To everyone who has made predictions, I'm apart of Johnston Innovation and I was woundering what you thought is keeping us back? And what we can improve on?
Love it when people ask this question. so much better than people jsut getting mad that people don't think their school is good.

You know what I think Kameron, it's choreo. This competition will come down to choroe, because all the choirs have great vocals.

My surely incorrect Predictions
GC Wheaton BV BC
1RU Prairie BB
2RU Kennedy
3RU/4RU Johston
4RU/3RU Ankeny
5RU Lincoln Southwest

5RU could also be Totino, but from what I've seen and heard this year, this is my prediction. It'll be wrong, but oh well.

I saw Ankenys prep at Showzam and they were amazing. If this helps a all Protege got first at Linn Mar with Synergy right behind in 2nd.
Protege also won prairie & got 6th over all and they won muscatine and got 5th over, I think prep is going to be just as cut throat as varsity! Two days people

I didn't even realize how GREAT the prep competition is going to be.... Kennedy, prairie, ankney & Johnston & Lincoln southwest... Oh my god can you say prep powerhouses !!! Should be so fun to watch! Can't wait!

I totally agree! I can't wait to see the other prep groups that I haven't been able to see yet this year as well as be able to compete against them! The prep competition will be almost just as good as the varsity competition in my mind. Does anyone have any predictions pertaining to the prep competition?

In my opinion I say that you guys should just move this discussion to another thread and stop cluttering this one. Even though it has been interesting to read and listen to the many thoughts on show choir and its history, I think people come to this thread to read about the competition at hand, not about previous competitions, results, and history. I'm not looking to start a fight and be the bad guy, I just think you guys should make a separate thread for this kind of topic instead of using this one.
Amen!

Franklin Central also lost to La Crosse Central (Wisconsin) last year. But GCS was just freaking amazing.

But let's not just talk last year. Carmel, Center Grove, Franklin Central, Lawrence Central.... these are all groups that have beaten Iowa choirs on numerous occasions. Center Grove beat Ankeny last time they faced. Franklin Central has beaten groups like Urbandale, Linn-Mar, Omaha Westside, Buffalo Grove, Twinsburg etc. Lawrence Central beat Kennedy and Hastings when they competed at FAME Chicago in 2010.

Illinois is between Iowa and Indiana, and I've always said it creates a void that the two states rarely ever cross. CR Jefferson is the only group I can think of that has recently competed in Indiana. I believe Lafayette Jefferson was the last Indiana group to compete in Iowa and that was all the way back in 2006. So there is not a lot of cross-competition between Iowa and Indiana groups.

But just because all of you guys haven't seen Indiana choirs live or taped, that does not mean those choirs are not good powerhouse choirs. I mean just YouTube them. It's not hard. They are all over. Overall, Indiana choirs are at a much higher level than Iowa choirs. Especially vocally and show design. And the reason is they have been around longer and competing longer. Also, these Indianapolis schools are like twice the size of Iowa schools. You can give me 10, 20 thumbs downs for this post and my last post, but I stand by my statement.

Agreed. I am a neutral party (Illinois), and I saw most of the big name Iowa and Indiana groups last year at the dozen or so competitions I attended, and the only Iowa group at the FC, CG, Carmel level was Linn-Mar.

But even just from watching low quality videos on Youtube (which usually do groups no justice), you can tell if a group can be competitive with other tops caliber groups from other states. I'm not saying you have to judge or rank them, but it's pretty obvious from videos alone that choirs like Franklin Central and Carmel and Center Grove can very well compete with Wheaton and Akeny. Even if there is no judge to prove it in scores, I think we all have enough show choir knowledge to know what a finals deserving performance looks and sounds like.

At the level of competition these groups are at, barring Clintons Choreo, lots of point spreads start becoming personal preference

I got a copy of that one too - it was CR Washington, SC East, Johnston, Ft. Madison, IC West and DSM Lincoln. That was the first year in I don't know how many that CR Jefferson didn't attend (they had won it every time they entered) - they finally came back (and won, haha) in 1993...

Ya, Jefferson won 13 of 13 years they attended, at least until 1998. I don't know if they went back since then or how they have done if they have.

I used to have the 1991 "McDonalds Swing Choir Jamboree" Finals tape. That was awesome! Wash, Johnston, Sioux City East (more that I can't remember too). Really cool to look back and watch. Wish I knew where I put that....

This is a great discussion. I have no knowledge of Indiana show choirs so I just enjoy reading about everyones thoughts on it all, keep it going. I say everyone just meet up at Wheaton and throw down and see what the outcome is!

I have several VHS tapes of our competition from the early and mid nineties.

Not necessarily. I think you're missing the point. Say you have three different pools of fish. These fish are dueling goldfish. Totally badass, right? Anyway, the top three fish in pool A could be totally destroyed by the 12th place fish in pool B. Likewise, pool C could have the best (or worse) fish in the world, but you have no way of knowing unless you put them all in the same pool. In a (statistically) ideal world, every show choir would compete in one massive competition.

That's kind of why it's so hard to judge different show choirs against each other. We're all competing in different pools (competitions, even states) and unless those pools get adequately mixed up, it's difficult (and unfair) to say which fish is best.

Unless a show choir competes in other states (other pools) it's difficult to say how good they would be against the show choirs who compete in that state.

I'd be on some of those! Scary...

I am curious though - when did the switch over from the "McDonald's Swing Choir Jamboree" name turn to just the Urbandale Show Choir Invitational?

Clinton hasn't competed in Iowa since 2004, but I think we would all say they are better than all of the Iowa show choirs.

Burbank and Burroughs haven't ever competed in Iowa, but again, we'd all say they are all better than our best.

Seems like Illinois competitions would be a great place for schools in both Iowa and Indiana to compete together then.

Unless a show choir competes in other states it's difficult to say how good they would be against the show choirs who compete in that state.
Sadly, that doesn't stop people from trying to "rank" them anyway.
