Well, to my knowledge, Big Dance doesn't hold their competition in the gym anymore, so I don't know how you can know if my statement was correct or not.... I went to Big Dance 3 times when it was in the gym so I think I know what the acoustics there were like....
Sorry, didnt mean it like that, i was talking about gyms in general, i agree that gyms definitely can hinder a performance, but it affects everyone competing. i guess its how well groups and bands adjust to the different settings.
I disagree with the good performance or bad performance thing and the band covering up, singers can sing louder. lol. Just a random point a friend and i thought of today actually. WSD only won in gyms this year, hah, and i must say the performances were great and the wins earned, but we were aware the entire time on stage that is was great. Just one of those connections and vibes we all have on stage with our family

Agreed and disagreed. One big reason why groups stopped coming to Big Dance was because the acoustics in the gym were so awful, you never knew if you were having a good or bad performance. Bands were ALWAYS covering up groups. But it is nice to be able to easily fit everyone in.

That's correct. Even though our new auditorium seats almost 1200 people we still are forced to turn students away late in the day when it fills up. It's not quite as bad for crowding as Linn-Mar, but it's still an issue.
We'll never move out of the auditorium now though just because of logistical and cost reasons.
Yeah we found out at the contest in 2005 (less than a few months after it was finished) that the brand new 1200 seat auditorium wasn't nearly big enough.
All the equiptment is available here as well, but I think in general we might tend to have a bit bigger auditoriums in indianapolis so most are still in auditoriums... Just population difference. Pike's seats around 3000 I believe? it seems monstrous, Carmel's is about the same (wish they'd host a competition, but they really don't need anymore money... Ppl from out of state would cry if they saw that highschool...) Ben Davis hasn't built a new one yet, so their competition is in the gym, and North Central's seats over 2000 I believe. Also pretty huge, but they have no balcony. Pike does and I'm serious, If you've never been to Pike's auditorium to watch a choir contest, you really need to. Sit third or 4th row balcony and you won't complain about hearing anything. Plus I love the black stage.

I can't see how anyone would ever do that now unless there wasn't a larger venue nearby for rent.

Us Iowans can't help it. Everyone here loves show choir so they come to watch and support. They simply can't fit into an auditorium, so we have to move it to a gym.

Anyway, and maybe this is a difference between Indiana and Iowa competitions. Almost all of the competitions in the state are held in the gym so the logistical things (stages, sound, lights, etc.) are readily available. In fact, the only one, other than Linn-Mar, that comes to mind is Great River, and that is only because they rent out a performance venue big enough to seat everyone.
just wanna put this out there.. i agree with moving it to the gym because for kennedy ,Protege and Chantures almost did not get to watch happines because there were to many peple.... i mean its a great auditorium but its to small to hold such a GREAT! compatition

All I know is our auditorium at the high school seats around 650 people and we felt that STILL wasn't enough room to host our competition in. Instead of moving it to our gym we moved it to a middle school that has our city's Performing Arts Center attached. It seats 1,200. Obviously, I realize that option isn't available to everyone... but come on- Linn Mar's auditorium seats 340 people.
Our Auditorium holds 850, our Little Theatre hold 340. Just to clarify.
again, I understand how in years past (2009 especially) the aud was way filled to capacity, but this year I really didn't think it was too full. the bad part was the HUGE line to get into the aud. there were hundreds of people standing outside the whole time. but after each performance enough people cleared out to let everyone else in. remember there were groups like Kennedy and Washington who have 2 prep groups (or Jefferson too since Ovation is about the size of 2 choirs) and most of those kids just come in to watch their varsity and then leave.
My biggest problem is that towards the end of the day, the Linn-Mar volunteers are forced to say that any student or chaperone (those with stamps versus wristbands) is not allowed in. Again, part of the reason for bringing choirs together is for the students to see the other groups. If they can't see them live, they might as well watch them on YouTube.
