I purchased the livestream - it said you would have access for one week. I tried to open it this morning to see some of the groups I missed, and it says "Sorry, media is offline." Does anyone know how this is supposed to work? Thanks.

Dude. Don’t start rumors. That is 100% NOT TRUE. They have 1 adult (their accompanist). Every other band member is a student. Lot of dad crew has grey beards but they only carry heavy stuff.

This is not true at all! The only adult is the accompanist, all the rest are students. And they certainly deserved that award!!

Understood. Appreciate your willingness to own an honest mistake. If there was a professional band I totally agree they shouldn’t be eligible for best band award (and most competitions have this in their rules.) I, personally don’t think that professional bands should even be used. It should be a student activity. The music is part of the overall experience and therefore affects the score.

True dat. Every high school has a band. What’s so hard about having them join? Using a professional band is no better than using recorded music..

What so hard having them join is some programs are in farm towns with marching bands of 5 members. Our group would rather hire professionals, and forfeit a trophy so we have live music to sing & dance to.. It’s either this or receive straight 5’s for using a track. It’s a pick your poison situation at this point.

I don't comment much on here, but I am well-versed in this very topic. When I started directing at a school, the previous director didn't have a very amicable relationship with the instrumental director. That instrumental director actively tried to dissuade students from joining combo.

All this to say, sometimes it's not in the choral director/combo director's control as to whether they can recruit an all-student band. Sure, it's awesome to have one, and even more awesome if they score well. However, in these instances, you have to hire a professional band. Band scores are minuscule to vocal scores. (I meant that in the nicest way possible band!)

MZ not making finals is wild. Especially bc their visual and choreo is typically miles ahead of groups. Groups like cg fc John Burroughs. But everyone has an off day. I’ve experienced a season of missing 2 finals 3 in 3 years tho. All 3 shocking to us. Made. Is a closer choir

Very shocking to me . I’ve seen MZ live 3 times this year and always thought they were near the top. Judge’s thought different. Missed finals here and Chesterton and sixth at EPG. Maybe a different show to the judges way in back.

I watched from near the judges area. I'd have put them equal with Lafayette Jefferson, but maybe losing the tiebreaker to LFJ due to needing so long to set up their extensive set pieces and riser levels? Could it have been a time penalty?

I don't think that it's a lack of Mt Zion's abilities but moreso a testament to the other groups' abilities. I'm sure the preliminary scores were very close.
