I don't have numbers, but from what I understand the order going into finals was:

Cedar Rapids Jefferson (ahead by two points or so)
Cedar Rapids Prairie
Bloomington Jefferson and Milton (sorry, don't know which was ahead after day)
Eau Claire
Fort Atkinson

Milton was ahead of Bloomington Jefferson in pre-lims, because we were 4th, and then moved up to 3rd in finals.

This was such an awesome competition. I just want to say, Westside Delegation, you completely blew my mind. I can honestly say you are the best show choir I have seen perform. Great job, you most definitely deserve your GC

There were no penalties assessed to any group. None.

It kind of makes me wonder how that rumor got started, then. Multiple students and parents from Onalaska that I talked to were under the impression that they got a penalty for jumping off the stage and without that penalty, they would have made finals. And of course, that dovetailed nicely with my opinion that Onalaska's day show was better executed than Fort's was.

Rumors like this can start so easily at show choir competitions. I guess it's just human nature that when people don't know what's actually going on, they speculate.

Thanks for clearing that up, though. Hopefully, Onalaska will be able to re-focus and bounce back at Sauk Prairie.

Fort Atkinson being sixth makes a lot of sense to me. That means that, without the penalty for jumping off the stage that was assessed to Onalaska, Onalaska would have made finals instead of Fort. Based strictly on the merits of their daytime performance, I thought Onalaska was quite a bit better.

However, kudos to Fort for stepping it up during finals and really earning their finals spot. If Fort would have performed that well during the day, there would have been no question about them getting in.

Congrats Jefferson on your GC and prep win and great job to all other show choirs. Thank you everyone from Monona Grove for making this a great competition.

I really enjoyed everyone's shows! I had a really long list here of all the things I liked but suffice to say there are some terrific shows and great choirs this year, especially for so early in the season.

I don't think anyone's posted these yet, so:
best female soloist in a show: Mayville
best male soloist in a show: ???(I know they didn't make finals, it may have been Onalaska)
solo competition, female: Madison East
solo competition, male: Sauk Prairie
duet competition: Lodi

P.S. Inquiring minds (i.e., my friend) want to know where CR Jeff got those sweet boots the girls wear for the closer. Also, which choirs did Regina Spektor's The Call and This is the Moment for their ballads?

It's interesting how I consistently under-rated Cedar Rapids groups as compared to how the judges rated them. After all six groups performed in finals I wrote down my predictions and I had:

GC Bloomington Jefferson (Best Vocals)
1st RU Cedar Rapids Jefferson
2nd RU Milton (Best Choreography)
3rd RU Cedar Rapids Prairie
4th RU Fort Atkinson
5th RU Eau Claire Memorial

I had everyone else in the right order (Jefferson did place higher than Prairie, and Bloomington over Milton) but just put Jefferson and Prairie too low, apparently.

Of course, anyone from Bloomington or Milton probably thinks I was right, and wishes I was judging the competition.

I'm flattered to say the least! This was the Connection's first trip to Monona, and we had a BLAST. It was a wonderfully run competition, and all the choirs were fantastic. I didn't see all the groups in finals, but after watching both Cedar Rapids groups I have zero hard feelings about the final results. CR Jefferson is the best group I've seen in two years.

Plus, our group finally broke our two year curse of dropping places in finals. Congratulations and good luck to all the groups for the rest of their competitions!

In past years the competition has had a video critique. Recently, after hiring a panel of judges, it was decided to have live clinicians, requiring two people.

That was a good idea. The video guy my senior year was worthless. He just kept saying stuff like "ooo that was snazzy" It's just so much better one-on-one because then there is actual interaction.

I decided at Linn-Mar yesterday that I would be an EXCELLENT critique judge hahaha

lol. wouldn't you realize a long time ago that you only had two scoring judges? that doesnt make sense at all, but whatever.

I was a last minute addition. There was an oversight and Mrs. Nahirniak realized that she hadn't hired enough judges. There would have only been 2 scoring judges during the day.

Congrats to all of the competing groups!

If he was one of the judges then he was a last minute addition, because he was not in the program. I wonder if they added him, or if he replaced someone.

I also had Milton winning best choreography at Viterbo as well lol
