This is just my ignorance, but how do the groups get awarded medals? Is it if a group hits a certain score, you qualify for that medal? If so, what are the scores that would qualify a group for a certain medal?

Yes groups have to reach a certain point threshold to receive a gold, silver, or bronze medal. These thresholds change based on the scoring systems used at each competition. Most Northeast comps use GRB's template, but Andover uses Carmen and I'm not sure what their baseline scores are

Like, what's the significance of the medal if there's already GC, 1RU and 2RU? Is it just like an extra award?

It's a way to drive a group to make more strides and better themselves by providing a known threshold to work towards. It's a system that I think should be utilized more across the country in my opinion.

So are they given out at the evening awards or at the Single-Gender awards? Like haha could you just give me like a full breakdown of the purpose and info about them? I feel so clueless.

They’re given at each awards ceremony. Every choir in every division receives a medal. Gold, silver, bronze are all determined by the choirs raw score. Medals are also indicative of placements even before placements are announced, which I guess is both a positive and negative thing. So basically at awards ceremonies they’ll announce judges awards and Soloist awards, then give each group their medal, then announce BV BC BB and placements. Like Dom said, the purpose of them is to give groups something to shoot for other than a placement. For example, groups in NE work all year to get a gold medal in addition to trying to place high. I hope this cleared your questions up somewhat

I love the idea. I think it rewards a group regardless of placement. You can aim for a medal and have a sense of accomplishment regardless of placement. Not that this matters for top-tier groups, but it’s great for mid, lower or developing choirs.

The specific breakdown for ratings at this particular competition through Carmen Scoring is:

Bronze - Minimum 69% of Total Available Score
Silver - Minimum 70% of Total Available Score
Gold - Minimum 87% of Total Available Score

This is the same for all three divisions.
