First, just so we're all clear... I don't consider Gary unqualified at all- we are judged by him every year, we hire him to judge our competition pretty much every year, and I think as a program, we have a lot of respect for him and his department at UW-EC.

I'm not entirely sure if that was directed towards me, but if it was, I did not mean to imply that Company now all of a sudden didn't like Doc or thought him to be unfit to judge competitions, I was merely commenting on some of the previous statements. I know only a little bit of the relationship between Doc and Mr. Voss, yet I can't immagine this being anything between the two of them, or between Doc and TG overall. I'm sure he gave us unfavorable scores last year, and yet he's back again to judge Spectacular, clearly that shows some level of a relationship between the two parties.

And if that wasn't directed towards me, but rather a general statement, then... oops?

I AM irritated at the 5th place... but I would be irritated at the POPE if he had put us in fifth. As I said earlier, I still feel strongly he is a qualified judge. I just respectfully disagree! It happens!
Second, I have to say that I take issue with this judging philosophy- I have no insight into Dr. Schwartzhoff's specific show choir judging philosophy, so I have no idea if Gary (or anyone) follows it. I believe that judges are hired to score the shows put in front of them THAT day- not on what they see as compared to what they saw last weekend, last month, or in November. It doesn't make sense to bring any other performances into play.

Dr. Schwartzhoff is all over the place because I think he not only expects a group to be good but also to get better. If your group just flatlines, he marks you becuase he thinks everything should get better as the year goes on.

As a former member of Company of Singers and a current member two choirs under Dr. Gary "Doc" Schwartzhoff (UWEC's Concert Choir and Singing Statesmen), I felt compelled to speak up about the issue regarding Doc's scoring. Now, I'm naturally going to be a bit conflicted when I see something like the scores posted, but I'll keep my personal assertations simple: Do I think that Company deserved better than 5th vocally (if that IS what the actual score was, there seems to be some discrepancy with the sheets)? Absolutely I do. Do I think Doc is someone unfit to judge show choir? Absolutely not. I emplore someone to give examples form his past choreography judging record in which he has shown special deviation from the accepted concensus of scoring form the other judges. And I'm not going to sit here and even entertain the fact that he gives inapropriate scores for vocals. Having worked with him on a daily basis, I can assure you the man knows vocal music. One does not attain the position of Director of Choral Activites at the (albeit, self) proclaimed "Wisconsin's Singing University". I have great respect for him, and thoroughly enjoy working with him. However, if he (or anyone else) asked me where I would've placed CoS instead, I'd say at least second because I thought they deserved it. At least they should've earned better than 5th to my ears. But I have no idea how I judge vocals compared to how he does it, but obviously there's a distinct difference. And to be honest, he's been at it for many more years than I have, so there's no discrepancy other than a difference in taste. Just as I'm sure he doesn't listen to Weird Al or Pink Floyd as much as I do, although the thought it highly entertaining...

And of course I've got a biased opinon, that always goes without saying, so take what I said for what you want and leave what you don't.

I agree--Being someone who gets to see the UWEC Choirs a lot---Gary Schwartzhoff is more than qualified. And he DOESN'T give us any better grade than anyone else. Dr. Schwartzhoff is all over the place because I think he not only expects a group to be good but also to get better. If your group just flatlines, he marks you becuase he thinks everything should get better as the year goes on.

It was originally recorded by a Christian group called Point of Grace I believe. A lot of the harmonies from that version and the arrangement we had sound very similar. I love the original version so much.

oh i keep watching your video of it on Youtube....simply amazing!! i love it!! ahhh...thanks for the help

Doc Schwartzhoff is amazing. I'm petrified that so many people are bashing him. Have you seen the choirs he directs at UWEC? Go to a concert, and I'm certain that you will think twice about that. Some people may not like his judging, but that does not discredit everything else that he does. And we must remember that judges have a hard job-they're trying to be honest and objective at the same time. Sometimes they do a better job than others. I have to agree that it's a bit odd that he had CoS in 5th, but if that's the way he saw it, then I commend him for his integrity.

Go to UWEC on April 15 or May 4 to see a few of the choirs. You'll be blown away, I guarantee you.

And no, I'm not a student at UWEC-I just happen to know how great he is

I think what Alex is "getting at" is that he finds it interesting that Gary's order for finals was different from most of the other orders. That's all.

He wasn't a competitor at Hastings, and I have no idea if he was there or not, but he doesn't seem to be making any sort of comment on what he thought of the actual groups- just that it's interesting to see the difference in order from the other judges.

I could be wrong, but those are just my thoughts.

certainly not. it does however make a difference if you know the nature of the beast. and to Wiscshow choirwhatever, you're right if they stuck with straight points, he didnt have much of an impact at all, however, its still interesting that he had them so ahead of the other judges regardless of point spread.

Jimmy is right, he runs cabaret once a year. (3-4 nights in a two week span) A 2 hour long show where it's singing and dancing medleys with short breaks of jokes/solo acts. It's a LOT like show choir, choreographed by other students, while he runs rehearsels.

It was interesting to see he had us behind the other judges last year, but I didn't complain about it then. I was really looking forward to beating Bemidji for the first time, which we were 1 rank away from. So.. I still don't know what you're getting at here.

NOTE: On the score sheets, the totals for each category are different than what's posted. There was some rounding or something, but adding straight judges scores (given on the final score sheet) across, you come up with these numbers, which did NOT affect the out come.

Gosh, these are confusing when looking at the score sheet.

It is really somewhat confusing to just decipher what you're looking at, even when some kind person lays it out so easily in black and white. It is also somewhat confusing how the judges have such a wide variety in scores. For example, what would Gary Scwartzhoff and Andrew Cao say to each other about TG's vocals? (one with 5th place, the other with 1st place) I don't know.

Anyway, all I can say is, I love Andrew Cao! He rules! "Is nice..."

QUOTE(ana @ Feb 14 2007, 11:04 AM) 383908
Now, keep in mind that T-G got a 5th from him ( among a 1st, and three 2nds). His scores did not have a huge impact, but most judges with experience keep track of their scores to get the final order they want- so I don't think the order he had was a mistake.

So, even knowing he had us placed where he did, I still feel strongly he is a qualified judge.

Dr. Schwartzhoff has been judging for years, and does work at UW-Eau Claire that could be called show choir. I don't know if he has taught high school show choir, but here is his extensive bio listing some of what he HAS done: Gary Schwartzhoff

As you can see, he's very knowledgeable and experienced. We have been judged by people who have nothing more than a high school degree, vague bio, and a bad reputation. Even though I disagree with his finals order (duh, I'm biased!), I would much rather it came from him.
Anyway, Isn't anyone else bothered by the fact that the scores all add up to different amounts??? It's making me CRAZY.

Yeah, I agree. It is also a bit frustrating when Gary has seen our group at other competitions, and has judged us pretty well there, then we give what we believed to be our best performance, and he doesn't recognize it...
