Hey anyone know where the Johnston pictures are? I heard Dave Walter photography but it doesnt look like he's posted them (and has things posted from later dates).

Urbandale- You guys are good this year, as always. It's a typical urbandale show, as people have said before, and I love urbandale shows. I especially thought your choreography was really cool, throughout your show.. props to Damon. I did feel like your show kind of started out really good and then kind of went downhill energy wise though. Maybe I was just tired or something.. who knows.
This is exactly what I thought about Urbandale when I saw them at Linn-Mar. The opener is just so high-energy, that the rest of the show kind of follows. And I agree with Steph. Having a typical Urbandale show isn't a bad thing. The typical Urbandale show just has a certain style that NO other group has.

I believe that he was at the other part of the competition, the prep choirs/middle schools which happens at the high school center. At night they bring those judges over to the middle school center to judge the varsity finals. It's confusing, but I believe that it what happened.
I know it said that John Hickling didn't score in finals due to his ties with Valley... but what about day round? It's basically the same thing? Or did he judge something different? Some one fill me in or clear me up.

Valley- OK, you guys have REALLY good vocals this year. Like, your ballad, was soooo beautiful. And your closer rocks, especially your band. After I saw a few groups after you, I knew you guys were going to make finals. MAJOR props! PS, way jealous that you're going to Hawaii... I love hawaii.
haha thanks! We worked so hard to be where we are so i'll forward that to the rest of the group And as for Hawaii- its amazing and all but it took 2 competitions away from us . Oh well, its hawaii ill take it!!! lol
Just curious (and I mean this in the most non-pissy way), but what does it mean when people say it was a "typical Urbandale show"? Is that a bad thing or a good thing? I don't think you necessarily meant it as a bad thing, but then other times I'll read it and it seems to be a somewhat derogatory comment.
Well, in my case it's definitely a good thing! I think it's kind of like the general show design that Studio seems to follow every year.. a really high energy opener, a cool/different 2nd number, amazing ballad with really cool arrangements, and a fun closer. Also, it seems that Damon Brown knows this formula really well, and gives them really effective choreography. There's always something in every number that makes me go "whoa that was really sweet." And aside from that, I think it's just the style that they sing and perform in that is always consistent from year to year.
Also... you could just as easily say the same about Ankeny having a 'typical ankeny show'... show-offy opener, big ballad, hip hop number, tap closer. So it doesnt just apply to Urbandale

We'll be working on making our closer special. Hopefully, super-special. "Shaking the Blues Away" has been a challenging closer to work with, I think because we don't quite get the meaning of the song yet. And if you don't get it, how can you possibly get INTO it? It's got that old-timey feel, which is fine for show choir in general, but it can take a little while for us young people to understand it fully, make it work with out personalities, and infuse our own energy into it. You don't have that problem with the opening songs because everyone knows them and they're all new and and hip and groovy, etc. Regardless, we'll fix it. If you're going to see ATSC, don't plan to nap through our closer just yet!
I totally understand what you mean. I hope you guys rock it out the next time I see you!

Omaha- You guys had the best ballad of the day, hands down. It's really beautiful, and really well performed. I agree with what Adam said about you from Onalaska... it's like your first few numbers are pretty good, and build up to your ballad, and then your guy/ girl number is pretty cool, and then your closer is just kind of, there. I don't know if you kind of run out of steam or what, but at the end I was like, oh, that's it? Ok. Great job though, 1st runner up well deserved!
What no smileys for us? Where's the love??

OK, well I was only at this competition for the daytime round, and I didn't see all of the 4A groups. I also lost my program so I can't remember a lot of the individual songs that were performed. BUT here's what I remember. AND these are only my opinions...
CR Washington- So, I don't really remember your show, BUT, your opening soloist, is my new favorite singer. I thought for sure he was going to win Best male.
Kennedy- Ok, I love you guys. But, I just felt like, this year, your novelty is great, as always... but because it's so good, the rest of your show kind of leaves the audience wanting more. Well, me anyways, I can't speak for everyone else. I was so excited to see your "uninvited"... and it was cool, but just not all the way there yet. I wish I could see you guys later on in the season. You have a good show this year!
Ankeny- For anyone who wants to know, VA's show this year is:
Bliss (written by members of va)
Coming Home
On My Way
Signed Sealed Delivered
42nd Street Medley
Apparently, you guys really stepped it up in finals. As far as the day round goes, though.... everyone knows that you are going to sound good, and be really clean. BUT, when you look at your faces and only see maybe 25% of the choir really performing, who cares? You have a good show this year, but you have to sell it. You have to put real passion and real emotion into every performance, or no one's going to believe you. That said, congrats, I'm proud!

I especially thought your choreography was really cool, throughout your show.. props to Damon. I knew you guys were going to be in first place during the day, because you out- performed everyone else. I did feel like your show kind of started out really good and then kind of went downhill energy wise though. Maybe I was just tired or something.. who knows. I'm sure you guys stepped it up in finals just as much as anybody else... when competitions are as close as this one though, it is so easy for the top 2 or 3 groups to be switched around. You guys were great... I'm excited to see you at your invitational.
I didn't see Waukee live... but congrats on making finals!

Well i only had a chance to watch groups after we performed at 1:40, (Jefferson, Kennedy, Waukee, Westside, Ankeny, Urbandale) and i thought they were all VERY good. Jefferson had a tap number again which was very cool and together- Kennedy did some song about food or something? not sure what that was called but it was WAY cool- Waukee's Disco Medly was awesome very well put together- ATSC's Vocals were amazing- Ankeny was my favorite, and Urbandale's choreography was amazing (props to Damon Brown). Didn't get a chance to see Bloomington and Washington but i heard they were very good as well. The competition was very fun- they do need to double the size of the auditorium though. My favorite part of competitions is sitting down and watching other choirs- they asked us to go watch in the lunch room if we were in choirs. They need to either invite less people or change the site of the competition.
Thankyou so much! We've worked so hard on that Disco Medly. You guys were so fun to watch as well!
We appreciate all your comments and will discuss them at our wrap-up meeting. The fact that a number of metro schools chose to come to SHOWZAM resulted in greater-than-usual numbers of friends and family members attending from the immediate area, and we made every effort to accommodate all our guests as best we could. We're grateful that so many wonderful choirs from the metro and elsewhere competed in SHOWZAM, and it's always our goal to make the competition enjoyable and comfortable for all involved.
Please know we'll keep your concerns in mind as we work with our directors to plan SHOWZAM 2009. Best wishes to all of you for continued success this season.

I'd really like to hear shows and thoughts on all the shows

Ankeny feels very fortunate to win at night at Johnston. Congratulations to Studio for their strong performance in the afternoon..they deserved the top placing. Anytime you add more judges to the mix the results can change. We have certainly
had that go the other way and it's something you learn to live with in show choir. Ankeny was in first place last year at FAme Orlando heading into the finals and lost out to John Burroughs. Stuff happens. Lots of excellent choirs at Johnston. Tip of the hat to Valley..you guys are coming on strong..that's great. Studio and ATSC..top notch as usual. Mr. Temple is right on..the choirs go out and perform the best they can on a given Saturday and the rest is up to the particular panel of judges on that day.
There will always be differences of opinion at an adjudicated event..look at gymnastics!!!!! Was that
a 9.8 or a 9.9 floor exercise???? Good luck to all choirs as they try to improve and raise their scores next time out.
Whoever the people are that are posting under the name of Urbandale "Studio" need to stop right now.
We performed and did the best show we could. The judges judged and made their decision and we are fine with that.
Ankeny and Omaha are both outstanding programs and I have no problem whatsoever with the finals placings. You aren't doing anything more than giving our program a bad name with your posts.
