No.. Milton didn't have any penalties. Mt. Zion was the only group that went over.

Congrats to Holmen and their new director Troy Larson!!!! So proud!!!!

What happened to milton? I watched them and thought for sure they would make finals. Did they get a penalty or did i just see something different from the judges?

I just saw this. I have no idea. I think Milton has a great show this year! And they sing better than last year. I saw them at Viterbo, and while I didn't have them in finals I was surprised they placed that low. Maybe judges just don't like it this year? Or maybe we are the only two people that do lol.

There was obviously something else going on because their director was on stage for a good time while the rest of the group seemed ready. But anyways, congrats to everyone there as well as onalaska and hosting a greaat competition.
P.s yes I am a mtz enthusist (hence the name from last years show) but that doesn't mean I will make excuses for them. Just what my thought process is on the whole ordeal.


They couldn't get the power to work correctly.

Everyone was so great!! i was truly impressed at how well all of the groups did!! i had to host but got to watch most of finals with was amazing and as for mt zion... well THEY WERE FANTASTIC! :D i hope that they come back next year because our competition just wouldnt be the same without them! they bring a level of class and competition that adds something really special to the Classic as does every other group that came <3

What we were told was that Mt. Zion went over by 4 minutes, with a 25 point penalty for each minute. Not sure if that's true, but it seems to make more sense than a 30 pt. deduction.

Just wanted to say that I'm super proud of Holmen and Logan !!! Great job guys !

This not true at all. I talked to an Onalaska show choir member and they reduced the timing to ten points per minute. So, they got a 30 point reduction.

But, moving on... Mt. Zion's show was soooo good. Congrats to them and good luck with the rest of your season! I agree that a point-mark down is ridiculous for food and time, but being on time is important as well and I'm sure Ona just wanted their schedule to run smoothly.

Congrats to all the groups who performed on Saturday. I was really impressed with each group, especially La Crosse Logan and the "Princess and the Frog" group! SO fun!

This is the key to all of this. The life blood of a good show choir competition is the line up of groups attending it. Groups these days probably have three different competitions within driving distance they could attend on any Saturday from mid-January to mid-March, so you have to run your competition well and make those groups want to return.

If you do not like the rules of a competition the solution is simply to not go to that competition anymore.
This is the key to all of this. The life blood of a good show choir competition is the line up of groups attending it. Groups these days probably have three different competitions within driving distance they could attend on any Saturday from mid-January to mid-March, so you have to run your competition well and make those groups want to return.

I can think of at least two competitions we've attended in the past that we will never return to because of the way it was run or a rule we didn't like.

So what exactly happened to Mt. Zion? just a time penalty or some other penalty? Good luck to everyone tonight. Sad that Mt. Zion will not be there? Anyone know what the standings were if they were not penalized?
Mt. Zion would have been in 3rd place with 3 points behind Monona Grove. The penalty put them in 7th place.

At Manteno Main Event , We have the riser configuration your director gives us. We will build it to your specs if you provide the layout when you fill out the application. We will remove risers and even change orientation of each riser. You cannot use more than the standard 4x4 components and you may add your own as you wish. The stage crew completes the base setup in the 10 minutes before your show. Once you enter the stage, you are on the clock for 25:00. We rarely ever get anyone with time penalties, and we very rarely ever deviate from the schedule in the 6 years I have been on stage crew.

It's all about understanding the rules and environment you are in and scouting the stage and locations before hand.

As a parent, I agree with Mr. Temple's post above. I think the risers should remain in the same configuration for all competitors. It is hard enough to host and organize an event without calling in extra man power to re-configure the basic stage setup. Add to it all you want, but the base stays the same. All schools start from the exact same platform, which I feel is fair. I do agree with the time limit of 25 minutes. Anyone who knows our show knows we add 9 extra wooden risers, 6 8' boxes, 3 or 4 small boxes, typically a back drop of some sort, and the last 2 years, 4 or 5 light towers. I think only once in the last 4 years have we incurred a time penalty, and that was only 15 seconds over. Most of our stuff is all pre-assembled, just carry it on stage and set it down. I'm sure it looks like mass chaos at times, but the plan usually works.

I understand that time penalties are not the best, but i still think competitions should have the option of having a time limit if they feel they need it. I come from a school where our competition does not time groups, but we RARELY are behind and if we ever are it's by 5 minutes at the most. Having emceed the competition 2 years ago I know that it is possible to do everything in 25 minutes and not even have the student feel rushed. I do agree with Spencer though, it's weird how that is. Last year Onalaska was so behind that we almost missed the start of finals at Viterbo.

In this specific instance, Mt. Zion has been going to Onalaska since the beginning of time, so I really think excuses are not necessary. They have been to this competition year after year and should know the rules and the ins-and-outs of the competition. If there is not enough room on the stage one suggestion would be to put the band off to the side. MANY of the top Indiana choirs do that. But, if the band space, and the riser D not being offstage is such a problem I would think the director would not take his group to the competition year after year after year. I know of multiple other competitions that do the same exact thing. If you do not like the rules of a competition the solution is simply to not go to that competition anymore.

I find it ironic that Onalaska is one of the few competitions with penalties for exceeding a time limit, but I clearly remember that Onalaska 2009 was the furthest behind schedule of any competition that I have ever attended. Strange how some things work.

My personal view is that groups should be able to take as much time as they need (within reason) to set up in order to put on their best show...time and food in room penalties are silly.

My school hosts a show choir competition and we've never had time penalties and our competition has very rarely run more than a few minutes late. We also do not allow any of the risers to be removed. It's 4 x 4 the whole day. You're welcome to add to it, but we're not removing any risers or drastically changing the configuration.

The "food in room" penalties, however, are not silly. We rely on having the cooperation of the teachers whose rooms we are using as homerooms for the participating show choirs. If we allowed food in the rooms and huge messes were made in most of them (and they would be) we would lose that cooperation. They would complain to administrators and that would be that...no more show choir competition, which is the major funding for our program.

Im a MZ Parent and in our defense- we dont usually have to deal with schools NOT willing to move the risers and trying to put 14 combo members in a 3 ft space doesnt exactly fit- it wasnt the show- at Onalaska they will NOT remove row D they just push it back leaving NO room for combo- they could not get the power sorce set up do to lack of room- and as for timing riser set up- it should be about safty to the students not pushing a time clock! WE DO PRACTICE our set up and tear down - we have great dads that take care of our kids well being! and we dont use back drops- we use risers! that is our PROP of choice. Last year we went over- it was the show- this year not the case! Everyone looked great yesterday including our kids- they were in 3rd place going into finals before penalties. There are more fish to fry and other comps - NO WORRIES!!!! We are just out to do what we can and have fun doing it! With or without a trophy we have a great group of WINNERS!!!!! Good luck to everyone with the rest or your comp season!
