There was a scoring error with final awards. As it turns out, Washington "Classic Connection" was the Grand Champion. Roosevelt notified Washington of the error today. It's been updated above.
Hi! I don't want this to sound rude at all because that isn't my intention, but what are some of the main reasons behind scoring errors? In my experiences, directors will count up points to make sure everything is correct after they are given their packets.
Well there's several different types of scoring errors. In general, it's math and math is hard. That's why Carmen Scoring and Palu Tabulations seem to be growing in popularity. If I ran a contest, I'd definitely use one of those (although scoring errors can still happen with systems like that though again generally user error). Aside from just adding the math wrong, sometimes it's not even a scoring error but rather an announcer's error. Basically Steve Harvey in show choir form. I imagine some scoring errors have also happened with different scoring systems like converting points to ranks and applying consensus correctly. Lastly, sometimes one individual judge's scores somehow get left out and aren't added into the total for whatever reason. Probably user or tech error. I believe that's what happened here - once they added that judge's scores in it changed the placement. However, I'm clearly not associated with SF Roosevelt so they can obviously do more than just speculate. And I'm sure there's various other examples of how scoring errors have manifested themselves at previous show choir competitions as well.
actually it has been decided that there will be a tie for grand champs! we discussed it in great detail today it was kinda crazy
(for those curious a judge changed his mind in the middle of printing the score sheets which are live documents so on one page gretna won and on another washington did-- also know this was okay with directors from both schools! it wasnt just random or anything haha)
