Finals!

I have Powerhouse from the finals too but as you know, if you watched it, the audio was out. So, it's just the video without sound. Therefore, I didn't upload it.

It'd still be cool to see how it turned out on video

I felt so bad for her and the guy that tripped over her hand.
It was really well recovered. I had to ask someone if that was intentional.

I'm probably wrong, but I didn't see the soloist fall down in Part 2. That would make me think that this is Finals.

You can obsess over scores and rankings and 'bias' for months. Or you can enjoy the experience you had. I had an extreme blast this weekend and learned a lot! I am inspired. Thank you to Fairfield for one of the most well-run, FUN competitions I've ever been to. :D

The problem is that uniformed people treat it as such.

Who? Soldiers? Marines? Police Officers? It may well be that uninformed people treat it that way, but not our men and women in uniform.

This competition was a blast. It was one of those that did not matter what place we got because of the way each and everyone of us performed our hearts on stage and it was the best thing that has happend in my show choir life. The atmosphere of the Arena was different than what i expected and it was an experience of a lifetime.

Thank you to the Fairfield students and for being sooooo nice and accommodating. I wouldn't have asked for a better school to host us.

Attache was once again AMAZING and FLAWLESS with their performance. I congratulate them on their win and am very happy at that end of the night. i didn't get to see finals but their prelims performance was just completely perfect in my eyes. I have one more year til' my show choir life is over and i would like to compete against Attache once again. ;) You guys are the classiest choir students i have ever met.

You guys absolutely floored the audience, in the best possible way of course. There was an older couple sitting in front of me that had never been to a show choir competition and didn't even know what show choir was. After you guys performed in Prelims, he turned around and said one word: Wow. That was it. He wasn't a quiet guy by any stretch of the imagination, but he was literally speechless. As was the rest of the crowd. We east-coasters aren't used to seeing something that breathtakingly theatrical. We had about 12 members out of 44 attend the competition, and we were all completely blown away by your performance. Hopefully this theatrical trend will start here on the east coast, but in the meantime, please come back next year! Hey, we might even be there this year. We won't beat you guys of course, but to compete with you guys might be even better than seeing you live. Thank you for giving two absolutely mind-blowing performances.

Does anybody know how many students are enrolled at both Clinton and Burroughs? Or how many students are in their choral programs?

I didn't know students could be enrolled "at both Clinton and Burroughs"... Would kids spend half the day in California, and half in Mississippi? Or maybe they just split the year in half?

Burroughs: nearly 3,000 students at the school. In our VMA, around 200.
Clinton: I heard it was 1,000 students at the school, correct me if I'm wrong.

this was likely my last competition i'll attend this year, so a few notes before i regress back to lurker status:

1) a point was made earlier about clinton "holding back" in prelims at fairfield. the counterpoint that such a notion was preposterous and every performance must be treated like the last one.

let me put it to all of you this way: when lebron & the cavs (best record in the nba currently) play the nets (currently the worst record), there's a tendency to do just enough to win, simply because the cavs know that they do not have to bring their "A" game to succeed. lebron knows that in the 4th quarter, if the game is close, he can "turn it on" and put the thing out of reach.

now, i am not at all inferring that the top groups in the country do the bare minimum in order to get into finals. but, as some of my counterparts have stated earlier, there is some benefit to doing a solid -- if not spectacular -- show in prelims, then blowing the house down in finals. those of us in the midwest know that an entire day at a competition can be a draining one, especially for those who wake up in the wee hours just to get to the venue. performing two shows full out 7-8 hours apart after being awake for 20 hrs might be too much to ask from a high school group. the more seasoned groups can pace themselves & are able to save the goods for the evening performances.

but most groups don't have the luxury to just "turn it on" for finals. that takes a seasoned group with able leadership, which is exactly what clinton is. the majority of groups out there instead should strive to be better each time they go on stage. learn how to be good, then great, then the best... one show at at time.

2) every year that goes by, we see show choir as a genre grow. show choir is now "mainstream", with shows like GLEE sparking interest in the masses in an art form that has been around for decades. i find it somewhat appalling that a group would be perceived as "trying to be too artistic." folks, this is exactly what we want to be striving for as musicians & artists. to this point, while i absolutely love center grove, there are umpteen different groups out there doing the same style of show & a vast majority of them can't hold a candle to the way sound system does it. it's a tired show format that should only be done if it can be done near perfection.

(as an aside, center grove's ballad this year is near flawless. absolutely stunning.)

yes, burroughs' show may not speak to the masses, but it makes you think as an audience member. i'd much rather feel like i'm watching a show than watching a show choir. maybe that's a personal preference, but i think it's more of a challenge to pull that type of show off & instead of thinking about blend/balance & execution of choreography, i just sit back & enjoy.

3) the point spread at fairfield is somewhat useless as raw scores were converted to a weighted actual. i had a massive post that lost its way in the meltdown, but anytime you can try to take judges bias out of the formula is a win. if you are reading this & you use some sort of "olympic" or ordinal system at your contest, please -- and i mean PLEASE -- do away with it.

i've seen olympic scoring render an entire judge's night useless, simply because the definition of 10.0 being perfect was actually upheld -- none of that judge's scores were even used in determining the outcome because they were categorically lower than the rest of the panel... might as well have paid a monkey to come in and circle numbers.

ordinals is absolutely the worst system imaginable... personal preference written all over it. let's keep some semblance of objectivity in our competitions.


If you'd rather feel like you are watching a show than a show choir, go to a show, not a show choir performance. There are competitions for those wishing to do musical theater productions. Show choir competitions are for show choir performances, not musical theater.
