As for my thoughts on this competition, I will say this:
I'm glad we went and competed. It was a truly memorable experience, and there were so many supportive and friendly people at the competition. We put forth our greatest performance to date, and I truly enjoyed the experience.

The SCRS has problems. That is a fact. The problem is that everyone wants to know where exactly they are ranked in the nation...and sure it would be awesome to know but it is impossible. Each weekend groups go up against better or worse competition...a different panel of judges that may or may not be biased. No show is ever the same as the week before. Sometimes a choir gets a penalty for time or other reasons but does that mean that they are worse. The website says "Points for Placements 45% Difficulty 35% Expert Poll 15% YouRank Poll 5%" How do you determine difficulty? Who are the "experts?"...in order to be an expert to place groups you would have to see each group perform on a weekly basis in order for it to be completely "fair" and thats without bias opinions lol It would be awesome to have a ranking system but the closest thing we would get to a national ranking system would be one large nationals competition...and thats if everyone went lol

I'm sure a different system that had more backing by those of us who bash the SCRS would catch on with uninformed people/newspapers/et cetera. There just isn't one yet. (Not necessarily saying that there should be.)
I think the point is that unless such a system can eliminate subjectivity, I don't think it should even exist at all. Being that show choir judging is partially subjective in itself, that probably isn't even possible. Just because we "can" make a rating system doesn't mean we should.

Was that you sitting across from the girl that leaned in to tell them that it was total crap? If it was, I was the guy sitting there in the hat and the black shirt LoL I hope I'm right and won't look like a total idiot haha

As inaccurate as the SCRS may be, it remains the only "major" (that term being used loosely) ranking system of show choir on a national scale.

I'm sure a different system that had more backing by those of us who bash the SCRS would catch on with uninformed people/newspapers/et cetera. There just isn't one yet. (Not necessarily saying that there should be.)

I personally don't understand why people get so worked up over the show choir rating system. I think the BCS is a total joke, but I can guarantee you I'm not going to insert myself into some random stranger's conversation in a cafeteria just to try to "educate" them and convert them to my point of view.

Why? Because in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter...

Why all the anger show choir people? Why?

They posed the question of how the rankings are determined and all fell silent. I brought up the fact that no one can answer that question because SCRS refuses to release how they compute their numbers.

At least with the BCS, a pretty awful system itself, the process is transparent and everyone can critique individual points and thoeretically present a better avenue of determining the rankings.

I think the biggest point is that yes, most people that frequent SCC understand that SCRS doesn't present much value. But when other people are bringing those rankings to competitions to see who they have to beat, and when newspapers (!) are quoting SCRS to show how well their local choir is doing, we have a problem.

SCRS has become a voice of our medium though none of us asked or wanted it to be such.

Wow wow wow what a day!!! Clinton deserved the win....but its hard to judge some of these choirs because JB has a completely different style than most choirs Indiana is used to....It was a fun day I really had a BLAST

Hey man. I think I know the people you are talking about. They did it with me and my mom. They didn't know bro. They are into the world of chow choir, but they have no clue about how the system is and they thought it was real. If the people you are referring to is an older guy in a white EEE shirt and his older wife, then we are on the same page. Give them a break man. How were they supposed to know?

I know the deep amount of BS in that system, but I humored them LoL They were 19th by the way, so it wasn't like they were like "we're the best!!"

BTW tscott I really liked John Burroughs ballad. It was the most light hearted ballad I've heard in a while but it was still really awesome!!!

I was eating lunch, and next to me, some people from EEE pulled out a print-out of the terrible scrsystem and started conversing about it. I left them alone, hoping they would talk about how awful it was. They started asking about how the system was put together and I just couldn't stay silent. I very forcefully noted how the system refuses to release it's criteria and just generally talked about what complete bunk it was.

It just angers me that a. people that don't know any better take it seriously, and b. the people running it still put it out, knowing that it has no merit.

If there's ever been a finals at a competition as tight from top to bottom as this one I'll eat my hat...

I couldn't be more proud of our kids and their performances; Powerhouse, Sound Sensations and solo competitors equally. Why do we conduct our ballad? So it can always be as fresh and new as it was Saturday night. You more than delivered everything asked of you for the entire show.

Congratulations to Clinton on the win. No choir anywhere is more poised and polished.

BIG shout out to Center Grove. As a rule I am not a fan of comedy numbers, but I laughed out loud at both of yours; and your ballad was simply exquisite. I could easily have seen you taking the win.

Other highlights for me were Eisenhower's opening quartet, Marysville's ballad and LC's show concept. Your presentation of "West Side Story" was fresh and inventive and neither too "show choir-ized" nor "too musical theater." BRAVO!

wow really?? I freaking hate that system!! It was cool like the first time they made it but it doesn't provide a real comparison for groups because most people don't even compete against each other but are high up on those lists. I would have snatched it up and rip it up lol

Tyler's winning solo from the solo competition was terrific. I do not think I would be out of line to say he has a future in Broadway if that is his wish. Great job.

The femal soloist winner (sorry I don't remember her name) was also outstanding. I did not recognize the song but she delivered it incredibly well with a good amount of emotion. What a way to start off finals!

Congrats to all of the groups. A VERY entertaining day!

Tyler was freaking amazing!!! I wanted to meet him soo bad after his performance. I hope to see him singing in the future.

The female soloists name was Regan Goins and she is always such an amazing performer!! Love her!!

this was likely my last competition i'll attend this year, so a few notes before i regress back to lurker status:

1) a point was made earlier about clinton "holding back" in prelims at fairfield. the counterpoint that such a notion was preposterous and every performance must be treated like the last one.

let me put it to all of you this way: when lebron & the cavs (best record in the nba currently) play the nets (currently the worst record), there's a tendency to do just enough to win, simply because the cavs know that they do not have to bring their "A" game to succeed. lebron knows that in the 4th quarter, if the game is close, he can "turn it on" and put the thing out of reach.

now, i am not at all inferring that the top groups in the country do the bare minimum in order to get into finals. but, as some of my counterparts have stated earlier, there is some benefit to doing a solid -- if not spectacular -- show in prelims, then blowing the house down in finals. those of us in the midwest know that an entire day at a competition can be a draining one, especially for those who wake up in the wee hours just to get to the venue. performing two shows full out 7-8 hours apart after being awake for 20 hrs might be too much to ask from a high school group. the more seasoned groups can pace themselves & are able to save the goods for the evening performances.

but most groups don't have the luxury to just "turn it on" for finals. that takes a seasoned group with able leadership, which is exactly what clinton is. the majority of groups out there instead should strive to be better each time they go on stage. learn how to be good, then great, then the best... one show at at time.

2) every year that goes by, we see show choir as a genre grow. show choir is now "mainstream", with shows like GLEE sparking interest in the masses in an art form that has been around for decades. i find it somewhat appalling that a group would be perceived as "trying to be too artistic." folks, this is exactly what we want to be striving for as musicians & artists. to this point, while i absolutely love center grove, there are umpteen different groups out there doing the same style of show & a vast majority of them can't hold a candle to the way sound system does it. it's a tired show format that should only be done if it can be done near perfection.

(as an aside, center grove's ballad this year is near flawless. absolutely stunning.)

yes, burroughs' show may not speak to the masses, but it makes you think as an audience member. i'd much rather feel like i'm watching a show than watching a show choir. maybe that's a personal preference, but i think it's more of a challenge to pull that type of show off & instead of thinking about blend/balance & execution of choreography, i just sit back & enjoy.

3) the point spread at fairfield is somewhat useless as raw scores were converted to a weighted actual. i had a massive post that lost its way in the meltdown, but anytime you can try to take judges bias out of the formula is a win. if you are reading this & you use some sort of "olympic" or ordinal system at your contest, please -- and i mean PLEASE -- do away with it.

i've seen olympic scoring render an entire judge's night useless, simply because the definition of 10.0 being perfect was actually upheld -- none of that judge's scores were even used in determining the outcome because they were categorically lower than the rest of the panel... might as well have paid a monkey to come in and circle numbers.

ordinals is absolutely the worst system imaginable... personal preference written all over it. let's keep some semblance of objectivity in our competitions.
