Southwestern was VERY, VERY good in 2005. That may be why Jason Johnson put them over Pike. I don't know, though. It's just an observation.

Yeah, it's certainly deserving when everyone else has you top 3 and he has you last.

But whatever. It was three years ago and I shouldn't be bitter.

It's just unfortunate that he appears to be continuing this misguided practice of judging his own groups.
You are only opening yourself up to have your integrity questioned if you judge your own groups. No moves that you make will be seen as unbiased. It is a lose-lose situation.
Erroneous.

They may not talk to your face about it, but whenever a judge has a group in the competition, there are always whispers.

Well as I stated earlier, everyone has their own opinions. Its unfortunate that when our school is successful, people look for excuses as to why we did so well. I understand that in show choir, there is always a group or a person being talked about, but never has there been any discrepancies. Its ridiculous that I have to defend my group over something like this. And as for you being bitter, thats just show choir. No matter what the situation is, everyone gets upset because their whole heart is put into a show. But I'm not going to argue over something like this. We do not go to competitions to find an easy win, we go for a challenge, and with some of the groups that are attending this weekend there is sure to be. I know from previous years that Poca and Nitro have reputations of being amazing. St. Clairsville also has quite a good reputation. This weekend will be battle despite who judges.

Not once have we had a problem because most groups know how he judges us, which they like.

So you like being scored lower? That's odd.

As you can see (or not see)... it's not fair either way.

No i do not like being scored lower, but because people share the same feelings as you, he can't look as if he favors us. It really does not bother me that he scores us low because if he thought we really did deserve it, he would score us high, so obviously we have not impressed him. It gives me as well as other members of our group motivation to step up our game. If we do well, its not because he scored us higher, its because we had the passion and drive to win. No matter what we or anyone else will say, people will have their opinions. A competition is a competition, the best will come out on top despite any obstacles there are.

That's the same lame excuse EVERY group gives when their choreographer ends up judging them. You can say it all you want, and it can be true... but this still poses a big conflict of interest and it really shows the character of the competition and/or judge to see if they take themselves out of the judging mix because of it.

I still remember Jason putting Southwestern in the finals over Pike at a competition at Norwell in 2005.

It's super shady judging your own groups.

i can see where you are upset with the situation. i cannot say i wouldn't be..... but a lame excuse? im not so sure i would have called my post an excuse at all. I'm not so sure of what jason will do when it comes to judging us. But im sure he will do what he feels right. and personally. if your not coming to this competition, then why are you posting in here?

and as to you 'Jfreak213' if jason put us above pike in 2005... then we probably deserved it. he RARELY ever puts us above any group because of the ridicule that he receives. ( this is not in ANY way to put pike down. I think you all are an amazing group, with VERY entertaining shows, im just stating an oppinion.)

Im not saying that this is a good thing, to be judged by our choreographer, but theres nothing we can do about it. we had no clue that he was judging us when we entered. but whatever the results turn out to be.... theres always going to be someone who is going to blame the results on our choreographer.

Well, thats fine, we all have our opinions. Not once have we had a problem because most groups know how he judges us, which they like. It actually is in favor of other groups when he judges us due to the fact he scores us so low. I'm not trying to give excuses, we will just have to see what happens this weekend.

It doesn't matter. It's a conflict of interest! It's not professional and I'm not the only one who disagrees with this practice. Ask directors throughout the midwest and I'd bet you would find a similar answer.

Although you may find this a lame excuse, it really isn't. Not once has Jason ever favored us over any group. You may like to think that he puts us at the top, but he doesn't at all. Jason judges strictly on talent.

I agree, I never find it appropriate for someone to judge their own group, whether it be advantageous or disadvantageous for the group.

I can recall specific times in my high school career during band competitions that one of our instructors would be a judge at a competition. One time, it definitely put us over the top, another time, it lost it for us.

I think the same speaks true for show choir. I never find it appropriate when a choreographer/vocal coach/instructor/former director is judging their affiliated group.

Indeed Jason Johnson is Southwestern's Choreographer, but you should know... When Jason Judges us, he knows what we are supposed to look, and sound like. He judges us much harder than the other groups. The last time he judged us, he had us lower than our other competitors, because he was not happy with where we were. You should be relieved if anything. lol

Mike Crandall and Jason Johnson. There is one more, but I'm not sure who it is.

Whoa, Jason Johnson is Southwestern's choreographer. I doubt he is allowed to judge now since they are coming.
