States was awesome this year, the best I've seen in a while, so many good choirs. Big congrats again to my alma mater on their second straight State Championship...but you know what really sucks? Since 1996, there has only been one class that DIDN'T win a state championship...and that was the class of 2003...my year...boo

i had a terrific time at states...it was well run and everyone was respectful and courtious of the groups outside of the gym...i'v heard that every choir there did a good job...i ordered the entire day on dvd and i'm anxiously awaiting its arrival...does anyone have thoughts on poca's show?
I also noticed the sound techs messing with the sound during the day. Very different sound in the morning and afternoon. Also noticed a couple choirs that had someone standing behind the sound guy and looking like they were giving pointers, because they would say something then the sound guy would change settings. NEVER saw that before. I don't think that it would have changed the standings but it shouldn't happen.

This might have been to tell the sound techs when to turn on the Mics, I know that happens alot where they dont have the mic on untill after the kid starts singing.
wow thats kinda dangerous lol...GREAT day of show choir action from everyone...great competition and well run...thank you hurricane on a job well done...i'm ordering the whole day from Just Perfect and am extremely anxious to see it because i saw (literally) no choirs saturday except i saw hurricane briefly in the commons...but this competition holds a special place in my heart
I meet alot of nice people at states yesterday. I love JOhn-john horn LOl is rocks. And i would like to thank Hurricane for being wonderful hosts. An i would like to thank the Mother from Winflied who spoke and me about my performance and our show I would like to say thank-you , what you said to me means more then you could ever imagine.

Who was the mom who spoke to you about your performance? You didn't say anything about getting to meet me! LOL
I was really surprised at how good you guys were since you said you hadn't been to many competitions this year. I know there have been comments about how it wasn't really show choir, but neither is Sissonville's show this year. *edit* They weren't at States, but I saw their show at the Kanawha County Swing Sing and at Poca's MusicFest. It was still entertaining, it's just not what the judges are looking for I guess. I was a little disturbed about the cap gun. I didn't think guns (even toys) were allowed on school property. I was glad to get to meet you, though, and I thought your group did a good job.

I will post my opinion now, mostly because it's expected. To Haught: Chris is upset that he didn't get to talk to you & he said "I'm broke & need money. Hire me to do something in the fall!" He'll be at Marshall, so it won't be that difficult. And it looked kinda funny seeing Mrs. Kincaid taking extensive notes in her program before her son son showed up (her son is Poca's director...hi Joey, I still can't call you Mr. Kincaid) Anyway, on to my opinions:
Winfield: Great show! Energy was really good for that early in the day. I hope you heard Chris screaming, he was so excited to see you guys (don't tell him I said that, he might deny it). Chris did think it was good & went on for a VERY long time on how good the guys sounded. Considering this was the first competition he's been to since States '03 he was pumped. Anyway, I thought you guys did great. Congrats on the placement & on a superior rating. I saw Haught right after awards & he looked exceptionally happy.
Martinsburg: Really good show. I saw you at Teays Valley & this was much better. I love your choreography & costumes. I hate the song "The Attitude Dance" as it's been stuck in my head since you sang it on Saturday, but oh well. The soloist in your ballad is incredible. I heard your director saying that was one of your best shows this year & it really was a good show.
Hoover: Much-improved, very good vocals. I love your song choices & thank the Lord that the poor guy that does the "Run, Freedom Run" solo FINALLY got to sing it without a mic or cold problem. Some of those notes he hit were quite impressive.
Morgantown: Unusual show...more a production than a show choir show. Not my favorite, but performed quite well. VERY loud at times.
Poca: Good show, I love the costumes and the songs. The ending is hilarious.
St. Albans: I've been hearing about you guys for months...and your vocals are good. I don't understand the point of the tiaras at the beginning, really I don't. The girls all looked like "Princess Barbie" or something. The first half of the show was incredibly David Legg-esque...it was a time warp to Poca as directed by David Legg. The second half I liked much better. Your band was too loud, sorry, just a fact. Amazing ballad, I was impressed. Nice quartet, but again, the band was too loud. I, unlike most people, hated the last costumes. But overall good show.
Hurricane: Amazing. Just amazing. You all had everything going for you & deserved the GC completely for this comp. In the past there have been some snobby Red Hot people who just assumed they would win...I appreciated the fact that as you won each award not only were you excited, but surprised. The energy was incredible. I love this show...the song choices, the choreo. (by the way, I looked back at Deana when you won best choreo. & she was freaking out), the costumes, especially the quartet. I'm not a fan of tap dancing, but at least you didn't do the same moves you've been doing since 1999. I love watching Ross perform...congrats on your award. I wish Chris could've stayed & seen you all, but he had to leave.
I'm very happy with the outcome of this years States. I believe that most of the awards were well-deserved. I'm sure you'll see me around next year.
Hey WV--Thanks for a very enjoyable day. The choirs were so enjoyable this year and I'm really glad I got up early enough to make the 3 hour drive to catch Winfield.
Hurricane-Got to agree with everyone. The hands down winner of the day. Great job.
Winfield and Poca--I had you two duking it out for second and third. Both choirs did a great job and were pretty even. Thought it would go either way.
St. Albans--Good job but I felt you were fourth. Vocals were good on the opener but went a little flat after that. And I, personally, don't like the whole "talk/sing" thing in the finale, but you performed your show well.
Martinsburg--Good job, I haven't seen you in a couple years and you did well.
Morgantown--I had never seen you before ever so I was looking forward to you. You performed a great show but it wasn't very show "choir"--very theatrical. Amazing soloists, but every song was a solo. What little choral singing you had got drowned out but a VERY good but VERY overpowering band. Choreography was good also, but it wasn't a show choir show. Actually told my friends that I would love to see you put on a production of the whole Copacabana show cause it would be great theater but knew the style would kill you with the judges. It's the whole Apples and Oranges thing. You would do great in a musical theater type competition but you're not really a show choir. I loved watching your performance though.

Overall, I thought the top 5 choirs were rewarded, I just would have changed the order slightly.
And we are proud of you, Michael. You have done an awesome job!!! It won't be the same without you! Please continue to post on here so I can keep in touch with you. I am so proud also that you were accepted into the music dept. at WVU!!!!
Was it Teays Valley where the kids couldn't hear the MC's decision?

yeah it was Teays Valley. I hope to get to go to some competitions next year...but who knows
we do indeed do both choices...and the weird thing is we only had one mess up all year where the choir didn't know which one to do. I'm kinda sad that competing is over for me, but I'm also proud of all the thing that we've been able to accomplish in my 4 years in the group.

Hi, forever friend. I know you are reading in this forum right now cause your name is at the bottom. It was at least when I started typing this post.
I was going to mention the microphone situation, because I was in the gym during the lunch hour and they were making repairs to the lights and sound. My guess for the reason the house lights were on during Winfield's show was the fact that no spot lights were on the areas where the mike stands were. They adjusted that for the afternoon shows. The sound was much better through the speakers in the afternoon as well.
I have one tiny question that I will probably get in trouble for asking, but I'm so curious to find out I just have to ask. If anyone knows, then please answer in a nice way, cause the question is asked in a nice way. Anyone who knows me, knows that I am not a mean person! " border="0" alt="innocent.gif" />
Was the time clock stopped when Hurricane was being announced?
I also get sad when people say they miss "the old show choir" about any choir. These kids are all new faces in the choirs they are in. How discouraging for them. No one should expect the same sound out of different kids. Maybe their voices can be developed into a similar sound, but it will never be exact. These are new people and my applause goes out to any choir member who puts everything they have into their performance. We all know how much time and energy not to mention dedication goes into being a part of a show choir. My hat goes off to each and every one of you!!!! " border="0" alt="thumbsup.gif" />
Thanks for all of your compliments to Winfield's show. There really is a choice. We've performed a totally different show in finals than in prelims at many comps because the audience really does want to see both choices. It's amazing how our kids have learned two different versions of the show. All of you in GA, I am proud of you!!!
