I don't know who they use but i hate the way they have the soloist mic playing over everything else, especially when it is a solo that goes in and out throughout the song...

We had a particularly low score from one judge, so we kind of put off listening to the tape, and then decided we just needed to do it and hear whatever was said. I felt all the judges were so helpful and constructive! They were very quick to point out the work that we had done in addition to pointing out the work we could still do. They were tremendously positive and we had a great day in class today listening to our tapes and making our to-do list for the week. Our overall feeling about the weekend was very positive and educational.
Thanks to Manchester! We enjoyed our visit and will be back again next year!
Whoa...are you serious? I will only talk about Cosby on this one...they were amazing from day one. While they were a new show choir, from what has been explained to me from students in that area...what happened was that students were rezoned from programs that already had great show choirs. So while their show choir was new, their kids were not. They were 1st at every competition I had the fortune to see them in.
like i've told you before when you asked me for my opinion
about your group. you keep saying to yourself and your kids
that you're small and YOU KNOW you can't compete with the
dale's and the cosby's and the hanover's and the other groups
who are prominant now. how do you think they got there?
i know when i was in dale, it started out as being great singers,
then came the choreo and then everything else. you build from
the ground up. you need to have perfect practice to be perfect.
it applies to vocals, choreo, everything but above all is vocals.
choreo is supposed to compliment the vocals. not the other way
around. but you need to stop saying that yall can't compete. you have
to get the growing pains out of the way, understand exactly who
you have in your choir and work from there. work to their advantages.
choose songs that compliment there voices. we were never that amazing
in the beginning but we never stopped. when we didn't place, we weren't
just happy with our little trophy like someone else said earlier. and even when
we placed, we were still coming in class that next monday looking at what
we could improve on. that's all it is. constant improvement and upkeep.
never being satisfied. that's what you need to become one of the better groups.
and in my earlier posts i didn't mean to be angry or whatnot. i'm just perplexed
why you keep puting yourself down by saying you can't compete. you can, it just
takes time. yall have been a group now, what, 4 years? some schools are blessed
with a lot of singers. some you have to go out looking for them. you just have to
play with the hand your dealt. i'm sure yall will get it eventually. because your choir
def has some talent. you just need to harness it with the right songs and the right show.
that's all. i know it's more difficult than it sounds, but i think you can do it.
now i sound retarded. i'll stop now since i have to read a book and study for an evolution
quiz tomorrow.
I think I like it that way, though...with the vocals being worth so much. That's what's important to me, so it works for me (esp. since our choreography is apparently not a hit this year). It makes it hurt less...lol.

Yeah, but you would be surprised to see that a lot of them don't seem to get that it is a show CHOIR, and consider the singing only a small portion of the overall shopw. Vocals aren't 2/3 of the score like in most VA comps.

I don't know what the absolute answer is on divisions. I'm sure, like everything else, there isn't one answer that will make everyone happy.
Even in small show choirs...you run into dedication problems...trust. You don't even see it coming, either!
In a small show choir...you're right...everyone HAS to carry their own weight. Everyone totally matters. One person out is enough to ruin the blocking for my whole show...
As I'm reading, I can't believe how big show choir is in the midwest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's insane!
I'm really a big fan of shows with themes. It seems to hold the show better together.
I'm not really sure if it should be strictly a size determination. More often than not, a smaller chpir is preferred to a larger choir. B/C more often than not, you'll end up having some people that arent as dedicated.
I have seen choirs with 23 talented singers oust huge supergroups with over 40. Personally I think it is far easier to have 50 people in a group b/c you have so much stuff going on that people don't have to sing out and individuals don't stand out. You can have the first row doing the challenging choreo and have the rest of the choir do blocking changes.
I think that once a group wins one or two superior ratings and places a couple of times, they should move on to the higher division.
But about the whole A-AAAA thing, the midwest is really all about big everything. Big hair, big sets, big amounts of cymbals, and big choirs. It's really a whole different type of choir altogether.
P.S. We did "The way you look tonight" a few years ago, and the judge absolutely hated it b/c she said we should have sung it with no vabrato as a jazz song. It was our interpretation, and she hated it just because it wasn't what she wanted to sing. Our director said that he didnt want to teach us that style of singing b/c it teaches you to stifle your vabrato, so he just ignored her comments. ...subjectivity...

Thank you for your kind words. I think Hanover is a great choir, and always love seeing your shows. If you haven't seen our show this year, you may not have noticed I take a lot of cues from your choir. We used a theme for the first time this year. Also, I was so moved by your ballad, I went in the same sort of direction with mine. Unfortunately for us, the judges were not moved. I guess I still have to find what works for us.
I'm not sure how long other areas of the country have been doing divisions, but some places in the midwest really break it down. I was just reading a thread where they have A-AAAA divisions! Basically for every ten more people you have, there is a new division. I'm not sure we have enough show choirs around here to jump on that bandwagon, but I would be in love with competitions really sticking to above 30 and below 30.
I definitely agree that people will remember the sportsmanship of your group. I'm just not sure that's what they remember the most.
