Be proud of what we all do. Go out wanting to achieve the greatest. BE the greatest. Maybe take a trophy home once in a while and enjoy your success.

The single most important part of our competitions. The road to excellence is paved by the desire to achieve greatness.

I am grateful, though, that people like Jamie Barrack make their opinions known. In addition to being proud of everyone's contribution to show choir, and celebrating the "best", we must support each other to higher levels of achievement.

It is said that " a rising tide lifts all boats", which I feel can be applied in this instance to the more experienced groups sharing their knowledge and passion with the younger, less established groups. I have seen show choirs like Amherst, Menchville, Powhatan, Poquoson, Kecoughtan, etc., push their personal envelopes and develop in skill and talent, because they go to competitions and watch "big" groups like Cosby, Manchester, Clover Hill, Hanover, Lee-Davis, etc. put on amazing, well-designed shows.

This constant improvement by all parties is fueled and enhanced by an atmosphere where creativity, innovation, and strong performances are honored, but there is a second component: camaraderie. As long as we are supportive of each other in our endeavors, sharing kind words between members and helping each other with knowledge and in times of need, then we are maintaining the positive momentum.

Thank you, Mr. Barrack, for speaking to the natural tendency to inflate ones head after achieving "greatness". Thank you, shapiroevents, for making the point that we work hard for those trophies, and we should be proud to earn one.

You are both right.

"See this trophy? It cost $12. This one? $16. And if you want to be Grand Champion? $22. It's not the trophy that matters, it's that you got to come here and perform in front of your peers, and you had a chance to share this experience here today." Thank you, Jamie Barrack. *not necessarily verbatim*

I understand that everyone could buy a trophy slap some small gold plaque on it with Champion engraved and call themselves Grand Champion. Please dont take this the wrong way but i believe that we COMPETE for a reason- to win! Otherwise we could call them exhibition festivals and simply smile at each other all day and that would be fine with me!

However,

We ALL spend countless hours in rehearsal, hundreds if not thousands of dollars, blood, sweat and tears to perfect shows that were created to compete against others. While the trophies do not matter and yes may only cost $22- they mean alot more than just the plastic that they are. They represent the hard work and dedication of a group of students who come together and accomplish something that not any joe-shmo off the street could accomplish. Be proud of what we all do. Go out wanting to achieve the greatest. BE the greatest. Maybe take a trophy home once in a while and enjoy your success.

P.S.-Congratulations to Hanover- I heard the festival was once again run very well and everyone I have spoken to had an amazing time. Congratulations to all choirs and participating schools. See you there next year!

I'm pretty sure Best Female Soloist in B was that girl from Patrick Henry. Soundsations, I believe.

I could be wrong about that though.

Bless to all the VA groups going out of state this weekend!! Break legs and have the time of your life!!! So glad you found some one to trade, cause I know my D.C.'s were not looking to re-blocking some 8 or so of their fellow students! Okay, time to finish these receipts for the good ol' tax return.

There are LOTS of competitions the same day and people are going elsewhere cause they want to "win". Martinsburg is the same day and has the smallest wing-span imaginable. Cosby will be at FAME Chicago (break legs yall!!!) and Chill will be in Indiana??? Someone correct me if im wrong.

I believe there is another competition. No, I have not had ANY luck switching...I have begged everyone. I have the best time slot, and literally...I can't give it away.

~Edit: Someone switched with me. Dear God, Thank you. Amen

I hear you there!! As it is we took an earlier time due to some of our students needing to get Charlottesville for the State One Act Competation!! I really wanted to go near to last in our division, but oh well.
Any luck with finding anyone to switch off times with? How is it there are so many "B" groups and not "A" groups? Is there another competition elsewhere at this same time?

MHSdirector on Mar 8, 2009, 9:46 PM

I think this comp is "Clash of the B Mixed Choirs"...there's a bunch!!! And only 4 A choirs...
