It was a nice competition; outdoors, pleasant evening, groups performed quite well. I can understand that in an emergency situation, a group might have to drop out of a competition; but there were five groups that did not show up. This puts a burden on the hosts and possibly prevents some other group from attending the competition. They could not have many groups perform (12 were scheduled) because they had to finish by 10:00 p.m. (city ordinance). Some groups that wanted to come could not because the festival was filled. If you think that you are going to have to pull out, common courtesy would indicate that you do so early so that the hosts could find a replacement. Since admission was free, there was no burden on them financially (except they sold food and had too much left over because of the smaller number of participants and crowd), but still, it is not a good thing to do. There is such a thing as commitment. I would think that hosts would hesitate asking you to come in the future if they think that you are not reliable. It's something that you might think about for the future.
