It may make more sense if you looked at the scores of the groups and maybe did a grade scale for them. Just as an example!!:
Powerhouse - Music 59/60 - Show 37/40
Sound Vibrations - Music 54/60 - Show 37/40
Chantuers - Music 58/60 - Show 37/40
In Sync - Music 58/60 - Show 39/40
And if you took the percentages of their scores, they all recieved "Letter Grade" A but it was up to the judges to decide who performed the best.

Is this an official governing body? Has every participating director agreed to these expectations? Is it majority rule, or the opinion of one or two on how things should be run?
I think Matt was referring to the implication that midwest groups don't have "exciting things happening on and off the stage" and that midwest groups aren't "respective and supportive of other groups."

No one is saying that Midwestern choirs don't respect and support each other. The specific respect that is being discussed in the original post, however, is directly related to the issue at hand of being in the auditorium and watching all of the other groups perform. There aren't any rules in the Midwest that I'm aware of (written or implied) which state that every choir MUST watch any certain number of groups perform at their competitions. Many choirs come and go during the day, and people only really begin to settle in their seats during the finals. The consortium of directors in Southern California have made it known that they EXPECT everyone in the audience (which includes all performing choirs) to watch ALL other groups perform at an event. That, in itself, is a core difference in approaches between the two styles. Please note, again, that I am not passing judgement on either system; just clarifying the contrast.
The directors of both FAME and SHOWSTOPPERS were there in attendance!

I think it improved a lot from Aztec; in fact I think it was Burroughs' strongest song on Friday night. I also like hearing a girl do the solo part (instead of a guy, like they used in 1997). Definitely one of the solid parts of their set.

Some midwest competitions have a LOT more groups in attendance... most participants don't sit down at 8:00am, stay there through the entire event, and leave after the awards finish at 10:00pm. Our competitions don't have homerooms for the choirs; the large majority don't even have "meal" type food available - just small snacks like candy that you can grab in the five minutes between groups. That's not to say that either is better, or that anyone "should" or "shouldn't" do anything, but yes, there is a difference.

Indeed most midwest groups do watch the other choirs. However, as it is a competition, some directors prefer groups not see other shows before their performance. They keep their group focused on only their performance. It's not about being unsupportive of other groups, but merely being ready to deliver their absolute best when onstage.
But now it's starting to make sense. CA directors are pissed that Brett Carroll would have the audacity to allow his kids to do anything other than what is customary in the quaint, love-in style of Southern CA competition. Burbank has achieved a level that most can only dream of, and the best they can come up with in response is to cry "foul." If that doesn't smack of 'sore losers' I don't know what does.

hart people are the best... awesome performance last night! im asian, but i dare dream to break dance like that.
can we STOP talking about what happened with in sync missing groups..
we have heard BOTH sides arguments... and is no longer necessary.
so from this post on... i have a request:
-no more talking about bad placements
-no more talking about choirs missing other choirs performances
-no more talk of rumors
-take this whole situation and use it as a reminder of what NOT to do
-make this season the most intense and most AWESOME year EVERRRR

...'tis a good time to be in show choir. We should all really be thankful for the fact that these competitions ARE so close and so hard to predict. That just means that we're all performing at a higher and higher level each time and that we're all awesome choirs.
MY personal favorites/highlights of the night have to include Sound FX, El Rancho, Hart, In Sync, and Out of the Blue...not to say that i didn't enjoy everyone, but those were the performances that had me saying wow.
Los AL - You guys totally connected with the audience. My choreographer, the lovely Jen Oundjian, tells us to try to get the audience to want to come up on stage with us and dance. That's exactly what you did....to the point where half of the audience was literally out of their seats by the third song. awesome
El Rancho - ALso highly entertaining. From the very first number, with the soloist pumping up the audience, you guys had everyone in the auditorium in the palms of your hands. It was wonderful stuff, very innovative and daring.
Hart - I must say I was a little bit dissapointed after seeing your set wednesday night. The talent was all there but the overall performance that night was just lacking something, i thought. Then Friday night it was like you had had two months of rehearsal time. Not only was everything much sharper and intense, you guys seemed to have that something that it was lacking a couple nights before. YOu were on, and just like los al and el rancho you had everyone ruinging their voices.
In Sync - I won't even mention the whole thing with you guys not being there or rehearsing outside because I know a lot of you and judging from what i do know of Mr. Carrol, he would never try to bend the rules in any way to gain an unfair advantage. You all performed spectacularly and you got what you deserved. Just like HArt, I saw something in your performance that I didn't get last week at Aztec. YOu connected. congratulations.
Out of the Blue - I'm curious, are most of the people in OUt of the Blue Freshman/Sophomores? The performers LOOK young...that is until they start performing and then they all look like veterans. I don't know where you get it from; I know it took me a few competitions to really understand what the whole show choir thing was my freshman year,but you guys all show up and nail it right away. awesome job
