so, I'm from the group that does I Gotcha, and i can honestly say that i never once thought of that song as inappropriate until our first competition... when the critique judge told us that it was totally unacceptable, and even worse when adults from the audience were coming up to us kids and yelling at us. i completely understand that some may not like certain material, but when it comes down to it, just like you said, we did not pick the song or the choreography. i don't think it's right for ADULTS to yell at teenagers, making them cry, because of something we had no control over. like i said, none of us ever saw that song as anything so controversial.
we have to perform what we've been given. we can't change it now. people may not agree with what we're doing up there on stage, but appreciate it. know that just like other choirs, we've put hours upon hours into our show.. if you're not gonna appreciate what we do, at least apreciate how we do it.

Well, I will admit I thought it was a bit racy, but I do think any comments about song choice should definitely be directed toward your teacher, not the students. I have taken a lot of flack from judges about some of my song choices this year (for completely different reasons), and I would find it inappropriate to have these comments directed at anyone other than myself.
I would not go as far as to say it was "totally unacceptable", because I didn't feel that way about it. I also think it was inappropriate for audience members to come up to members of the show choir...but that's just me. I would be very disappointed in one of my kids if they did something like that. I do commend you for the execution of the number. It lives up to the Atlee tradition I have come to know and admire in you. I also acknowledge that I am a little...okay, a lot, on the conservative side. It was, IMO, a little racy. Not unacceptable or controversial. But like I said, it's just my opinion.
I love Atlee. I wish you the best of luck the rest of the season, and hope comments are kept to being constructive, and are directed at the people they are meant for. (Sorry about the preposition at the end of that sentence.)
show choir across the country is getting more modern and because of that, the costumes have to also. Look how people dress these days. Private parts definitley should be covered, don't get me wrong, but the costumes should be appropriate for the material. True some material can be a little racy for highschool... even though we know what really goes down on those buses... bad kids, bad! I heard about a certain Liza number ("I gotcha" which I LOVE) that was a little saucy last weekend and stirred some controversey, but I'm glad the group made the top 3. It's unfair to judge against a choir for a song selection picked by their show designer, choreographer or director. So, the lyrics are kinda raunchy and maybe it wasn't the best selection, but if the director and the students are comfortable with it... so be it. I get in little arguments when I want a song in a show and the director thinks it's too dirty, but then I just change the lyrics... Same tune, different words, The audience won't know and the judges that do will love that you spent the time to make it appropriate.

Yes there are divisions at Hanover. Thank God! I'm glad the show choir world has begun dividing the big from the smaller show choirs. While I love my smaller show choir, we will never be as impressive as a big choir, no matter how great we become. We're okay with this, and we like competing with other choirs like ourselves. I like that in the end, Grand Champion does allow a smaller show choir to shine, should that ever be the case.
I love Thomas Dale, as always.
Cobsy was also magnificent. When I first saw Cosby on the screen outside, I thought the were Thomas Dale. Then I knew the whole small choir category was in trouble.
Hanover was the bomb.
I want to steal Lee-Davis' uniforms.
Clover Hill was probably great, but I think we were asleep. That's what happens when you're second in the morning and the competition is an hour behind.
And lastly, maybe this is just me...but do shows seem to be getting more, well...racy? Some of these costumes are kind of sparse, and some choreography I saw was really suggestive. It made me go over my show with a fine tooth comb to make sure my students weren't doing anything that came across that way. I'm not even old...I'm in my 20's still. Is it just me? (For the record, we have a girl wearing a majorette costume at the end of our show, and I even feel weird about that, honestly)
I wish all the choirs the best of luck this weekend. We're going for 2nd place in the small category. We'll go ahead an concede 1st to Cobsy.

Thanks SOO much for all the compliments about Cosby ...it really means a lot to us in our first year!!! We cant wait to see everyone again this weekend and at Hanover and Kecoughtan!
First of all, I'm a big Thomas Dale fan. I like their vocals. I actually loved their closer...I was wondering how they were going to pull that off, but I think they really did sell it.
Anyway we could get Cosby to move to the big show choir division? I agree, they were amazing! We're hoping to give Amherst a run for their money this weekend. We got fantastic feedback and ideas to improve our show, and that's what we hope to do!

yall should be proud. it's very very hard going early no matter how good you are. yall definately made improvements from last year. it's just tough to get recognition around here. it takes a few consistant years in a row. yall will be fine.
