I'm just a bit upset about the critique because the comments written down were things we couldn't change, like our set list. Can't exactly switch things and it's our director's decision on the theme and everything.
This is the age old question as to what exactly should be adjudicated at show choir competitions. There are those that argue that only what the students do onstage should be subject to criticism; in show categories, that would leave virtually nothing but choreography execution and posture.
Look at the scale at the top of the scoresheets, it says 1-2 Poor / 3-4 Fair / 5-6 Good / 7-8 Excellent / 9-10 Superior. If, as your example, he thought you were off tune the entire time he would have given 1-2 in Intonation. 6's clearly fall into the Good category. We have all become too accustomed to judges scoring high. It's great to see judges willing to use the entire rubric available; makes things much clearer.
Oh alright, well I didn't see the score sheet up close, so I didn't get to see the scoring chart. Only thing is that they didn't really give comment explanations other than the fact they didn't really like the show and stuff is what makes me a bit ehh..., but again we didn't get a chance to hear from any of the judges' oral critique, except for one, who was pretty detailed, really gave me a better image of what we need to work on.

Some of the judges even said the thing they were looking for is story, which we definitely do not have because my director is pretty traditional. We do have a very, very vague theme, which is musicals throughout the years. Also, I'm not saying we were robbed of a placing or anything.
One of the judges gave us 3's and 4's out of 10's... One of the other judges gave us low scores too around 3's to 6's...

P.S. For those of you who may be interested. I was there all day photographing everyone's shows, so I'll try to have those up within the next week or so. Loved Burroughs competition, so much fun watching this competition and in the end we got free pizza because they had leftovers, which is awesome! :D

First off, I want to say congrats to everyone who performed at Showcase. Everyone did an amazing job and I love the changes that I noticed in choirs that I have previously seen this year. I hope everyone has as much fun as I did. Keep up the great work!!! :D

Competitions are somewhat different out here. I think there are a lot of things that may impact this decision, but there are more womens groups (per capita) in general on the west coast, we don't have finals, all of our schools are outdoors (we don't have homerooms and people aren't running around the school all day long), and for the most part people stay in the auditorium the majority of the time. There are always lots of people watching the performing group regardless of what division they're in. There may be limited space in the theater and giving free tickets to all of the mixed groups may fill up the majority of the seats, and since these competitions are fundraisers, I'm sure they made the choice to get as many people with paid tickets in the venue as possible.
Mhmm, well sometimes there are homerooms, but yeah there isn't enough seats for everyone, I just asked because last year we were allowed to come at the same time as our womens choir to come and support them. Although, at John Burroughs' competition we do have homerooms and it's one of the competitions I love a lot because you aren't exactly forced to stay in the theater and you can roam around when you like. Aztec Sing on the other hand was super strict, you had to have bathroom passes and if you were caught outside like without a bathroom pass you would get penalized. D:

Only choirs (not schools) performing within a given session have seats for that session. Tickets are available for purchase to see other sessions, however. So a Marquis member would need to buy a ticket to see Solitaire, and vice-versa.
