I always thought it was odd that the "host school" was a competitor. I like the fact that ISSMA is at a neutral site. I don't like the fact another top Indiana school won't be competing at the state competition.
Hosting ISSMA state is not the same as a school hosting its own competition. ISSMA officials control most aspects of the contest including everything that happens inside the performance hall. ISSMA provide the judges and tabulation people, light and sound techs, video/photography staff/vendors, MCs and backstage staff, choir check-in staff and practice/warm up room oversight. Host schools supply volunteers familiar with the facility to assist, if needed, but are hand-off anything directly related to the competition. They mostly provide the things outside like food and other vendors, crowd and parking control as well as doing the ticket sales and cleanup.
Granted the host schools choir is familiar with the performance stage. However at this point in the season with most of the choirs having performed at several competitions they are generally comfortable with adapting to a stage so this advantage is reduced.
I am so excited for this weekend. I haven't seen many of this year's groups who are participating. Is there any one I should watch for? Besides all of them. lol

Were the time slots determined by qualifying scores?
If someone other than ISSMA wants to put on a state show choir competition, I'm all for it. But until then, I think ISSMA's getting what's coming to them. People don't like how they are doing things, so they aren't participating.
I don't think it's a bad thing. ISSMA's trying to put show choir in a box, regulating riser formations, no finals and all that jazz. Instead of working with a medium that came into being without ISSMA's help, they've tried to put their own stamp on things. They've tried to bring a very non-traditional performing art under a very traditional umbrella. That just doesn't work.
Very well said. There have been too many flukes and issues with issma and they tried to make show choir state like band but its definitely not and not having finals is ridicuolous when ALL the qualifiers have them.
I wish that all Indiana groups HAD to compete at state. Like a sectionals, then the best 2 or 3 of those groups advance to state. That way ALL the best groups attend. Just an idea. I like the groups going, but am VERY disappointed with all the GREAT Indiana groups not attending. Several of the best groups will not be there.

Last year was almost like that, everyone was so good. Personally, I think the closest we'll ever get to that caliber of competition was Fairfield this year, and some people are still arguing about the results.
So I think it's better to keep it as a "wouldn't it be awesome" instead of a "man, those results are whacked!" y'know?
maybe someone should start a fantasy show choir league? pick your favorite performers and directors and choreographers and then.. i don't know, what do you do with fantasy football teams? lol.

The problem with that is the added cost of another competition, so a group would have to cut one to add this, which would just be a nightmare I am sure. And then to add the fact that there are some people out there that do not agree with ISSMA and what they do, so why would they want to be forced to go to it?

Actually, Carroll and HN tied but HN had best vocals so they got GC. All finals groups brought their A game and it was an incredible evening of talent!
sorry I didn't know. no one has barely said anything about the competition or caption results.
