Congrats Waukee on your GC, CR Kennedy on your prep win, and everyone else for your placements. This was a great competition and I would like to thank everyone at Urbandale for that.

What does anyone use to decide who is a powerhouse? Is it GC's? Wins over other groups that have GC's? Xavier has beaten quite a few great groups over the last few years, many of which would earn powerhouse distinction. I can't really say anything about them for this year as I haven't seen them yet, but I can only imagine from their results that they would once again hold their own against pretty much anyone.

For me when i am deciding weather a choir is a "powerhouse" I generally base it off consistently high finishes(1st, second, third) over a several year span, hence why the choirs I named off as "powerhouses" they have all consistently been at the top of the competitions they compete at. This several year picture for me helps filter out "flash in the pan" groups that are absolutly outstanding one year winning everything than the next year not being as successful. Now do I also know that choirs go through down years(well, with the exception of urbandale) yes of course and again this several year picture helps with that.

Realize when I use these terms it is in my OWN personal opinion and like everyone elses here and in this wonderful country of ours is mine and mine alone. I welcome any and all discussion on Iowa show choir as long as its respectable. Though a reminder I am an old fogie who is missing about three years('07,'08,'09) from his internal show choir database so schools who were good in those years and are now good I have no real knowledge of that, so educate me and hey i may change my opinion.

Anywho long post I know but i will say this one final part when I was at Kennedy's first competition in 2006(i believe, maybe 2005) I said when I first saw Xavier perform that "in a few years they are going to be a force to be reckoned with" and hey look they are so congrats to all the groups out there and it is wonderful to come back stateside and see that something that I loved in high school has grown beyond anything i could imagine when i was in high school

EDIT:I need to learn how to capitalize the word I

Trey, I agree that this year Xavier really is a powerhouse, especially with those fabulous vocals.

But Xavier really hasn't beaten anyone I consider to be a POWERHOUSE like Urbandale, Totino, Waubonsie, Ankeny, etc...

Xaiver is an iowa powerhouse. i'd say.

Claryifying a little bit, i am not saying that schools such as xavier, waukee aren't powerhouses now, what I AM saying is that they have grown into the powerhouse roll in order to challenge the older "powerhouses" of schools such as urbandale, ankeny, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Jefferson, as well as other shcools. as a fan of a (for lack of a better term) "mid-major" parity is a beautiful thing.

I know this Adam. Don't treat me like I'm stupid.

Wow? The one time I'm not being snarky... and am just posting a fact... you feel as if I am treating you stupid? You could have pretty much said it on any of my other posts to you... but you chose this one. LAME.

I'm not sure if you mean we haven't beaten anyone like that this season. I would say CR Kennedy and Linn-Mar are usually up on or near that list, but both groups have had better years than this in recent memory.

If you aren't going off of just this season, though, Xavier beat Totino-Grace in 2008.

Well I am bummed ankeny didn't win, but good job Waukee, it is refreshing to see new schools(waukee,Xavier) come in and challenge the "powerhouses" of Iowa show choir. Disappointed to not see Northside in finals, but this was one heck of a competition. andx I love the new aud def. bvetter than the gym.

You did read that. At the day time awards ceremony, they only announced it as "Johnston", if I remember correctly.

My guess is that the original poster misunderstood a rule similar to this one from Great River:
All participants, including instrumentalists, must be a student of the school they are representing.

Exception: piano accompanist may be an adult.

Truth be told, Johnston and Waukee actually tied for best band with 95 points each but somehow the best band award was given only to Johnston. Seems like they should have given 2 awards.

There are usually tie breakers for situations like that.
