Whoever said that Mr. Fehr paid off the judges or set everything up is messed in the head. That's all I have to say about that. I looked back through and couldn't find it, but I'm pretty sure everyone knows the post that I am referring to. Mr. Fehr runs one of the best ships in the country and to accuse him of that is foolish and unproven.
Yes, I do recall seeing a circus themed set with tutus and all and how about that tall puffy PH hair from '09? That has appeared this year too!
The circus theme was Lebanon's, and it wasn't based at all on JB's '08 show. It was actually inspired by the britney spears song.
And who had the hair? Jw, i missed a few of the groups lol. and both JB groups were excellent, by the way
Actually, all of the judges but one screwed us over. One judge had us in fourth. The others had us in a solid seventh. But yes, i do know which judge you're talking about. ;)
aww well i think u guys were amazing!!! best group of the day b4 clinton
I think that Burroughs should have won - hands down! Their show was so artistic and creative that is just made my life! They probably would have too if some of the judges were qualified.
My wife and I spent $41 for day and night performances and a program. Worth every penny.
Congratulations to all the great performers and groups.
I know at the end of the day, it's a competition and groups need to be given their ranking but as an audience member, I just want to be entertained. The entertainment level at this competition was the best I've seen in many years.
THANKS!!!!
People are silly. At the end of the day it's not about trophies or points or judges, it's about how much fun you had on and off stage. I'm sure that's how the first choir festivals started out.
Then observers probably argued over who did better, so a challenge was made: "well, we'll hire a judge to decide" one judge isn't fair, so we'll hire a panel of judges, then there should be no more argument.
There's still argument about who is the best when it doesn't matter. Show choir isn't about who's the best, it's about performing for each other. for me, the judging panel and awards just make it a little more exciting, and it gets some students to actually watch other choirs.
but If it becomes all about winning, then it shouldn't happen.
and all this talk about the content of shows isn't supposed to matter to judges. Even if there is a general effect score, they aren't judging your show, they're judging your performance. When ten groups that are at such high performance levels, it's so much more difficult to decide.
If I was judging yesterday, I'd hate to not give everyone a five foot tall trophy.
P.S. : if you have opinions about a choir that would be inappropriate to say to them if you bumped into each other in the bathroom after awards, don't say it on the internet either.
Powerhouse does catch my eye, and I love the song they picked for their closer (if anyone could tell me who the artist of it is, I would appreciate it greatly). I thought the ballad was quirky but I actually liked it. I thought they were a teeny bit sloppy in the day round, but they still executed very well and they sang well. I just personally think that the show is a little bit too "over the top" with trying to be unique. To me it sort of seems like it's thrown in my face a little bit. I loved Powerhouse's show last year, and I liked it the year before. I just personally don't like the show this year. Sorry that everybody can't see that I PREFER a group like Clinton or Center Grove over Burroughs this year. I'm not coming on here going "BURROUGHS SUCKS BECAUSE THEY'RE DIFFERENT AND THEY SHOULD GET LAST BLAH BLAH BLAH!" I'm saying that I just don't prefer their show this year because of the reasons above that I've stated
I thought Piqua was the only group who really got shafted; they absolutely deserved to be in finals.
Thank you very much we all really appreciate this comment.
*On a side note for anyone else who reads this post I really stress to you not to associate one person's opinion as my whole groups opinion (previous posts). Piqua was very disappointed but life goes on.
** On another side note...Congratulations to EVERYONE who was there watching or online watching and to all of the performers. I had the opportunity to watch almost every group, if not all groups, after the lunch break. I just wanted to say Attache and Powerhouse blew me away, they were wonderful to watch and learn from. However, they were not the only groups there. So to everyone else, your art is also appreciated. It was nice to chill and relax and just watch a bunch of great groups. Congrats and good luck to everyone in the future.

I don't know if I agree that all of the other groups need to "step it up" to match Powerhouse. I thought PH was fantastic. They're absolutely one of the best groups in the country. However, I preferred their show last year more. I'm not sure what it is exactly, and I'll need to watch some more to find out. I simply preferred more aspects of Clinton's show to Burroughs'.
While a group like Powerhouse is obviously extremely committed to their performance of their own music, I can't get past some of the choreography. Is it appropriate for their music? Of course. Is it well-executed? Of course. But a group like Attache has choreography that is just as appropriate for their music, just as well-executed (if not more so), and is just as committed to their performance of their music... with choreography that (to me) looks much more difficult and visually entertaining. I don't believe "It's time to step it up" is necessarily a phrase I would say to Clinton Attache after the performance I watched of their show last night.
True- maybe the word(s) I was looking for is just to move forward- change is good. Clinton was once on the cutting edge- I'm sure people looked at them sideways- but now they are the norm. Watching other groups- Lebenon, In Sync... it's obvious that the more theatrical style of PH will be the norm too- some day. Hopefully they will continue to change and evolve to continue to set the new norm. I apologize for that choice of words.
Actually I think that the best part of Piqua's show was the combo. You guys played so well! If anything I think the choir needed to sing out more
Thank you. With a 25 member strong combo, its difficult not to over power the singers. It's weird to hear all season, judges say that we were not strong enough and then here we were too loud. I'm guessing mics.
In the film Amadaus there is a line that says "My dear young man, don't take it too hard. Your work is ingenious. It's quality work. And there are simply too many notes, that's all. Just cut a few and it will be perfect." He complains that there are too many notes for the royal ear. That's what I hear when people are complaining that PH is just too artistic. Just too many costumes, too many transitions, too many notes for all your royal ears. It's time to stop wearing Sequin Queen, it's time to put true design in the show, it's time to step it up.

Wow, after reading all these comments about Burroughs, I feel like I was watching an entirely different show.
*This is coming from someone who was sitting front and center for every group in finals.*
Personally, I LOVED them, in both prelims, and even more in finals!
And I'm sorry, I really don't think that their show is "too artistic," I think it's perfect. From their insane lights, crazy hair, ingenious makeup, any choir DREAMS of being able to put on a show such as they did, and still dominate.
Their vocals were amazing, they completely deserved that award. They were full and powerful, and they fit the show concept perfectly, from "let me fall," to "being for the benefit of mr. kite" and "run," they were ALWAYS spot on. Their show was top to bottom brilliant.
I think people have to start having a more open mind about show choir. I mean, there's a thread on this website about how the midwest is "too unoriginal." and then when we see a group like Burroughs we're all like "well that was TOO artistic." How contradictory is that?
And as for Clinton, I thought you were unreal as well. You took classic show choir and upped it about 40000 notches. Your energy was tangible, and I've never seen kids have more fun performing a show before.
I agree with the awards and placements, and I loved every single finals performance.
And I've never seen or really followed Center Grove, but after their finals performance, I'm definitely a fan! Again, another extremely fun and entertaining show that they performed the heck out of! and your ballad was beautiful, I love phantom of the opera.
One more thing- I was SHOCKED when Piqua didn't make finals. You guys had some of the most creative choreography, amazing energy, and your band was CRAZY, and I thought you left your heart on that stage. You're still one of the best powerhouses in Ohio, don't let this get you too down.
