Your comment was totally uncalled for. Ethan was literally just trying to help. What makes you think you can talk down to people on SCC this way? Also, as you should know from being a SCC crew member, people who do not have accounts on this website cannot click on profiles to view what choir they’re from. So Ethan’s comment is helpful to those people. Thank you Ethan, and please don’t let this rude comment deter you from posting and continuing to make SCC a great community.
Well, that's their first problem! They should be getting accounts, logging in, and joining the discussion!
But to be real, I'd pump the brakes on saying Alex's comment was uncalled for. These are discussion boards after all. It's okay to reply to one another. Does Alex's comment have a little bit of a joke to it? Sure. Is it rude and demeaning? No. There wasn't any name calling, expletives, or personal attacks. Respectfully, no forum or discussion board on the internet would consider Alex's comment inappropriate. Would you rather have a comment like Alex's on SCC or the vitriol you see on anonymous show choir Twitter accounts?
As Crew members, Alex and I read most comments and stay up-to-date on most event pages as folks are constantly sharing schedules, judges, ticket prices, etc. So maybe you haven't noticed, Dominick, but Ethan has been posting a lot lately which certainly is not a bad thing. But a lot of your posts, Ethan, in the various event pages are the exact same question (usually along the lines of: "who's eligible for finals? how many finalists?") SCC is a literal database. Many times when folks ask a question - the answer is right in front of them. Someone asked in the Findlay FEst topic whether it was a gym or auditorium - the answer is already posted up above under "venue info." For those specific finalists questions Ethan has asked, one could scroll back to a competition's previous year by easily clicking the arrow buttons up by the event title to learn how many finalists they have taken in previous years. SCC is becoming a much easier website to navigate with continuous improvements (Thanks Haakon!) and many answers to questions are already at your fingertips. I mean, heck, Ethan isn't alone in this but many folks don't even consistently read the comments that already exist on an event page and instead ask for a livesteam link even though they literally just have to scroll down to see it's already posted.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with any of these questions, to be clear, there isn’t. They’re genuine questions with no ill-intent. SCC is an amazing database with SO many tools. Haakon and the Crew - we all work so hard voluntarily might I add as we all have real jobs or are in college, but we do this because we love the show choir community and want to make sure we have this information and are preserving this information. The least we can do is point out the tools, remind folks, and educate them on how to use SCC. We know our audience is constantly changing as folks graduate and new students join show choir. We truly get that. Folks always ask, "who's attending this comp?" And more often than not, you can actually take a look at the "Attending" box and certainly get some answers (which is what Alex did). Haakon recently added a new livestream box on event pages, because we know some folks don't read the comments and we want to make it easier. Altogether, while we absolutely welcome people to comment and ask questions and engage in the community, we also want to be clear that this information often times already exists on SCC and point them in the right direction to their answer. Yes. We are a community. Communities are supportive of one another and communities also challenge one another to grow and learn. So, yeah, Crew members may leave comments like Alex’s above making them aware of tools. Sometimes we may have sass. Sometimes we're just trying to have fun too. Conversely, any SCC user can at any time also provide feedback on SCC, our features, or whatever as Haakon is especially open to hearing what the community wants and needs. (Ex. The “Vs.” feature).
Ultimately, while on the Crew end we feel like users could sometimes do a better job *using* the features of the website, I know on our end *we* need to do a better job communicating how SCC actually works and what some of the behind-the-scenes work we do actually is. That last thought has been on my mind a lot recently and sums up my entire post pretty well. Which, disclaimer, my comment spiraled to be far less about Ethan or Alex and far more about general thoughts on the current state of SCC.
I think my issue here is that the "Attending" box doesn't necessarily tell you who is competing. When I was in high school, I frequently attended competitions my choir was not competing at, but would still mark that I was attending them on my profile. I don't think Alex's comment was uncalled for, but I do think it was less obvious than he made it out to be. I appreciate Ethan for double-checking that Center Grove was in fact competing, not just a few students making the trip as spectators!
Agreed, Sam. That's the inherent purpose of the Attending box - to see who's going and hopefully meet up and say hello #community.
It can also just be a tool to use prior to the actual competition schedule being released. For example, Franklin Central is also attending Pike. Wouldn't it be far more exciting to be talking about the Center Grove and Franklin Central showdown than this?
Rereading it all, I can see how it came off snarkier than I had originally intended. However, Ethan does post multiple times a day with one or two variations (on event pages he hasn’t even signed up for and his own choir isn’t attending) so it does get quite frustrating when the questions he’s asking aren’t helping or hurting anyone, just creating more clutter for us to sort through. Myself, and Jeff especially, regularly email event hosts, directors, etc., trying to get information to update on the site and it’s a little annoying when someone simply asks 150 times for the same information we’re actually seeking out through the source. I apologize for the confusion or misinterpretation to Ethan. Everyone else who was “offended” by the comment might need to just put themselves in our shoes
