What a fun competition! It was a joy to see the groups come out so early in the season with great shows! I had it how it went except I did have Jefferson in first and IC high 2nd but it was very close and I think a personal preference in shows for me but it was very close.
I really have to say I loved how the competition was run, on time, effective and everyone was so nice which for many competitions is hard let alone a first time competition! And I can say I loved the format it was nice to be done with my day at 830 to go home.
I can't wait to see all these groups later on in the year to see the improvement on already solid shows
That seems about right... I know from what I was told it could have been confusion in the interpretation.... awesome job to everyone there yesterday.
This is kind of the case. Looking at the scoresheet now and here's what we have.
Raw scores after the day went:
Monona Grove & Iowa City High: 681
Cedar Rapids Jefferson: 675
When converted to ranks it went:
Iowa City High: 2, 2, 2, 2
Cedar Rapids Jefferson: 1, 1, 3, 3
Monona Grove: 1, 1, 4, 4
To break the tie they took the raw scores from the day, which had Iowa City High 6 points ahead of Cedar Rapids Jefferson. The band score was not used in breaking the tie.
As expected from the caption awards... The 2 vocal judges had Monona Grove in first and the two visual judges had Jefferson in first. Just goes to show that the most complete package won the day and everyone was awarded a caption for the area in which they excelled the most! Isn't that exactly how all competitions should end up?
What an amazing way for all of these groups to start the season! Prairie High School hosted an absolutely top notch competition! Even more amazing is that it was their first year hosting! It was such a wonderful mix of competition and education, hosted by wonderful volunteers in a jaw-dropping venue. I can't wait to watch this competition grow into THE place to start your competitive season!
They take raw scores and convert them to ranking which put Westside Delegation and 4th Avenue Jazz tied for Grand Champion, then they went to raw score total of Vocals and Choreography and they were still tied, so they added the band score and created a 4 pt difference between the two.
Congrats Prairie and Mr. Sands on a great first year event. Your clinicians where fantabulous!

Thanks for the explanation.
Not surprised then to see City take the win after those scenarios- their band in the last few years has been LEGIT.
Also interesting factoid, I heard two judges had Monona in 4th, and two had them in 1st.
Congrats to all groups on competing so early. Props also go out to Prairie- sitting there observing everything, no one would have EVER known this was your first competition!

I was very proud to host Thomas Jefferson High's "Ovation" durring Prairie Premiere, and all I can say is that I am a very proud host after that placing at today's competition! VERY VERY proud host today! Great job to all of the schools and thank you for making our school's first competition a successful one! See you all next year?
So the Grand Champion did not receive best vocals or best choreography? That seems very unusual!
Correct... Multiple ties occurred. I'm sure Mr. Sands would love to explain. He did before announcing the final two awards, I just was preoccupied with finding a clear route out of the school to pay attention.
Great! Their show was phenomenal. There were two boys doing flips in the closer and one of them messed up a few times (he's okay as far as I know) though. My favorite group of the day was Monona Grove though- they did a set themed around Where the Wild Things Are! So good!!!
Two boys got in a fist fight on stage during their closer. I hope both parties are okay.
Fortunately it was entirely staged. by the way I think that might be sitting behind you in the back right balcony!
