i personally wasnt impressed with some of the groups. I exspected more out of troy and Onalaska, their reputation definately helped them out. I thought Prospect did very well. I dunno, vocally i exspected much more from some of the groups in finals. Wheaton had amazing vocals and they placed last in vocals.

dont get me wrong, i think to the untrianed eye the shows were amazing, i loved the costumes and choreography but......vocals are supposed to be #1....i definately dont think they were considered to the degree they are supposed to be.

.......and placings were interesting is seemed it went from who went first in the day to who went last.....if u went first u got last, if u went second you got second to last...if u went last u probably made it in to finals

it was an interesting competition to say in the least.

Since we're already painfully off-topic, and since you were in Express in 2003, maybe you can answer this- where all did you compete that year? I have been trying to figure out where I saw you guys that year, and it's making me crazy.

haha, yes we are off topic! but thats ok, if i rememeber we went to sedalia, for the show me cup, then Ft. madison, Cedar rapids washington, and big dance but didnt make finals, then orlando but not with fame and not showstoppers it really didnt end up being a competition cause we were like the only ones there and perform flat floor for like two judges. I am glad you guys liked the show! Is it just me or was the ballad amazing that year, have to give props to mallory clark(soloist)

I would just like to say that Troy is happy to compete with the caliber of groups that we do, i relize that show choir is very subjective and everyone has a right to there own opinion. i respect that very much and i would kinda like to close the great river competition if it is going to cause this much trouble. The competition was great and we had a blast, some people like our show some don't that is ok. But as far as the 03 show i am a fan just cause i am in it! it was a great show and i was that it is on youtube now! It brought back some memories!

I have certainly not been to all of their comps -- I was at great river but thats it. I merely posted in Chicagoland to say congrats!

Yes, I sort of figured you were from Spain Park, since you have associated yourself with them. Thanks though!

I was more curious about the few posters who are unassociated and have posted only in topics involving Troy in some way. I just think it's kind of shame when fans/students/parents/etc. make a group look bad through their posts- especially when they are truly ARE associated with the group. I know Troy works hard to be a respectful, humble, show choir and it would be a shame to have that work be for naught because of some overzealous fans.

I'm not some crazy show choir dictator that sways people opinions. We all sat together and talked freely about shows. Some liked Washington... others didn't. Some thought Jefferson was amazing... others, not so much. We all had opinions, and the people who posted about Troy weren't "influenced" by me... they share the same opinions. The Great River DVD has been sent out, and some have received it by now. I am hoping to have mine by tomorrow, and Troy will of course be the first show I post.

I hate Jorge.
And his opinions

I would go out on a limb here and say that those who you sat with might be slightly influenced by the conversations that were shared amoungst the group. Likely those who you sat with would of course back you in your opinion. Also slightly amusing that you call on "those" who sat with you to "defend" your opinion

Sparky... you should have come over and introduced yourself and maybe even sat with us and shared your opinions. I'm sure you would have added some fresh thoughts to our delegation.

No... I don't look stupid. It's my personal opinion that Troy's choreography looked sloppy and that their vocals lacked in finals.

And its other peoples opinion that they should have been 1st runner up and that they were more entertaining and offer a better total show package than Linn Mar or Washington --- that doesnt make us right and you wrong, or vice versa... it is ALL opinion

I'd like to ask some of the SCCers I sat with at Great River... do you agree? Or am I just "stupid"?

So... I have to ask. Because I want to.

Are any of you defending Troy (and posting only in topics involving them) FROM Troy? Or is it just coincidence that you've been to all of the competitions they've been to?

Adam, I agree.

I've enjoyed Troy's show for a long time, however this show just didn't do it for me at all.

especially when the group you call sloppy wins best choreo....then you just look stupid!

I would also like to reinforce the fact that BEST choreography doesn't mean CLEANEST choreography, saying that you can have sloppy choreography, but still win best choreography!

I think as far as vocals lacking, I agree. They have quite a few people on stage, and the sound just didn't match up to that. The blend was alright, but there were quite a few issues. The band overplayed, the singers under-sang. I think the only reason that this is an issue is that Sparky brought up the fact that he thinks that they should've won at great river. I don't know about anyone else, but as soon as I saw Kennedy at great river, I knew they had it in the bag, by a long shot.

The show must have gotten a lot better, and I'm glad that Troy got a Grand Championship under their belts. Like I said, I've always enjoyed Troy's shows (Favorite 2003!!) but this years didn't do it for me!

I would agree.l Their show just wasn't as tight as I saw all day, from Jefferson and Linn Mar, and even Momentum in finals. The show, as a whole, in my opinion was sloppy. It was all over the place. And as Adam has stated, that was Great River this was Chicagoland, two totally different competitions, later in the season, maybe the results would have been different.
And while Momentum may not have the most entertaining show, it is certainly done very well, and i realize how i was wrong when I watched their shows at Great River and my feelings.
And also sadly with choreography i don't think they take into account of how difficult and complex the choreography is, and if they would I think Linn Mar would have (and I think should have) won no doubt in that category.

And Troy's style of show is not my cup of tee, but neither is Momentum, and as Nick said how do you judge two totally different, near perfect styles?

But I won't go on with my feelings about this topic because it was a competition way past. If you want to debate with me more please feel free to PM me

I remember Great River. I remember the soloists mikes not working for the first 4 soloists during Troy's day performance. (some other choirs had the same misfortune) That was a crappy situation. I thought their evening performance was great and I just got the feeling that the judges just didn't like their style. Every choir runs into that situation at some point. There are a lot of great choirs out there that dominate at some events and do so-so at others and I think alot of that has to do with the judges. The judges all have different styles and things that they look for. All these kids love performing and give it their all so to say "sloppy and under-par" is an insult to any of the choirs that perform at this level.

So basically you are saying that ALL 5 night round judges didn't like Troy's style??? That's a bit bizarre. First off, every judge from Great River except for one was not from Iowa. I think Troy has an amazing show... but as stated earlier, they start off their season slow, and improve as it goes along. Yes, the soloist mics didn't work for Troy and numerous other groups... but the judges didn't take off for that. I was never attacking the kids. I just felt they didn't have an "on" performance in finals. Sorry you feel that I have "insulted" Troy.

But this is getting a little " border="0" alt="offtopic.gif" /> Basicly Troy rightfully earned the grand champion award at the 2007 Chicagoland Showcase which they definatly earned (and I can say that cause I was there and hey... they beat my group!)

No... I don't look stupid. It's my personal opinion that Troy's choreography looked sloppy and that their vocals lacked in finals. But they did place fourth, so obviously somewhere I am correct in saying what I say. I never said Troy didn't earn their GC at Chicagoland... so I don't know why you refer to that.

I'd like to ask some of the SCCers I sat with at Great River... do you agree? Or am I just "stupid"?

Were you at Great River???

If you were... that's great. I was there and saw every single performance of the entire preliminaries and finals. By seeing both performances, it was clear to me that Troy did not deserve the win. Their evening performance was very under-par and sloppy. Their day performance was pretty on target, but even then there were better groups competing that day. Maybe had Great River been this month, and Troy would have competed, maybe then they would have won. But, on February 17th, there were three better choirs.
