I had a great time watching this competition! Last time I was here was in 06 when it was in the Gym... this "new" venue is beautiful! Congrats to Urbandale for hosting a great competition! And you had nachos which will win me over every time.

A lesson I think observers need to remember with all show choir is your favorite show is not always the best show of the day.

That's a really good point Chris. My favorite show of the day at Benton (taking Valley's out because I am biased of course) was easily 4th Ave Jazz's show. That said, I knew that Waukee's show was still the best of the day.

Just wanted to take a minute and thank all those "nameless" parents, directors and volunteers that make this such a well run competition. All of you make this one of the most enjoyable venues we come to. Keep up the great work.

Mitchell put their heart in that performance. I promise.

I'm sure you did! I don't think there are many groups with 6/7 judge votes for first that didn't put their heart and soul into it. Sadly there's some bias here but not from everyone. I'm happy to see Mitchell do so well! Congrats to you and your group for earning this one

Very bummed Cenntenial didn't get 1st. You could tell they put their heart and soul into it. I just didn't get the same vibe from Mitchell. All that matters is that Spectrum changed lives tonight. GO SPECTRUM!

Or easier still in consensus ranking- out of 7 judges, 4 had the 2nd place school ahead of the three judges who had the 3rd place school. You can always compare 2 schools head to head.
Henceforth the definition of consensus. Point or rank swings go away.

The Olympics figured this out in 1995. That way, the Russian judge (ex.) can't control the outcome.
Then more people will talk about skating, gymnastics, or show choir - not the biases. Good for students, directors, judges, parents, etc.

Wow...the advocate of the "Fehr Fair" system himself showed up to set us straight! That's basically what I was trying to say too, Mr. Fehr, but you just said it much more economically than I could.

So AC had 16 overall "points" and Johnston had 21, but more 2nd place votes.
How is it determined that Ankeny was 2nd? Isn't first place strictly based on who has the most first place votes?

Yes, but Ankeny also had one 1st place vote to go with their 3 second place votes.

In a consensus ranking system you're essentially looking at the remaining groups and determining who finished highest (among the remaining groups) on the judges' score sheets. It's hard to tell, because the automatic editing on the forum removed the additional spaces I tried to add to line them up, but the judges votes are listed for each group in order from Judge 1 on the far left to Judge 7 on the far right.

So after determining Mitchell was first thanks to their winning 6 of the 7 judges' votes you throw them out and move on to the remaining 5 groups.

Johnston won (among remaining groups) on the sheets of judges 1, 2, and 5,
Centennial won (among remaining groups) on the sheets of juges 3, 4, 6, and 7.

So it was pretty close, but Centennial got 4 of 7 votes for 1st runner up.

I'll have them by either tomorrow or Tuesday for sure. Otherwise Jeff probably has that info.

I'd just like to say that it was an absolute pleasure to work with FDC, Stephen, and Mr. Miller. Very proud to say that I hosted you!
Anyway.
After prelims Ankeny was ahead of Mitchell by 8 points.
The two visual judges had Mitchell in first, while the vocal judges had Mitchell in 2nd and 6th.

In finals, Mitchell received 6 first place votes and 1 third place vote, I would assume the majority of 2nd place votes went to Ankeny.

I'd just like to preface this by saying I absolutely LOVE Ankeny's show this year, and I did see it live (in its entirety) at Linn-Mar.
However, I do understand how they aren't dominating everything this year. This show is still a very "dark" (in the theatre like aspect) show, especially for Iowa. They have very dark and consistent vowel placement which I personally like, but it sometimes can seem monotonous when you get the same harmonies for the a lot of the show. The groups that have placed ahead of them give a wide variety of sound and especially when a group like Mitchell can come in and take choreo, which is usually Ankeny's to lose, there isn't much left to really push ankeny ahead, meaning the judges can lean more towards personal preference.

Just my 2 cents :p

I left please post results....

ha! Assumed you were posting, Chris.

I was sitting up with the Ankeny parents. I was very impressed by their class when it was announced they came in second.

Don't get me wrong, Mitchell had a great show! I just felt centennials was better. All subjective, I suppose. Congrats to everybody tonight! This was probably my last competition, since my sister is graduating. Kind of a bittersweet night. Hopefully I live in a state with show choir a few decades from now so I can send my kids.

Have a good night, everyone! Travel safely.

Looks like all of those thumbs downs were a little misplaced...

Haha! First thing I thought when I saw the results on Twitter! Its interesting that so many are upset about Ankeny getting 2nd a few times. Obviously judges disagree multiple times now. They are getting beat by great groups, and their show is still great! I stand with Jeff: second is still a great placement.

Way to go Mitchell on the big win!!

I thought Ankeny Centennial would sweep this after what I saw, but I guess I was wrong! So much physical power from Spectrum... And I had Millard with their great vocal performance as a potential spoiler, not Mitchell (though they didn't disappoint at all with their usual too cool show design). Congrats to Johnston - who continues their record at this invitational with this being their 24th consecutive appearance in finals. Next year 25! A great day of great shows.
