PS...I didn't mean to imply that Linn-Mar's shows have been different from one year to the next. I'm saying their show this weekend was different than the choirs they competed against.
Agreed.
Ankeny, Cedar Rapids Washington, and Davenport Central have the whole "classy/tap/42nd Street" show choir style going on while Linn Mar is a variety of genres all in one show.

I wasn't demeaning Washington's performance in any way nor did I comment on the fact that the judges were crazy. As I stated earlier in my post, show choir is subjective. Judges have their own opinions of what makes a show choir good and nobody can change that nor would I want them to change that. (It keeps things interesting)
Maybe one thing I didn't make clear wasn't just the fact that Linn-Mar had a different show, but that I think they performed better than Central and Washington. Vocally I thought they were so much more connected and invested. Perhaps my comments came across harsh or biased, but I still stand by my opinion. I'm sorry if I came across as rude. I guess that's the beauty of subjectivity...it doesn't really care who it upsets.

no offense to what you said nick, because i agree, but that is sorta BS
Cedar Rapids Washington has been the show choir that does the different show for over 10 years now. And they've always been placed lower than how they arguably could have. But no one has ever stuck up for them. So I'm not really sure why whenever they place relatively well at a competition by beating good groups that everyone loves (Great River 2005, and now here) people are always like "Wow what happened to that one group. The judges must have been crazy" instead of thinking "Hey maybe Momentum had an awesome show and maybe they improved a WHOLE LOT since I last saw them". Now I know this may not pertain to any comments from this competition, but it has been going on for years. Maybe they did have an awesome show, and maybe Davenport Central did too. Maybe y'all should think about giving those choirs their due credit, because they worked hard to put on a good show and score higher than an AWESOME group like Linn-Mar.
I agree on some parts, mostly about giving choirs their "due credit". I had to laugh though at your opening remark though, Jay... "no offense... because i agree, but that is sorta BS". A very solid way to start out a discussion.
Honestly... I don't find Momentum's show to be "different" this year, or even in the last few years (2004 was certainly "different). I think the reason why Momentum is labeled as "different" is because of their unique choreography and their sometimes obscure song selection.

I was completely shocked at the results of this competition. My jaw literally dropped after the day round when they announced 10th Street as being in 4th. My jaw fell completely off after finals when Linn-Mar hadn't moved up. After seeing all finalists twice that day I would say Linn-Mar deserved 3rd at least if not 2nd. Of course, show is subjective.
From what I observed yesterday and last night, I gathered that Linn-Mar was the only show that truly stood out from the rest of them. Take Ankeny or even CR Washington for example: Their choreography was extremely clean and well-executed, but what connection did it have to their music? I think Linn-Mar danced to the words they were singing. They didn't dance for 20 measures and then sing a little. They executed their interpretation through their choreography and I think that's part of the reason they didn't place as well as they would have liked. Coming from a choir who has somewhat branched from the "typical show choir show" in recent years, I know how it feels to have your group be singled out because your show is different. I'm not saying the groups that placed ahead of Linn-Mar performed poorly because they truly are exceptional groups. I'm saying I think part of the reason Linn-Mar was 4th was the fact that their show stretched the boundaries of what show choir "should be." Then again, I'm only 18 years old so maybe my opinion is naive and meaningless. All-in-all, every group performed to their full potential and in the end that's all that really matters.
P.S.....Ankeny......wow.

I know Jeni Donahue was a judge. Chelsea was talking to me about some person who judged them low... But I was not in a correct state of mind to remember the name.
It was Ankeny's prep soloist. Her name is Cameron. The varsity soloist is Dani Cisna and I love her!!!!! but Cameron is also AMAZING and really nice!!!!!
