I think Wheaton should pull a Linn-Mar 09 and add a seventh group in finals.
That would just make finals even more epic! Haha. Was there a tie in prelims that brought a 7th group into finals? I haven't heard this story.
It's going to be pretty serious either way.
I am officially really, REALLY excited to announce that I will be attending finals here :D.
Now, someone want to meet up with me so I don't feel like a total loner sitting by myself? haha. Wonder which 6 groups I'll be watching...
That is a good question isn't it? I see that Linda helpped with Troy acording to the choir pages. Is this still current, or was she supposed to and never did? I am curious about this myself!
I always have a hope in a judge that they could remove a bias twords a group they may work with, or have worked with. I know that it won't always happen and someone will always be there to nit pick that those scores but it is becoming so common for someone to help clean one day, do a half of a song and then move to another choir.
It would be a good idea for you to associate yourself with a choir too please, it is requred to post on the boards
I'm not "associated" with any choir. I am just an adult who enjoys watching groups perform. I try to go to a few competitions each year if I have time. Wish I was coming to this one. I had a niece that went to Eisenhower many years ago and have always loved watching/reading about show choir. This site is kinda my way of keeping up on what's going on in the show choir world. And my question is one that I've wondered for years...the responses on this feed make sense though. They may be a tad more critical, they may not. I just wanted to know if there was some kind of rule out there.
Seconding MtBob1021's post. In my experience I've found that the judges tend to be more critical with groups that they have worked with in the past. I don't think any judge, especially someone like Ms. McEachran, would put their reputation and career on the line by giving a group an unfairly high score just because they hired him or her for clinician work in the past.
The only conflict I could see if it's the group's choreographer or show designer, because it'd obviously be impossible to impartially score your own Inventiveness/Creativity/Difficulty/Flow... but I've never come across that before. I'm sure it's happened though.
But wait - if they are more critical that's not fair either is it?
I agree. predictions are just insane. I think that BD has a much better shot at making finals than you give them credit for. If mundelein has a shot, then I would say WDM Valley has a great shot as well. I think those groups are kinda even. This is just insane. Carmel is going to place very very well at this competition.
And the Single-Gender division! Carmel, WV, Mt Zion, BD, both of Mundeleins Single-Gender. OMG this is gonna be crazy. I wish I wasn't emceeing this weekend or I would SOOOO be here.
OMG this is ridiculous I can't get over it.

This is some kind of crazy order I just put this in. IDK how I did it but this is the order I'll predict day round will go.
Just wondering again....how does this work when one of the judges choreographs for a group. Can they judge that particular group??
Last year at Petal, Our choreographer and our arranger were judges. I've found that since they DO know your show, and know what you're capable of, they judge you to a higher degree. That's not the best way to put it... They can be more nit-picky. Instead of "Clean up those arms, it needs to pop." They can say things like, "Get those arms together, they pop on 6, not 5, not 7, 6. We worked on that." They could also call out names if they know them. I personally don't see a problem with them judging groups that they arrange or choreograph.
Looking forward to a great weekend of cheering my daughter on in her last-ever show choir competition, and this looks to be a really great one! It sure is weird not choreographing a group at the contest or judging, but as a parent I'm probably more emotional than when I'm doing EITHER of the others! For once in my life, I just get to root for my daughter's team. GO CARMEL!
Back on topic, never underestimate Carmel's uncanny ability to come out of nowhere at the end of the contest season and blow everyone out of the water.

It has happened. Two judges at Great River 2008 choreographed groups in finals.

Making predictions for this competition is just crazy because the field is so spread and very even.
Ben Davis and Mundelein could make a case for finals if they have a killer prelim performance.

Well I think we all underestimate the professionalism of the Judges/Choreographers. They all choreograph lots of groups and its hard to pick a lineup of judges with no affiliation to any group. Linda is associated with Troy I believe she did a number for them but let us all remember Linda IS a professional and will do her job with no bias. I mean im sure she has seen/worked/liked several of these groups who will be at this competition because obviously they are all great groups. If anything I think Linda will be more critical towards Troy bc they do have one of her numbers so she will know exactly what it should look like visually and if it doesnt then i guarantee she wont hesitate to score them down. This is a judging setting for these choreographers/directors who are judges. Im sure they would love to sit back and watch all of these great groups perform and I am sure they would enjoy all of them but in a judging sitaution they have to look at it from a non bias platform. We can make the argument that someone will be bias at every comp but thats not going to get us anywhere. I think the best thing we can do is believe and trust that these choreographers/directors are great judges and know what they are talking about and will make the best decision. Looking forward to this comp! So many great diverse groups! Best of luck to all!

I wholeheartedly concur! It happened in '07, '08, and though it didn't happen at ISSMA State '09 it should've. Carmel is SO GREAT this year. I def. see them in top 2

Basically you have these groups competing for six finalist spots.
Waubonsie Valley
Albertville
Eisenhower
Enterprise
Carmel
Mt Zion
Troy Buchanan

It should be a great battle to make it in. I expect Waubonsie Valley and Albertville to finish in the top two. From there it's anyone's game.
