Question for the group: How did Oak Mtn. Singers get two of the caption awards, Homewood got none, and yet Oak Mtn. placed third and Homewood second? I have never seen that before. Was there a unique way of scoring this comp?

If more points are available in the vocal category, and Homewood took more vocal points and the scores were close in other categories, it is possible.

Does that make sense?

I guess the top three groups were just SUPER close in points in the other areas then? Usually vocals only weigh 10% more than the visuals. It is just an incredibly unique scenario.

I'd agree that a good conclusion is that the top three were all very close and might be why it took a while for Auburn to do their awards presentation. Auburn very well may have gone over the numbers a couple times to ensure accuracy.

I'd also say, perhaps an unpopular opinion, but I'm not sure it's very helpful to have a 'Best Overall Show' caption (or at least to call it that). To me, the language of Best Overall Show coincides with Grand Champion. It strikes me as odd to say the third place choir had the Best Overall Show when two choirs scored ahead of them. I'm guessing that's Auburn's version of a Best Show Design or Best Overall Effect type of caption and that's what they're trying to communicate, but I think their language choice can cause confusion. It's sort of an ambiguous caption to the average audience member and bold language for what is probably a relatively small portion of the score sheet compared to music/visual.

It’s a Homewood thing. They’re typically really strong in everything, but there’s usually a group that’s better than them in one area. Oak Mountain is very strong in visuals, not so much in vocals. From what I’ve seen (which is half of Entrprise’s show and none of Homewood’s), Enterprise is really strong in vocals, not so much in visuals.

Here are some other examples of Homewood getting a good placement without getting any major captions.

Opelika 2013:
1. Homewood (OE)
2. Auburn (BV)
3. Jackson Prep
4. Enterprise (BC) (BB)

Petal 2015:
1. Wheaton South (BV)
2. Homewood
3. Oak Grove (BC)
4. South Jones (OE)
