Ron Hellems is an Instructor in the Department of Theatre and Dance, Musical Theatre Division at Ball State University. His assignments include Basic Musicianship, Sight-Singing, Music Theater Ensemble, Singing for Non-MTO’s, and Advanced Musical Theater Repertoire.
As an educator and administrator, Mr. Hellems served a twenty-three year tenure as Director of Vocal Music, and Chairman of the Performing Arts Department at Carmel High School, in Carmel, IN. While at Carmel High School, Mr. Hellems directed the school’s nationally known show choir THE AMBASSADORS, and administered a department of thirteen full-time staff members, and over 1500 performing arts students. As a director & choreographer, he produced and staged twenty-five Broadway musicals, countless concerts, musical revues, and show choir competition shows.
Mr. Hellems has devoted over three decades to the development, improvement, and promotion of Show Choir throughout the United States. As an educator, administrator, director, choreographer, adjudicator, and clinician, he has remained a respected leader in the field, and in demand as an independent consultant. In 1986, he joined forces with Keynote Arts Associates, and was the contest creator & co-founder, artistic director, and evaluation administrator for the SHOWSTOPPERS National Show Choir Competition. In addition, Ron has been a clinician at many show choir camps & clinics, including the American Choral Director’s Association national convention, and Show Choir Camps of America.
Following his teaching career, Mr. Hellems served as the President of Rivar’s, Inc. (1999-2009) an Indiana-based company, which provides high-quality performance apparel for high school and college music groups throughout the United States and Canada.
Ron earned both his Bachelors and Masters degrees in music education from Indiana State University, and is a member of Phi Delta Kappa, MENC, and The American Choral Director’s Association.
