to comment on Chanteurs. Everyone else, like I said, was awesome and fun to watch. Thanks for an entertaining night!

What impressed me the most and also bothered me the most on Friday was the audience. It seems to be a particularly intelligent, "with it" group of performers this year. Several times during the show there was room for audience participation (clapping mostly) and not only did people participate, but they also, for the most part, had the musical sense of where to stop. By the end of Diamond Bar's opener, the audience was stopping on a dime...very impressive.

Don't get me wrong, I love an excited, loud crowd. However, if the same intelligence could be applied, there would be less yelling, screaming and other noise that actually intrudes upon the performances. I'm all for big cheers as they announce a group and as the curtain goes up...but I think we can all sense when the show is about to start. Its really all about starting to listen just a bit earlier. Same thing goes for between songs.

I think its going to be a great year.
