o that is very confusing... thank you for the explanation though!

Ok this gets a little confusing. At Kennedy there are vocal and visual judges, but vocal judges all have a little visual and band section on their score sheet and visual judges score a little bit of vocals and band.

For vocals, you take all the vocal judges vocal scores (not visual or band) and rank them. You take the visual judges VOCAL scores and combine them. Those combined scores are then given a rank. You add that rank to the vocal judges ranks (which are not combined) and the group with the lowest rank total wins the caption. The same is true for visuals, you just switch that around.

Best vocals:

Linn-Mar got 1 1 1 1 from the vocal judges and the visual judges gave them 2 = 6
Xavier had 2 2 3 5 from vocal judges and 4 from visual = 16
Urbandale had 2 3 3 6 from vocal and 5 from visual = 19
Washington had 2 5 5 6 from vocal and 1 from visual = 19
IC West had 4 4 4 4 from vocal judges and 6 from visual = 22
Prairie had 3 5 6 6 from vocal judges and 3 from visual = 23

Linn-Mar clearly won best vocals. I have to admit best choreography gets even trickier.

The vocal judges combined visual scores (as given to directors) seem to be missing Kym Chambers Otto's visual scores. When added in it looks like the vocal judges ranked the groups in this order:

Prairie (144.5)
Urbandale (138.5)
Linn-Mar (138)
Xavier (135.5)
IC West (135)
Washington (131)

The only difference it makes on the provided score sheet is Xavier has an extra ranking point, as they were tied with Linn-Mar previously. This didn't effect caption placement at all. There was however a tie:

Best choreography:

IC West got 1 1 1 from visual judges and 5 from vocal judges = 8
Prairie got 2 2 3 from visual judges and 1 from vocal judges = 8
Urbandale got 3 4 4 from visual and 2 from vocal = 13
Xavier got 2 3 6 from visual and 4 from the vocal = 15 (was previous 14 with only 3 from vocal)
Linn-Mar got 4 5 5 from visual and 3 from vocal = 17
Washington got 3 5 6 from visual and 6 from vocal = 20

I'm not sure how the tie was broken for the caption. It was not directly specified on the sheet i have. Prairie received a higher visual score, 442 to 436. I assume it was because 4 of the 7 judges had IC West ahead, including all of the visual judges. I am not 100% certain though.

were best choreography/ vocals voted on by the judges? because point wise prairie won best choreography beating IC West according to 2 of 3 judges and only behind by half a point by the other.

this was quite the interesting competition

So I know this is really late, but last weekend was long, and I just didn't get to it during the week. Here were finals rankings:

Sullenberger (vocals):
1. Linn-Mar 160
2. Xavier 157.5
3. Urbandale 155.5
4. Prairie 153
5. IC West 152
6. Washington 148

Bostic (vocals):
1. Linn-Mar 162
2. Prairie 158
3. IC West 156.5
4. Washington 155
5. Xavier 151.5
6. Urbandale 151

Shanley (vocals):
1. Linn-Mar 171.5
2. Urbandale 169
3. Xavier 168
4. Prairie 164.5
5. Washington 160
6. IC West 158.5

Chambers Otto (vocals):
1. Linn-Mar 155.5
2. Urbandale 150
3. Xavier 145
4. IC West 142
5. Prairie 140.5
6. Washington 135.5

Gutierrez (visuals):
1. IC West 166.5
t-2. Xavier 166
t-2. Prairie 166
4. Linn-Mar 165.5
5. Washington 163.5
6. Urbandale 163

Johnson (visuals):
1. Prairie 150
2. IC West 149.5
3. Washington 148.5
t-4. Xavier 148
t-4. Linn-Mar 148
6. Urbandale 145.5

Legg (visuals):
1. Prairie 158
2. Linn-Mar 157.5
3. Urbandale 157
4. Washington 156.5
5. IC West 154.5
6. Xavier 152

Tiebreaker for 2RU was determined by placings
Linn-Mar 1 1 1 1 2 4 4 = 14
Prairie 1 1 2 2 4 4 5 = 19
IC West 1 2 3 4 5 5 6 = 26
Urbandale 2 2 3 3 6 6 6 = 28
Xavier 2 2 3 3 4 5 6 = 25
Washington 3 4 4 5 5 6 6 = 33

As you can see, this was a very close competition and all the judges had different thoughts on the shows. All the vocal judges had Linn-Mar in 1st, which is the reason they won. If you look, all of the separation came from the vocal judges- the visual judges scored all the groups very close to each other. Gutierrez had a gap of 3 points, Legg had the widest gap with only 6 points between the 6 groups. Comparably, the smallest gap from the vocal judges was 11 points and the largest gap was 20.

Judges were obviously divided on Urbandale, as they had three judges placed them 6th, yet they still ended up tied for 3rd with the 2nd most points. When talking about captions, some interesting things I noted were that the visual judges all placed Washington first in vocals (the vocal judges did not). And the vocals judges had IC West 5th in choreo a half a point out of 6th (visual judges had them all 1st). Clearly, very close and very divided. Everyone should be proud!

Thank you to all the groups and fans who attended Raise The Roof this past weekend. What an exciting competition! I knew with those six g reat groups in the open class, it was going to be a close one!

I'd like to clear up a misconception caused by a typo on my part. Our website inadvertently indicated that two judges would be judging different captions from day to night. I was not aware of the error until after the event was over. We did not make a last minute change in judging assignments...I just didn't realize that I screwed it up on the website. I will certainly monitor that copy much more closely in the future!

I hope those of you who were able to attend had a great time! Thank you for your patronage. We hope you'll join us again next February 28th for Raise The Roof 2015!

What a great competition!

Just a few thoughts on the top three groups for people who weren't there or haven't seen these groups:

Linn Mar gave an impressive finals performance. The vocals were just so incredibly mature and rich- there was no contest for best vocals in my opinion. They have some great variety in their show. And a killer band. The choreography is challenging and artistic… they truly came to win, it was clear. And they did. I know some people are saying what a surprise it was, but it was NO surprise to me. I can't wait to see this show again at Mo Show!

Its two years in a row now that Prairie has been presenting such a complete show choir package. Show design, props, costumes, creative arrangements, bangin choreo and vocals, solid band, and just tons of energy telling a light story that doesn’t drown out what we all come to see – good ole’ fashion dancing and singing. I'm super excited to see what the future holds with this group under the masterful direction of Justin Sands.

IC West is such a tight group of performers. They have such a warm sound and their choreography is extremely tight and lyric driven- hence the Best Choreography win. This group has energy for days. I truly could rant and rave for days about these kids- so heartfelt and entertaining performers to watch. It's been a joy working with them throughout the season.

Kennedy is a fun competition! I hope to come back again next year either to watch or with Muscatine!

You're going to Mo-Show??? I better see you in Ovation's warm-up with me then ;)

What a great day! All of the groups were absolutely phenomenal and should be proud. Any one of these groups could have won on Saturday.

In case anyone is curious, word on the street is that 10th Street won by double digits. I don't know if that is true, but thought others might be able to comment or confirm with more data. As a Linn-Mar supporter, I will tell you that the day show (while it was awesome as always) was not 10th Street's best performance but they absolutely nailed the finals. I only mention it because it sort of explains the jump up in place from the day results.

Thank you to Kennedy for hosting a great competition! Sadly, it was a great way to end our 2014 season! Our seniors will be truly missed! Anyways, congrats to Linn-Mar and all of the other groups that competed yesterday! Everybody was phenomenal and honestly I had no idea how finals were going to go with the tight race in prelims. I was so proud of our performance in finals because I believed that it was our best performance yet, and that's all I could ever ask for, not a trophy, but a great performance

Prairie also won Best Instrumentalist fyi, they forgot to award it at daytime awards.

And HOLY MOLY! Here's how much of a change there was in ranks from prelims to finals!

Linn-Mar (+3, from 4th)
Prairie (+1, from 3rd)
IC West (+4, from 6th)
Urbandale (-3, from 1st)
Xavier (-3, from 2nd)
Washington (-2, from 4th)

i kinda figured this was going to be a scoring mess with the judging switches in finals but there was just a lot of craziness happening all day. Congrats to Linn-Mar and DEFINITELY all the other groups who performed. No one predicted this outcome but the judging was crazy all day and we all killed it. awesome job

I may be incorrect but I heard they decided at last minute to NOT switch judges last night.

This competition was crazy... A ton of high caliber groups at the top of their game. I couldn't call it one way or the other. It could have come out many different ways.

Protege is setting up now...

And I literally have no idea how this is going to go, and no predictions it is so close. But I think linn-mar was most improved from day to finals

In step was probably the best prep group I've ever seen.

We here in the Urbandale bus feel great about our finals performance.

Btw Adam just have me on the show tomorrow if you wanna meet me! :p

I'm not saying they weren't great by any means, I just feel to have them ahead of groups such a a urbandale and prairie and their own varsity group is just... Idk. I feel it is a whole different level of shows. I promise to everyone that I mean No disrespect to In Step at all
