Yes... West Jones (MS) will be going to Wheaton, and as usual Albertville (AL) and Clinton (MS) travel out of region every year. This is a rarity for Opelika, but I'm betting with Darren Dale (Opelika's directory), we'll be making more trips into the MidWest.

We gotta chow off our Southern Charm somewhere ;)

well the midwest is a great place ;)

I believe Petal is also coming to Wheaton...

Wow! Sounds like it was a great competition.

Congrats to Mt. Zion! AND, congrats Opelika!!! Great job. I'm very interested to hear what people thought of the show.

I hope Opelika makes it a tradition to go to a MidWest event each year.

The "Let It Be" solo was absolutely amazing! Their entire ballad was just jaw-droppingly amazing! I was with my roommate who came along with me just so I wouldn't be alone (so she isn't a show choir guru, haha) & she thought the exact same thing. I would be very surprised if Opelika didn't win GC tonight.

That would be a HUGE win for the south!!!

How were the daytime performances. Do we know the scores of the Championship division?

Also, I'd like to give congratulations to Jasmine for her "Let It Be" solo. It's VERY good, and she's only a sophomore. I'm glad to see she won that!

Congrats to all groups who received awards, and good luck to all the finalists (especially Opelika)!

You took that the wrong way. Jeffrey had me pegged above. I simply think that the mixed division and the Single-Gender division shouldn't compete against each other because the dynamics of each division are different.

It's not to say that one division is better than the other, they are just different... and at some competitions they have different score sheets.

I did take you wrong. My apology.

Overall awards:

Single-Gender Division

GC: Norwell
1RU: Zionsville
2RU: Sullivan

Varsity Division

GC: Loveland
1RU: Whiteland
2RU: Norwell

Caption Awards

Outstanding Instrumental: Opelika
Outstanding Stage Crew (Gym): Marion (That was one I could barely hear)
Outstanding State Crew (Auditorium): Zionsville
Outstanding Female Soloist: Jasmine--Opelika (AMAZING!)
Outstanding Male Soloist: Mt. Zion (Couldn't hear name)

Order of Finalists:

Sullivan "Singers"
Zionsville "Royalaires"
Loveland "By Request"
Norwell "Knight Stars"
Mt. Zion "Swingsations"
Opelika "Ovations"
Troy "TBHS Express"

Everything got behind because of Brown County's technical problems. We should catch up with night show things though.

Saying that Single-Gender cannot compete with Mixed is a complete myth and bias opinion. A few examples...

2005--Southwestern

Going into Finals, Columbia City's Single-Gender was beating groups such as:
Edgewood, Anderson-Highland, Winfield, and their own mixed group.

Edgewood went on to win, but Columbia City's Single-Gender took 2nd place.

1999--Watseka

Grand Champion - Crete-Monee Faces with Best Vocals
1st Runner-up - Sullivan Singers with Best Choreography
2nd Runner-up - Crete-Monee Cavaliers
3rd Runner-up - DeKalb Classic Connection

I think they are just saying it's harder to make head-to-head comparisons between mixed and Single-Gender groups, not trying to say that Single-Gender groups can't be competitive with mixed groups.

Hmm... I like the idea of the Champion of Varsity getting an automatic berth in the Finals, but I just don't think Single-Gender choirs should EVER compete against Mixed show choirs. They just aren't the same animal and thus shouldn't compete against each other.

Such is life though. Only 5 Championship choirs making the Finals certainly tightens up that competition though. Can't wait to hear who made it.
