4:00 am call time at the school tomorrow morning! I can't wait to be in new york!! I wish we had more free time though, and less broadway shows...i don't wanna sit and watch more singing and dancing. I want to explore the city!! is everyone else seeing Billy Elliot & Memphis too?

I like and dislike that the small groups have there own finals. I like it because it allows those talented groups another chance to perform, but I think that the small groups competing here are great and should compete for overall finals positions. Just make it six or seven finalist overall (seven allowing another group to be apart of finals) and let them all compete together. Just my thoughts.
I would have to say that this is definitely where I think a lot of people stand in this dilemma. I personally, for this specific competition, am more 'pro-separation' in the fact that it will definitely allow groups of each division to shine and compete against groups who are more of their speed. It also creates less competition for the groups in their respective divisions (unless the number of finalists were increased, of course). But then there are groups like Bonita Vista, competing in small, whom supposedly have already beaten Los Al, whom are competing in large.
But like you've stated, because the small and large groups were mainly divided based on school and group size, the talent factor wasn't looked at. Many of the small groups are excellent, and it would do their schools proud if they did well against both normally categorized small and large division groups. It's like, an example I always refer to is in 2007 when the Marysville "Mini-Swingers" went to Teays Valley. At the time, middle school groups were not able to compete, but the Minis were invited to come and compete in the festival division. We ended up receiving 1st runner-up and beating 10 high school groups out of 11.
If schools were able to choose their divisions, I think it would mainly come down to: how many spots are they offering for finals, and whether or not the group would rather go against bigger and potentially better schools for the 'wow factor', or would they want to compete against schools that aren't as good and guarantee themselves a finalist position.
I strongly agree with this. However, I would switch Findlay and Clover Hill. Only because it's Findlay and I'm sure they have improved their show greatly since they competed against Clover Hill.
we will see if all these predictions come true on saturday at 12 o clock

Also with the small mixed finals at night it could result in a really late night with any possible time delays. Overall, looks to be an amazingly fun two days. I am jealous that I can't compete or even attend but you can bet I will be watching the live feed as soon as I get off work!
While I'm here I would love to make predictions as well:
GC: Los Alamitos (BC)
1RU: Marysville (BV)
2RU: Ben Davis
3RU: Clover Hill
4RU: Findlay
Honestly with the caliber of these five groups it could go anyway. Just depends on what the day brings!
Good Luck to all competing groups!

Having small mixed finals or women's finals is pretty rare, so maybe it's easier to discount them. I'm with you, though, in that I'm on the fence with this one. The time thing doesn't bother me at all, but I know that long competitions can wear on some people. I do agree that it looks to be a really fun competition regardless of how many times we see people perform.
Well I know a bunch of Indiana competitions have (or at least used to have) Single-Gender finals also at competitions, but I don't normally see small mixed finals.
I think it's fun to have two separate divisions at Finale. I don't know how many of those small groups would get to make finals in the large group, just because of the caliber of groups going. I think it probably takes a lot of pressure off those smaller groups. It's going to make my Finale Viewing Party a lot more fun! It'll be neat to see 9 groups in finals, and even though they are in two divisions it'll be interesting to see how they stack up against each other.
Also in regard to the ending time. Sure, the competition could run late. But think of it this way.... Usually if you are the first choir in finals, you might have a few soloists performing before you, but usually you are just running like a chicken with their head cut off trying to get ready in 5 minutes. Having the small finals definitely allows for the large group finals to get a little rest, some food in their bellies, maybe have a nice, free vocal warmup. That sounds a lot better to me than what usually happens at comps.
In regards to my regard... Are the small school finalists going to be announced at the same time as the large group? I would love to give them a little more time after they find out they made finals, although they will get to rest during the LG prelims.

It's interesting, because most of the "pro-finals" reaction I've seen in this topic relate to having the opportunity to see choirs perform twice, that some feel finals elevate a group's level of performance, and that it's a source of pride for groups who make finals even if they don't take home the Grand Champion trophy. By that mindset, we should be having finals for every division at a competition! I guess it just comes down to what we're used to.
