Single-Gender means "of, designed, or suitable for both sexes; not distinguishing between male and female; undifferentiated as to sex." That's the exact opposite of the way it's completely misused in show choir, where people have tried to apply it to divisions meaning "one gender." It's wrong, and just because ignorance has kept tradition alive doesn't mean we should support it. Quite the opposite, we are doing our part to educate and inform.

So by a strict interpretation of those rules it sounds like you can be in two mixed gender groups as long as one of the groups is designed so that you can't tell the difference between the boys and girls...i.e. Single-Gender.
A single-gender group is one that is comprised soley of members of one gender (ie, all guys or all girls). You know this. It doesn't mean a group made up of guys and girls where one of the genders is disguised to appear as the other gender for the entire show in an effort to get around the rule of having multiple genders in a group. What? lol. That sounds like something a bad lawyer would try to pull.

This is a bit nonsense.

I was trying to make a joke...

Okay....the stupid autocratic censorship filter changed the word u.n.i.s.e.x. to single-gender no matter how I tried to spell it in the last post. The Iowa rule uses the u word.

So in my last post you can just replace every Single-Gender with the term u.n.i.s.e.x.

However, I thought Iowa amended their rules so you can now be in a single-gender group and a varsity. You just can't be in two mixed-gender choirs. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Admittedly, I don't check up on IHSMA rules very often (ever).
The new rule actually reads as follows:

A single student may participate in one Mixed Show Choir and one Single-Gender Show Choir as a vocal performer.

I know Häakon has a pet peeve about the use of the term Single-Gender since its technical definition is "designed to be suitable for both sexes" or "a style in which men and women look and dress in a similar way."

So by a strict interpretation of those rules it sounds like you can be in two mixed gender groups as long as one of the groups is designed so that you can't tell the difference between the boys and girls...i.e. Single-Gender.

I know that certain competitions put prep groups that have any members also competing in the schools varsity group into the varsity category. I'm not sure if that is why my high school is doing that or if Westside's prep group has any ladies who also perform with ATSC but, "in my opinion", I think it makes sense. Otherwise defeating the purpose of a "prep" group...

Westside has no crossover people meaning nobody in Simply Irresistible is in any other group (ATSC or Warrior Express). UNLESS you're counting the stage crew- whereas we do have MANY crossovers!

Walking back to our hotel in donwtown NYC at 2:30 in the morning; my favorite show choir memory...

Technically, I think Finale went til like 2:30 here in the midwest, so that's the longest one I can remember. But having been at that Great River, I agree with Chris. SOOOOOOOOO long.

But I fully support the no crossover rules. I also think in Iowa it's not allowed at all at any comp that I know of?!
In California, most competitions ban crossovers from different groups of any skill level, except for the all-guys choirs, who would likely have 4 people in them if that rule applied to them.

No need for formalities here, Mr. Temple... you can call me Adam. :-p

It was Mundelein. "Sound" was in 6th place and "Lights" was the winner of the prep/Single-Gender division making them eligible for finals. They were given the choice on who would get to perform. They picked "Lights" and the competition then allowed Davenport North the spot in finals since they were in 7th place.

That's correct, Kevin. This famously caused the disqualification of a group at Great River a few years back. I can't remember it it was Mundelein or Crete Monee. I'm positive your buddy Jorge/Adam would remember though.

I think you are right. It started a few years ago cause Waconia prep had 4 crossover guys. I believe Hastings and totinos comps both started that rule then. When I choreographed Totino t-tones a few years back they had a lot of company of singers guys. I wonder if they are strictly just prep group guys now? If so that's amazing for numbers. Or maybe they are supposed to be in open class like Omaha girls. I've never seen Omaha girls but I've heard they are fantastic. Same as Mundelien girls who I believe are also made up of a percentage of the varsity group girls. Also very good.
But I fully support the no crossover rules. I also think in Iowa it's not allowed at all at any comp that I know of?!

Thanks for the schedule, Mr. McCoy.

It's interesting to see Westside's women's group competing in the top division instead of with the other prep groups. I mean, they're certainly capable of competing with the advanced mixed groups just an interesting choice I guess.

I know they were in the top division last year and perhaps the year before, so they must be up for the challenge! They certainly are a fantastic group!

Thanks for posting the competition info above!
