I actually felt like the placements were dead on at night....
Franklin Central - I thought that this was probably the least inventive show of the night, but technically also the best executed. Vocals were superb, and choreography, was not only clean, but also had a fair degree of difficulty to it. Good job, and congrats on a well deserved win!!
DeKalb - Easily the most improved group from day to night! After prelims, I thought finals were questionable for this group. I don't know what happened though, cuz in finals you guys sang 1000x better than in the day, and I actually thought you were one of the better vocal groups there. Costumes are AMAZING! I thought you guys should have won best choreography, but I don't think it was wrong that Franklin Central did. I really thought you and Pike could have gone either way. You guys are singing much better than earlier this season (I actually had you guys in top 3 for vocals), and your visuals are amazing You guys always have the most enjoyable shows, Congrats!
Pike - Another one of my favorite singing groups last night. After prelims, I honestly had this group in first. I thought they sang as well as any other group. I'm not sure why because this group has so much energy, but I just didn't feel the excitement that I did watching Franklin Central's and Dekalb's. Ballad was beautiful, and that soloist was AMAZING! Choreography was clean, but not as difficult as the 2 groups ahead of them. Really couldn't decide between you and Dekalb. Congrats on a great show, and placing well at an extremely hard contest!
Bishop Luers - Not that it wasn't good, but this was my least favorite show in finals. I felt like it was hard to judge them vocally against the other groups, because it felt like literally over 1/2 the show was sang by soloists, who were good, but that is not the point of a choral contest. I loved the dresses in this group....they looked good on everyone! Visually, I didn't really think it compared to the other groups either, because the movement just isn't there....it's clean, but there really just isn't that much movement. I mean I guess the show was executed well for what it was, but it just didn't do it for me and the people sitting near me. I can't decide whether or not I would have given this spot in finals to Warren Central or not. I had this group in 7th after prelims. I'm not sure how this group was beating other groups for best choreography at other contrests...especially F.C. and Dekalb. Congrats on a great placing at a tough contest!
Carroll - This show was certainly....inventive.... You guys sang better than I ever remember Carroll singing in the past few years, but I thought your placing was appropriate. I probably would have given this group 4th in finals w NC gone. Was not in love with the costumes, but I guess they matched the show. Sometimes I thought this group bordered on overly loud, but they did well. Congrats!
--- I'd also like to say a special thank you to the North Central Counterpoints, and esp. to Pat Wiehe for keeping it classy all day long and being very well-mannered about their disqualification. Easily one of the top three groups at this contest....sometimes things just happen, and we have to move one, this group could not have displayed that better. They were especially optimistic and kind to all groups all day. Thank you, and congratulations on a great show!

Honestly, NC's arranger wasn't being sneaky. He tuned the combo and Ms. Pat W. conducted the show. He was listening and taking notes on what to fix for the next show. Mr. Runyan has been doing this for years at Ben Davis with no problems. :} I would like to say Congrats to both groups! great job kids!

Something seems up with this disqualification...why in the world would a director be in the house and then go backstage? That's an obvious no-no, rules or no rules. I've seen before where an assistant director will be in the house to offer a reality view of how things look and what needs to change so the choir isn't at the mercy of a video of questionable quality, but the point of that is so that somebody close to the choir can give an accurate representation of what needs to change and what went well independent of videos of questionable quality or a parent that may not know what to look for in particular. To communicate with the band to change an aspect of the performance during a performance is, I would think, an obvious line to not cross, especially to a director.
I'm sure NC had an awesome show and its too bad for them that they had to lose a shot at finals at a big competition and a state qualifying score, but I don't think that they'll let this mistake happen again.

I believe it is more about having someone in the audience adjusting the sound than the actual communication thing. All other choirs are balancing on stage and back stage, having an ear in the audience affecting the balance is the issue. Just one of the seemingly unfair advantage things.
This is true. A director was in the house, went back to the band to tell them that the drums were too loud and got caught. Thus resulting in DQ.

I've been told that one of their directors was going back and forth between the house and backstage to balance the band and that is why they were DQ'd.
