I am a CenterStage parent and we traveled from Albertville to Piqua, Ohio over the weekend. It was a long and tiring trip but lots of fun. Thanks to PHS for hosting a great competition! This was our first competition of the season and I was looking forward to it with great anticipation. I enjoyed every performance! One of my favorites was Solon Music in Motion. I loved everything about their show- music selection, costumes, and performance was great!
Well, I'm at school now...we got home at about 9:30am Sunday, and now that I am somewhat rested, I would like to say congrats to everyone, finalists and non-finalists...I was very proud and honored to be among the finalists and to be compared to the amazing choirs that attended!! ;)... I hope everyone had a safe ride home, and again, CONGRATS TO EVERYONE! ;)
to each competition their own, but those who have been around awhile know that i have been a staunch proponent of score normalization, rather than olympic style or ordinal scoring. you can read more about it in a previous thread here. basically, it eliminates the issue with scores not being "worth" the same with each judge or "this judge hated us".
oh, and to any contest directors out there, a score of 10 should mean "yup, it don't get any better than y'all just did it" -- why not let your adjudicators use decimals rather than whole numbers? i think it would help aid some semblance of objectivity. 8.8, 9.6 & 9.5 mean more to a population of data than 9, 10, & 9.5.
in other news, pretty cool implementation of the famed piqua "wall of fog" -- wonder how long that took to rig?
alright, im in StC Singers, and a bunch of us wanted to know how our Ninja Turtle Rap turned out?
at the beginning of the year we were gonna cut it because we were scared about it.
so how was it?
Coming from a huge Ninja Turtle fan, and speaking for numerous other fans, the Ninja Rap was awesome. Now if we wanna be all technical on vocals and precision of choreography, obviously there are improvements that need to be made, but when it comes to pure entertainment, I loved it! And the guitar hero stuff at the end was great as well. Your guitarist was outstanding. And being one of the many alums there working all day, you were the group that I thought "man, I just wish I could've seen it again just for the entertainment." Congrats on a great show.

that is true...but a 3 point difference is just not right...no judges scales are that far off
Now this is just a little bit irritating. Just coming on here to b!tch about scores is taking things a little far, especially when there has been plenty of larger disparities than that. Just this year there was an instance at a very recent competition, when a certain group was given vocals scores from a judge of all 10's...and two 5's. 5's people. Now, let's just say they were given 7's (which as you say indicates that the judge's scales is "far off") instead of the 5's, then that group would've won GC instead of 1st RU. Did any kids from that group get on here and complain? No. Because every single post from this group is extremely courteous and thankful just to be competing with such great schools. So I think we all need to calm down here, let the judges do their best, and continue to do what we love because when it comes down to it, it doesn't last forever.
Don't compare one judge's scores with another's, rather compare all the choirs scores from a single judge. That "7" might be the highest score that judge gave all day and be quite an accomplishment. The judge handing out "10" may have only given out 9s and 10s, making a 10 from him mean so much less.
just my opinion...I really feel that the judging was a little out of wack here. Im not going to mention any specific groups...but from seeing some of the judges score sheets I am led to believe this. I know judges can differ on opinions but when one judge gives a group a 10 and another gives them a 7...whether it was the 10 giver or the 7 giver...i believe the judges were either biased or had grudges to let out.
As for placings...I def think that marysville should have placed higher and dekalb not so high. beavercreek sorry that it didn't work out for you...I had you in over three of the groups that made finals. congrats to twinsburg! =)
Ok. Just so everyone knows, Findlay First Edition members aren't allowed to post on SCC. It's an old FFE rule. A friend of mine from FFE also told me there was nobody in their group named Jenn Licious, whos name belongs to the above post.
I just wanted to make sure everyone understands that the above post is not from a real Findlay First Edition member, but from an individual who is portraying a fictitious member of FFE.
Congratulations to every group yesterday. The amount of talent on that stage was amazing. Also, a big thanks goes out to Piqua for hosting an amazing competition!
Thank you for clarifying I was thinking the exact same thing
I was able to come watch the competition and I was floored! Everyone did a fantastic job and I enjoyed every bit of it I just want to congratulate everyone that participated and a big congrats to
Twinsburg. you guys have vastly improved since Marysville's competition!
I'm sure that Beavercreek and Solon were in the Top 10, but they didn't deserve to be in finals. I saw the groups and they were not as good as the 6 choirs that made it into finals. It was a VERY difficult competition. As for Marysville..... they were the biggest disappointment of the night for me. The beginning of their show was AMAZING. The ballad was excellent. If they would have walked off the stage after the ballad, they could have won the whole thing. After the ballad, the show fell apart. The vocals were bad and the choreography was NOT clean. If they can fix it and bring it up to the level of the rest of the show, they will be unstoppable, but they didn't deserve to beat twinsburg, us or dekalb. A month from now, things could be different.
Our show was not perfect by any means, but it's early in the season for all of us. We can all improve. February comps will be bigger than ever this year!

Extremely dissapointed in judging at this comp...Beavercreek and Solon didnt make finals 2 groups who i thought definitely deserved to be there. Also thought Marysville should've atleast got 1st runner up, not trying to take anything away from anyone thats just how I feel.

I think all of us did really good in the finals it was really tough we all got extremly better and from going from 4th in the day show to 6th showed that the other choirs stepped it up it was fun. THanks for having us and Piqua your show was super awsome i loved it wish everyone in ours could move like that see you around
I personally was not able to make it to Piqua but two of my friends went and i heard nothing but great remarks about all 6 finalists. I would like to congratulate Twinsburg on their Grand Championship and i would like to wish everyone good luck with the rest of their season.

Beavercreek sang beautifully. I was VERY surprised they did not make finals. Their band had some issues, but their vocals were the 4th best of the day (behind Marysville, Twinsburg, and Findlay) in my opinion. The ballad, I thought, was very pretty.
Twinsburg was incredible both in the daytime round and finals. Their choreography is absolutely stunning. They are like the energizer bunny. They just keep going and going and going. And there is so much intricacy and layers to their movements, that every time I have watched their show it still felt like I was seeing things for the first time. The improvement from when I last saw them at Marysville's competition is very commendable.
Findlay's first four numbers were very good. The beautiful opener and quirky 2nd number especially. The show loses steam at the closer. The closer was messy visually and vocally, but the strong first half makes up for it, I suppose. A well deserved Best Vocal Caption (although depending on one's tone preference I could have easily seen the caption given to Marysville as well). It is a brighter sound than Findlay has normally had. But it is still very good one. Still one of the best singing groups in the nation.
Dekalb did improve drastically from prelims to finals ... but in my opinion not enough to jump 3 places. There is still a lot of vocal cleaning up to do, and visually it isn't as effective as past Dekalb shows have been visually. The opening dresses were beautiful though, I thought. Best costumes of the day.
Marysville's show was solid. I thought they were going to place 1st or 2nd. There is a lot of room for improvement still, but I think already the show is better than last years. The vocals are more mature, and the choreography is more difficult and more visually innovative. I think this show could match the 2007 show. Actually, up until the results, I really did think that this was the best Marysville ever. But, I guess we will just have to see how another panel takes this year's show and see if they agree with me on that. I do know that this year's opener and ballad are my favorite of any Marysville opener and ballad. And I also know that out of all the songs performed in finals only one song gave me chills. And that was Marysville's ballad. It is beautiful.
Albertville was interesting. The Fosse opener was so cool. And I have seen "On the Deck of a Spanish Sailing Ship" done many a times before, but never quite how they did it. Also, the closer soloist was FIERCE. The only complaint I had was that Albertville seemed to have a really strong lower sound. I don't know if the soprano notes were cut out of the arrangements or were just inaudible, but ... I really could not hear them at all. Everything sounded like it was being sung in chest voices.
I did not see Northrop in finals.
Piqua was outstanding. Holy crap. I could not believe it. I love the Scott Alan opener and ballad. And I love the edge and attitude that Piqua has. It is truly unique. The choreography is much improved from past years. I especially liked the opener choreography. And one thing I absolutely love about Piqua is their fearlessness. Those girls are not afraid to really sing out and show off their voices. I can't wait to see how else Piqua places this year, because in my opinion they are one of the best groups I have seen .
