And if this is true, it's also quite sucky. Getting a penalization for something that had nothing to do with your show?
You see it more and more these days. I know at Emmetsburg, if you brought food or whatever into your homeroom, they would disqualify you. Well, that's what our roomhosts told us, anyway. Its really harsh, in my opinion. The home room is supposed to be that-a room that feels like home. Next thing you know, they'll tell you that you can't sleep in the home room, or have music! I understand the concept behind it, but come on. They're teenage kids.
The reason I don't think the judges should be too closley associated with the host group is because I think it is already so subjective, it's just adding another bias. I'm not saying that happened at Hersey, but I think it's risky. For example say group one beats the host group at an earlier competition. Now group one comes to a competion at host groups school. Host group judge, who choreographed host group, and worked with host group is annoyed group one did better at earler competition. Judge thinks his show is MUCH better AND he thinks group one only won because their director is best friends with a judge at earlier competition. So subconsciously or consciously, they are not going to judge fairly.
I just wish and maybe it's not possible, that judges were complete outsiders. Of course they would have to know what they are looking at and hearing, but I wish they didn't really know the groups at all. It's all so incestuous if you know what I mean.
Sometimes I see groups going home, not making finals and I think " no way!" But I know this is how it's done and I'm sure it's not going to change. It's just something I never understood about show choir.
Just so everyone knows, Ms. Mac choreographed for other show choirs in the competition. She has no ties to BG anymore and that is not the reason they won. She is a professional and would never bias judging because she used to be the director, plus she didnt place BG in first for choreography anyways. Both Weaton and BG were awesome and it was a very close competition for the two of them.
Why the host group? If the judges don't have any ties to the groups competing, than what does it matter if they have ties to the host group? A lot of competitions held by high school show choir's will have their own choreographer come in and critique/judge. What is wrong with that?
I agree with Adam. As long as the judges have no ties with any of the groups competing, it's not a problem.
And judges should have no ties to any groups in my opinion ( even the host group).

I was also disappointed in the sound system. I am biased, but I get sick of watching cookie cutter shows, you would think the judges would be impressed with something different. Guess not. And the kids should be judged on how they preform a show. Did it sound good, were they clean and able to sing well with DIFFICULT Choreography? They don't pick the show or costumes they just perform it. And judges should have no ties to any groups in my opinion ( even the host group).
According to a friend of mine who is in Milton, they had a major penalty for bringing food into their homeroom, which pushed them into 6th. I wouldn't say I'm a hundred percent on that, but that is what she told me.
I don't believe that happened. According to Mr Schrank, the point spread for groups 4, 5, and 6 was simply extremely close and Milton happened to be on the low end of the closely packed groups. To the Milton folks, I know Mr Schrank was very proud of your shows yesterday, so feel good about competing well in a fantastic line-up! God Bless
