so only 6 varsity groups? so everyone is in finals wow i dont think i have ever been to a small comp like this, but i think i will it will still be great!! I really cant wait for this one!!

its really a matter of individualized judging (this many judges for vocals, this many for choreo, etc...) vs. combined judging (the same judges adjudicate everything)

This might be a silly question, but here it goes: In Indiana you have your choreography judges and vocal judges, when we attended the Watseka Invite last year there were 3 or 4 judges and they all judged on vocals AND choreography, so my question is In Iowa how does judging work?
I wish that more out of state groups could/would attend competitions in Iowa. However, I'm in full support of the all student band. I've heard the arguments that it's unfair for the whole show choir to suffer just because there is a lack of talented musicians at the school. That argument just doesn't hold water for me. That's like saying that it's unfair for your whole basketball team to suffer just because you don't have a big man. Lets change the rules to allow schools to pay a 6' 10" guy who played semi-pro to fill that spot.
Show choir is art and it is competitive, but it is above all educational. Students should be in the band learning what it's like to play this type of show. Show choir is one of the best ways for a student musician to learn how important it is to go out and repeat the same consistent performance day after day just like they would be expected to do if they were playing professionally for a Vegas show or a Broadway musical.
You get the talent you've got in your school. We'll all have ups and downs because of changes in the students and talent level in the group whether it's band members or singer/dancers.
I think the performer sharing rule should be waived when we're talking about mixed groups vs. Single-Gender groups. I don't think students should be in both the varsity and the prep group though.
Aside from that there aren't many rules unless they are imposed by the competition itself. We don't allow fog machines, confetti, or pyrotechnics at our competition because we've had problems with the big messes left by them putting the competition way behind schedule.
We don't limit the number of performers. We don't require you to use a certain set. We don't paint you into a certain performance area. We don't require you to sing a capella. We don't limit the length of your show (most do limit the total performance time, but if you can setup and tear down lightning quick your show can be 20 some minutes long).
I agree with this.... Obviously the rules aren't horrible because Iowa groups still compete in Iowa. They are just some silly rules, and while some are dumb, other's are reasonable.
I personally know of three groups this year that decided NOT to go back to Iowa because of all the excessive and (dare i say, stupid) rules. Wake up Iowa, thats the very thing that killed Showstoppers!!

Albeit competitive art, but you cant put too many rules in place and expect that every creative program can adhere to those. Art is creative, using the resources available to you. Period. Sure it would be great if every program across the country had unlimited resources of talented students and an abundance of student instrumentalists available only to the show choir, but we all know thats not a reality. Iowas attempt to overstructuralize the competitive aspect of the art form has perhaps gone to far. At the very least Iowa will eventually suffer from the lack of groups wanting to come to their competitions.

I hope someday some fresh blood slips into the IHSMA to change some of these goofy rules, until then... we Iowans are stuck and just have to live with it.

i guess becaus i live in iowa i never realized the difference of rules from all the other states. i can see how that would greatly affect wheather out of staters come or not. But i'm still so excited for the competition and east will be bringing all there groups and i'm sure we have good competition for all of them. GOOD LUCK to everyone competing!!!!!!!!

Um if your director is playing? Then I am not sure. In our case are combo has had the highest score at both Pleasant Hill and Troy Compitions but because one of our members is in college and the other is an adult we are never able to win. So If both are playing then maybe...
No the director does not play, but I wasn't sure if you were aloud to have an adult outside of your director.
